READING
11 Read the article and choose the correct options.
Are we getting more creative – or do we just copy what came before?
In the area of artistic creation, it’s tempting to say that we haven’t really improved on the work done by the old
masters in the 17th and 18th centuries. However, this would be oversimplifying things and also ignoring some
of the major artistic styles of more recent centuries. To the argument that there is nothing new in art, I would
say that all creative processes have to have an origin somewhere, and we all learn from those who came before
us. To produce a truly original creation, without any debt to our predecessors, is perhaps asking too much.
However, I think we are getting more creative in our approach to art, using different materials, compositions
and subject matter.
I also believe that our creativity is being tested in new areas. To give you an example of what I mean, television
has, for many years, been secondary to cinema. Whole generations of us have put up with poor programmes,
weak storylines and writers who just seemed to run out of imagination. All the creative talent went into
the movies, while TV just suffered from being a poor relation filled with formula-driven crime shows
and throwaway programmes which passed as comedy. TV was fast food, while the cinema was a gourmet meal.
Anyone who has watched a recent quality box set would probably argue that the tables have turned – a single
hour-long episode of a modern TV series can often be better made and more enjoyable than a two-hour film
which has had millions spent on it.
In music too, there’s no shortage of people who can dream up new ideas and explore different musical
possibilities. Although some modern music has similarities with what was done in the past, a good test would
be to imagine today’s music being played to someone from 50 years ago. Regardless of whether or not they
liked it, they would probably have to admit that it was unique. Some musicians would claim that there is
a limited number of ways in which musical notes can be arranged, so it’s inevitable that some modern songs
will resemble songs from the past. I would go along with this because, if you listen to any music, you can
usually hear influences. In this sense, music and painting have a lot in common.
However, if we want to see modern creativity in action, and if you still think that we, as a species, just copy
things from the past, you need to look no further than the world of video games. Now here, if we could go back
in time, we would see a staggering difference. The video games of 50 years ago were so incredibly basic that
if people from back then could see what we have today, they would be speechless with admiration.
With modern graphics looking so much like the genuine article, we have achieved many of the things that were
once just a distant dream. Yet it seems that the creativity of the games has a surprising and perhaps

unintended consequence. Research shows that children who play video games go on to become more creative
individuals.
More than anything, technology is the one thing that our generation has made the most rapid progress
with. Yes, we do still have people who think outside the box and come up with amazing new ideas. People in all
areas have flashes of inspiration that bring about revolutionary new ideas, but it is technology that is the main
driver of change. Technology has transformed our lives and is also behind changes in art, music, TV, video
games and many other modern phenomena where we express our creativity. And perhaps it is the people who
are behind today’s technology that are the most creative of all.
1 By mentioning paintings done in the 17th and 18th centuries, the writer is
A referring to the point where he thinks modern art began.
B giving an example of a period he thought produced the best artists.
C indicating a time when many people believe artistic progress stopped.
D promoting a period in art that is often ignored.
2 The writer uses food to compare television and cinema to point out that
A television programmes are hastily made and do not endure.
B cinematic films are more expensive both to produce and to watch.
C television appeals to a wider range of viewers.
D many cinematic films are becoming too intellectual.
3 The writer believes that contemporary music
A requires more imaginative musicians to make it more creative.
B has developed in a wider number of ways than painting.
C would not be comprehensible to past musicians.
D is unavoidably influenced by music of the past.
4 Which sentence is the best summary of the final paragraph?
A It is only in the field of technology where people are truly inspired today.
B Creative people in technology have helped many other people to be creative.
C Thanks to people being creative in different areas, technology has been able to advance rapidly.
D Without technology, we would have seen greater progress in fields such as art, TV and music.
