Difference level means a formally designated level of difference between a base and a candidate aircraft for
the evaluation of pilot training, checking, or currency.
Difference Requirement (DR) table (EASA terminology) or Difference table (FAA terminology) means
a description of differences regarding the level of training, checking, or currency between a base and a
candidate aircraft and their impact on pilot knowledge, flight characteristics or procedures. For sake of
simplification, when only the term of “DR table” is used in this manual, it should be understood as meaning
“Difference table” in the FAA terminology.
Flight characteristics mean handling characteristics or performance characteristics perceivable by a pilot.
Flight characteristics relate to the natural aerodynamic response of an aircraft, particularly as affected by
changes in configuration or flight path parameters.
Handling characteristics mean the manner in which the aircraft responds with respect to rate and
magnitude of pilot initiated control inputs to the primary flight control surfaces.
Knowledge, Skills, Attitude (or Abilities) – KSA is understood as being a combination of characteristics
defining the competency required to perform a task.
● Knowledge is considered as the ability to understand something
● Skill is considered as the ability to act physically on something
● Attitude is considered as the ability to feel something
A Maneuver is a planned and intentional movement of an aircraft.
A Procedure is a series of chronological actions performed by the flight crew to accomplish a specific task.
Proficiency check (EASA terminology) means the demonstration of skill to revalidate or renew ratings,
and including such oral examination as may be required.
Related aircraft (FAA terminology) means any two or more aircraft of the same make that have been
demonstrated to have commonality.
Skill test means the demonstration of skill for a license or rating issue, including such oral examination as
may be required.
Training Areas of Special Emphasis (TASE) means specific knowledge and skills required for the safe
operation of an aircraft, use of equipment, application of procedures or performance of operations.
Variant (EASA terminology) means an aircraft within the same pilot type rating that has difference to the
base aircraft requiring difference or familiarisation training under FCL.710. The variants for a given type
rating are specified in the Operational Suitability Data – Flight Crew” document.

3. DR Tables
3.1. Purpose of DR Tables
The DR table identifies the differences pertinent to the flight crew in terms of general aircraft characteristics,
systems and maneuvers/procedures. The DR table also identifies the impact of the differences on flight
characteristics and change of procedures and proposes appropriate difference levels for training, checking
and currency.
In EASA regulatory framework, DR tables are part of the Operational Suitability Data (OSD) Flight Crew
(OSD-FC) of a given aircraft Type Certificate. DR tables applicable to a given aircraft are listed in the
applicable OSD Flight Crew report that is referenced in the aircraft Type Certificate Data Sheet. DR tables
are approved either by EASA or by Airbus under privilege granted by EASA. DR tables provided by Airbus
are used by the operators and training organization in accordance with Commission Regulations Air
Operations and Aircrew.
In the FAA regulatory framework, Operator Difference Requirements (ODR) tables are operator’s data
required for flight crew training and operation. Airbus provides Difference tables to the FAA in order to
support Flight Standardization Board (FSB) operational evaluations. Difference tables provided by Airbus are
evaluated and accepted by the FAA AEG. They may serve as guidance data for the operators that are
responsible for developing ODR tables customized to their fleet. ODR tables are approved by the operator’s
FAA Principal Operation Inspector (POI) and they are the basis for an operator’s approved pilot training
program.

3.2. Description of DR Tables

3.2.1. Differences
The DR table identifies the differences pertinent to the flight crew between a base aircraft and a candidate
aircraft.
The differences are categorized by:
● Aircraft general/design: This part describes the major differences related to the aircraft general
presentation and operational limitations associated with the aircraft operations (dimensions, weights,
maximum operating speeds, envelopes, etc.). Limitations regarding aircraft systems are listed in the
DR system part of the table.

● Aircraft systems: This part lists the differences related to systems. It is organized according to the
ATA 100 specification and then identifies for each ATA chapter or sub-chapter the applicable
differences in term of:
○ System design and architecture
○ Normal operations
○ Controls and indications
○ Limitations.

● Aircraft maneuvers/procedures: This part identifies the differences regarding the aircraft
maneuvers and procedures. It is organized as follow:
○ Normal maneuvers / procedures arranged per flight phase
○ Abnormal and emergency maneuvers / procedures arranged per flight phase
○ Abnormal and emergency procedures arranged per ATA chapters.

3.2.2. Effect of the differences on flight characteristics and/or procedures

For each difference listed in the DR table, an analysis is performed to determine its effect on both flight
characteristics and procedures.

3.2.2.1. Effect on flight characteristics

Flight characteristics address handling qualities and performance of a given maneuver.
The “FLT CHAR” (Flight Characteristics) column is set to “YES” for a given maneuver when:
● The candidate aircraft is perceived by the flight crew as having major differences in handling
qualities during the maneuver as compared to the base aircraft and
● This difference requires additional flying skills for the flight crew to safely accomplish the maneuver
(additional flying skills to be acquired by training on FFS or aircraft).
When the alteration of flight characteristics only affects the performance of the aircraft (and the handling
qualities perceived by the flight crew are not changed), “YES (P)” is inserted in the “FLT CHAR” column.
If the difference has no impact on the handling qualities perceivable by the flight crew and on performance,
the “FLT CHAR” (Flight Characteristics) column is set to “NO”.
Note: The FLT CHAR is never set to “YES” in DR tables between variants or DR tables for aircraft
modification.

3.2.2.2. Effect on procedures

When the normal, abnormal or emergency procedure associated with the listed difference are impacted in
such a way that additional knowledge, skills or attitude are needed for the crew to accomplish the new
procedure on the candidate aircraft, then the “PROC CHG” (Procedure Change) is set to “YES”.
In any other cases, the “PROC CHG” (Procedure Change) is set to “NO”.

3.2.3. Difference levels

Difference levels are used to identify the extent of difference between a base and a candidate aircraft with
reference to the elements described in the DR table.
These levels are proportionate to the differences between a base and a candidate aircraft.
A range of five difference levels in order of increasing requirements, identified as “A” through “E”, are each
specified for training, checking, and currency. The meaning of the letters (“A” through “E”) classifying each
item is different whether it is used for training, checking or currency.

3.2.3.1. Training difference levels

Unless explicitly indicated, the difference training levels apply to both initial and recurrent training.

● The level A training is applicable to difference items that can be adequately addressed through
self-instruction. The level A items do not require any specific training media and an existing
descriptive documentation is sufficient.

● The level B training is applicable to difference items considered as “complex”. The term “complex”
refers to systems or procedures made of many combined elements that are not self-explanatory at
first glance. The level B items require to be trained with aided-instruction. In this context, aided
instruction is defined either as instructor assistance, an animated training media used in self-paced
learning, video or any other aided instruction means.

● The level C training is applicable to difference items considered as “complex” and having specific
difference in Human-Machine Interface and Function. The level C items require to be trained on an
interactive training device with functional fidelity environment. Functional fidelity refers to the degree
to which a simulated task environment behaves in a way similar to the real task environment.

● The level D training is applicable to difference items that require to be trained with a full crew and
with guided-instruction. In this context, guided instruction is defined by the use of an interactive
training device with functional and physical fidelity environment and with instructor guidance.

Note: The level E training is applicable to difference items that require to be trained with a full crew, with
guided-instruction and a high-fidelity environment. Level E training is not applicable to an DR table between
variants or a DR table for aircraft modification.

3.2.3.2. Checking difference levels

Under EASA regulation, there is no skill test required after the familiarization or difference training between
variants or for an aircraft modification. There is also no proficiency check required for a variant or an aircraft
modification. Therefore, the checking column is always assigned as level A i.e. no checking.

Under FAA regulation, the requirement for a checking after difference training between variations is specified
in the FSB report.

3.2.3.3. Currency difference levels and frequency

The currency refers to the experience necessary within a specified period (referred to as “frequency”) to
ensure that the competences required for safe operation are continuously maintained over time.

The currency displayed in the DR table applies to the listed difference items between the base and the
candidate aircraft. It provides
● A currency difference level as defined below
● A frequency for Currency Difference level B and above.

● A level A currency means that the training item does not require any currency i.e. the item does not
need to be regularly practiced in operation or be regularly self-reviewed by the pilot to maintain a
safe aircraft operation.

● A level B currency means that when the knowledge part of the training item needs to be practiced
regularly in operation or be regularly self-reviewed by the pilot to maintain a safe aircraft operation.

● A level C currency means that the skills part (as well as the knowledge part if applicable) of the
training item needs to be practiced regularly in operation or in a training device with HMI and
functional fidelity environment to maintain a safe aircraft operation.

● A level D currency means that the skill and attitude parts (as well as the knowledge part if applicable)
of the training item need to be practiced as a crew regularly in operation or in a training device with
HMI, functional and physical fidelity environment to maintain a safe aircraft operation.

Note: A level E currency means that when the skill and attitude parts (as well as the knowledge part if
applicable) of the training item need to be practiced regularly in operation or in a high-fidelity training device.
Level E currency is not applicable to a DR table between variants or a DR table for aircraft modification.

3.3. Use of DR Tables by operators and/or training organisations

3.3.1. Under EASA regulations
The DR tables between variants within one aircraft type provide the training requirements that shall be taken
into account for the establishment of differences or familiarisation training as per FLC.710. The list of variants
within a single licence endorsement is defined in the applicable Operational Suitability Data – Flight Crew
document. There is no specific checking requirement (skill test or proficiency check) for a particular variant.
Under FCL.740, a Licence Proficiency Check on any Variant allows renewal of the validity of the type rating.
Accordingly, there is also no currency requirement between variants.

The DR table for aircraft modification is provided for aircraft modification (or combination of aircraft
modifications) identified by Airbus as requiring additional knowledge, skills or attitude in order to safely
operate the aircraft equipped with this modification over time. An aircraft modification can be the installation
of new equipment or function, the introduction of a new procedure or the change of an existing procedure as
well as the implementation of new operational characteristics. As such, the Airbus DR table for modification
supports the establishment of differences or familiarisation training required by ORO.FC.125 “when changing
equipment or changing procedures requiring additional knowledge on types or variants currently operated”.
The currency requirements defined in the DR tables refers to the experience necessary within a specified
period to ensure that the competences required for safe operation are continuously maintained over time.
Currency requirements for normal operations may be achieved by adequate crew scheduling or recurrent
training. Currency requirements for abnormal operations need to be taken into account during the recurrent
training.

Note: The same aircraft modification may be installed on several aircraft types. If applicable, credits for
training and currency between aircraft types for a given modification are specified in the section “Additional
Operational Considerations” of the Operational Suitability Data – Flight Crew” document.

3.3.2. Under FAA regulations

The DR tables between variants within one aircraft type and the DR table for aircraft modification support the
establishment of the training programs for use under the applicable CFR.

Use of the DR tables under other regulations may be adapted by comparison of these regulations with EASA
and/or FAA regulations.

4. Training Areas of Special Emphasis (TASE)

4.1. Identification of TASE for variants and aircraft modification
In order to prevent knowledge misunderstanding or skill errors specific to a given variant or aircraft
modification, Training Areas of Special Emphasis (TASE) may be specified as mandatory items to be
integrated in training (type-rating training, difference training or familiarization training as applicable).

4.2. Use of TASE by operators and/or training organisations

The TASE for the initial type-design of a given aircraft are provided in the “Operational Suitability Data –
Flight Crew” document. The TASE for the initial type-design shall be included in type rating training in
accordance with the applicable regulation (e.g. EASA FCL.725).
This document provides the TASE for variants and aircraft modifications developed after the initial type
certification of the aircraft.
It is the operator or training organisation responsibility to identify the configuration of the aircraft to be trained
and to consider the applicable TASE.
The TASE identified for variants and aircraft modifications shall be specially emphasized during differences
or familiarisation training in accordance with FCL.710(a) and/or ORO.FC.145(b).

Use of the TASE under other regulations may be adapted by comparison of these regulations with EASA
and/or FAA regulations.
