Inertial Forces Are Real

They are never fictitious, pseudo or imaginary

Albert Loh - 27 Jan 2023

Inertial forces are always present in an accelerating

object, regardless of the frame of reference

F Ma
1. INERTIAL FORCES ARE THE
Acceleration
REACTION OF AN OBJECT’S MASS TO
ITS ACCELERATION.

equal and opposite inertial reaction Ma reaction force in the equal and opposite

2. INERTIAL FORCES ARE DISTRIBUTED

OVER EVERY POINT ON THE OBJECT.
The magnitude and direction of the inertial

that the reaction force ∑ ma is the sum of force ma at each point is proportional to the

provides the reaction to the external force F
as required by Newton’s 3rd Law.

3. INERTIAL FORCES ARE REAL FORCES that can be measured and affect the
internal stresses, force distribution, deformation and contents in an accelerating
object. They DO NOT CHANGE OR DISAPPEAR when observed from an
inertial or other reference frame and therefore should never be considered as
ctitious or pseudo.

1 Newton’s Laws are valid for acceleration relative to an inertial reference frame 1
2 Proper Acceleration is the acceleration relative to an inertial reference frame.

Inertia Forces that originate internally do not affect
acceleration

The reason why inertia forces are often regarded as ctitious is because
INERTIA FORCES ORIGINATING WITHIN AN ACCELERATING BODY
DO NOT CAUSE ACCELERATION OF THE BODY ITSELF. Inertia forces
are a reaction to the local acceleration and not the cause of the
acceleration.

WHETHER INERTIA FORCES AFFECT ACCELERATION DEPENDS

ON WHETHER THAY ARE INTERNAL OR EXTERNAL TO THE FREE
BODY BEING CONSIDERED

When analysing an object as a free body,

F Ma ma only external forces (red) acting on the
object cause it to accelerate.
Inertial forces (green) are internal forces
F = Ma + ma ; a = F / (M + m) within the object and do not affect the
acceleration of the object.
Fig. 3 - Free body diagram FBD showing inertial
forces in green

However, if the example above is analysed as separate free bodies, the contact force f
acting between the two free bodies is considered to be an external force and therefore
does affect the acceleration of each body.

F Ma f f ma

F = Ma + f ; a = (F - f) / M f = ma; a = f / m

forces in green.
