Periods and commas are placed inside close-quotation marks. Question marks and excla-
mation points go outside the quotation mark unless they are part of the quote itself.

QUESTIONS ON STANDARD ENGUSH USAGE

19. Noun-Verb Agreement

Sentence subjects and verbs must agree in number. A singular subject must be paired with a
singular verb, and a plural subject with a plural verb. That’s simple enough to remember but
in some circumstances not so easy to apply.

1. Wh en intervening words obscure the relationship between the subject and verb, as in:

Delivery (singular subject) of today’ 5 newspapers and magazines have been (plural
verb) delayed.

The prepositional phrase oftoday's nelν'spapers and magazines blurs the relationship between
subject and verb. The plural noun magazines can mislead the writer into using a plural verb.
With a singular subject and verb properly matched, the sentence reads:

De /i very of today’ 5 newspapers and magazines has been delayed.

Or with matched plural subject and verb:

Deliveries of today's newspapers and magazines have been delayed.
