Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, our daily lives have been hard. For
example, the government has banned face-to-face classes at schools and
universities. However, in today’s modern world, schools and other institutions have
found ways to continue to provide education to their students. By using only the
Internet, a computer, and a phone, students have access to a wide range of learning
resources and materials provided by the schools that can help the learners improve
their knowledge and learning experience. From online classrooms and virtual
teachings to textbooks, pre-recorded presentations, and other multimedia materials,
these platforms provide students with opportunities to learn and grow while also
allowing them to continue and pursue their education without risking their health
and safety outside their homes because of COVID. In this summary for the IT Era,
we will take a look at the various learning platforms that emerged in response to
the pandemic, as well as their current status after the pandemic and the return of
face-to-face classes. To accomplish this, we interviewed some students of
Bagumbayan National High School in Taguig City about the current status of their
learning platforms to get a better understanding of their experiences and situations.
The students at Bagumbayan National High School use different learning platforms
depending on their grade level. Student 1 and 3 use Google Classroom, while
Student 2 uses Ms. Teams. According to the participants, it is easy to navigate the
learning platform that they are using; however, Ms. Teams, a learning platform, is
quite confusing at first for Student 2. because it has a variety of action bars. With
its frequent use, she learns to navigate it easily. She said that this online learning
platform helps her to manage tasks and assignments that were given to her as it
provides a calendar and a due date for assignments. It keeps track of their
activities.
Student 1 has no idea how to use the platform that they are currently using at
first. With an active use of their platform, she learns to navigate it, which leads her
to be knowledgeable about utilizing it. So, currently, she finds it easy to use
Google Classroom.
The students are not proficient in utilizing common computer hardware. Student 3
has a wide variety of knowledge about it, but she is not an expert. Nevertheless, all
of the participants are skilled and knowledgeable in using the fundamental
functions of word-processing programs to create, format, and edit documents for
class assignments. According to the participants, it is required to become skilled in
using it to pass their assignments. Additionally, only Student 2 is skilled in using
spreadsheet programs. Only Student 3 is knowledgeable about using spreadsheet
programs. But she isn't very good at it because they only use it in Statistics class.
According to the participants, the remote learning system is quite difficult. Student
3 stated that she does not like online learning, but when she fully adjusted to the
situation, she started to like distance learning, but students 2 and 3 did not adjust
easily. They struggle with their internet connection, learning the topic, and
adjusting to their surroundings.
Only student 2 can easily participate in an online class when learning online. She is
the one who stated that she struggles with poor internet connection and a noisy
environment. But she can easily participate in a modular approach. Students 2 and
3 can participate in online classes effectively. And according to them, it is not easy
to learn effectively through modular learning. They are not able to exchange ideas
with their classmates, and they need to learn on their own.
In conclusion, each of the three pupils has a unique approach to adopt in various
professions. Everyone can understand the situation we're in, which is why some
people don't put forth much effort in certain tasks. We do not need to judge others
based on their abilities in this self-opinionated society; we have our own
uniqueness to demonstrate and thrive in.
➤ Transcript of Interview:
The interview was conducted via messenger due to the fact that the students'
availability was limited due to the fact that Christmas vacation had already begun
and they still had to submit their final projects.
STUDENT 1
We are currently using Google Classroom and Google Meet for our online classes. because it is the most
effective platform that we can utilize in our online classes for most of us.
Yes, for me, it is very useful and conducive to utilizing in an online class setting. because it lessens the
effort and time I should take to complete all of my schoolwork. Also, I can just message my teachers if I
have any concerns about a certain topic.
The learning platform sharpens my time management skills, and it also makes me aware of all the things
that I need to do. On the contrary, it also happens that using this learning platform has disadvantages for us
students. For example, students can do whatever they like when they are currently in class and cheat, for
example, while doing their schoolwork or exams.
4. Were you given any devices or gadgets that you could utilize for this platform?
No, our school didn't provide any gadgets for us. But instead, they cascaded modules for those students
who do not have gadgets to use for online classes.
5. Since online remote learning and modular learning utilize common hardware, are you "proficient" in
utilizing common computer hardware such as a power supply, motherboard, storage devices, removable
media, printers, etc?
6. Are you skilled and knowledgeable in utilizing functions of any graphic software that could be used for
academic purposes such as activities or assignments, as online remote learning and modular learning
required output?
I'm not particularly skilled at using the functions of graphic software, but I do know a little about it.
7. Are you skilled and knowledgeable in using the fundamental functions of word-processing programs to
create, format, and edit documents for class assignments?
I can say yes, because I am obliged to learn how to use it because it's needed in our online class, where we
do all of our paperwork in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.
8. Are you skilled and knowledgeable in using spreadsheet programs such as Microsoft Excel to handle data
and analyze it for class assignments?
I'm not very familiar with Excel, but I'm willing to learn if given the opportunity.
9. Are you knowledgeable about utilizing your institution’s learning platform? Are you familiar with all the
functions and their uses? Were you able to utilize the platform as support for the acquisition of knowledge
in certain subjects?
To be honest, I had no idea how to use those apps at first, but as time passed and I practiced, I became more
proficient.I was able to learn all its proper usage and functions. Furthermore, I find it simple to use because
all I have to do is submit all of my paperwork in soft copy to my course subjects, as opposed to in-person
classes where I have to make an effort to write my schoolwork.
10. Since most of the school shifted to emergency remote learning, were you able to adjust easily? What are
your struggles?
To be honest, it takes time to adjust. I have experienced struggles, like if I have any questions about our
lesson, I still have to ask my teacher about it. And when doing group work, we have to use online platforms
like Google Meet to exchange our ideas. So it is a very big hassle, especially for my classmates who didn't
have a stable connection.
11. Were you able to participate in the online class or modular approach easily?
I am able to participate the most in online classes.
12. Were you able to share your ideas regarding the lesson with your classmates in modular learning? Were you
able to ask your teachers clarifying questions?
In my perspective, modular learning isn't effective because I have to learn all the things on my own without
an instructor to guide me and discuss the lessons. Furthermore, because it is modular learning, me and my
classmates didn't have a chance to exchange ideas about what we had learned.
