Dungeon Alchemist gives you many options when deciding on a new map to build. You can build
maps according to paper size if you plan to print them out for in person games, OR you can go
Digital if you're on a VTT (or if you don't want to be bounded by a certain size.) If you choose a print
size, you won't be able to go beyond the borders of that size. If you choose Digital, the only limit on
the size your map can be is the power of your computer. "How big is the recommended size?" That's
not a question I can answer here. Everybody has different machines. Everybody's experience will be
different. My computer can handle about 50x50 and then I just don't feel like waiting anymore. It
works great at the terrain features, though. Seems smooth and my computer is at least 10 years old.
Other folks have trouble with 30x30, and their specs are better than mine. So, my best advice is to
experiment. See what your machine's limits are. I have also had good luck starting small and then
expanding. And THAT's what this post is for. So here we go…
This is a NEW map. 10x10 on Dark Parchment. I turned off the AI. I chose DIGITAL.
But I want other rooms and I've used all the grid space. You simply select again...outside the
current map you've got.
Ignore the fact that you don't have a visible grid. DA doesn't care. You can still select squares and
create rooms.
Notice how DA will show you the grid spaces when you add the rooms.
What if I want to add to terrain? <--good question. Same idea. Select everything as before, but this
time, choose Grassland or Forest instead of Dark Parchment:
There are a lot of new options here. You'll have to experiment with these, but for this I chose Flat,
No Water and Steppe for the vegetation. DA gave me this:
So, I mess around with the terrain tools a bit and I make some mountains and I've got a lake and I
start to draw in a little river...but I've discovered I didn't give myself enough real estate to draw it
out as far as I wanted it to go.
Here's what you do. Simply select tiles outside the map again. I selected Farmstead, AI OFF and
you get this.
WHAT? I don't what that, DAGG! What's the matter with you? This looks lame! MY MAP IS
RUINED! <--are you done? If you've got some more tantrum in you, let me know. When you're done,
I'll continue. ... ... ...
Okay. Now you simply REMOVE that room! (You need to select the tiles, but this time they're
RED...OOOO...scary.)
Click the execute button and DA will kill off that room, providing you with the real estate that room
was using.
You'll notice that it also fills in that real estate with the vegetation type that matches what you
chose in the first place.
This begs the question: Can I make my maps smaller? Um...nope. Not currently.
Anyway, I hope this has been helpful.
