Introduction

The English course on Information and Communication Industry (EICI) is developed

in the communicative approach, i.e. including all the four language skills; Reading,
Listening, Writing and Speaking, aimed at familiarizing the students of the Electrical
and Electronic Engineering Faculty with their possible working environment in the
future. Translating skills are also enclosed in the form of English – Vietnamese
passages and Vietnamese – English sentences. Apart from providing the
frequentlyused ESP vocabulary, this course also strengthens common ESP
grammatical elements, such as the Passive Voice or the Relative Clause. Besides, the
students are exposed to the functional language when introducing products, services;
discussing or persuading partners in writing or speaking form. After the course, the
students are capable of understanding the materials on their specialism in English,
engaging in business discussions and corresponding or presenting their specific
topics in English.
The course duration of three credits (60 class contacts) is allotted as follows:
• The book is composed of 6 units, each lasts 9 class contacts.
• A progress check takes place after Unit 3, the content of which is decided by
the class teacher. Another check, the Trial Test particularly sticks to the End-
of-term Test’s format and is provided by the Section at the end of the course.
Both checks last 3 class contacts each and their scores are taken into the
Progress Mark. The assessment scheme abides by the Formula selected by the
English Section:
ĐHP = 3*ĐQT + 7*ĐTHP
In which,
- ĐQT, the Progress Mark is composed of 30% for the student’s full
attendance, 30% for his or her Progress Check and Trial Test scores and
40% for all the homework and/or classwork he or she does during the
course. The total percentages are converted into Mark 10 by the 10-mark
scale and equals Mark 3a. This score is divided by the class lecturer.
- ĐTHP, the End-of-term Test Mark is the single actual mark awarded to
the student when he or she takes the End-of-term Test some time after the
course is over, which is based on the 10-mark scale and equals Mark 7b.
- ĐHP, the Course Mark is added up by Mark 3 a plus Mark 7b. The student
is supposed to redo the course if his or her overall score is less than Mark
5.
Note. a refers to Progress Mark or ĐQT, whereas b means End-of-term Test
Mark or ĐTHP.
3
Example: A student gets his Progress Mark of 8 and End-of-term Test Mark of 6.5,
then his overall score is calculated as below:
ĐHP = 3*8 + 7*6.5 = 6.95 ~ 7.0
Mark 7.0 is the student’s final score.
 The End-of-term Test is broken into 6 parts, the details of which are illustrated in
pages 102-103, as guided and adopted by the English Section. The test content
covers all what is given in the course book, including Grammar and Vocabulary
acquisition in addition to all the four language skills.
The EICI Group would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere thanks to
the Section of Information and Communication Industry, UTC for their profound
support and valuable assistance given during the compilation and adaptation of this
material, and to the English Section, its leaders and staff for their constructive
comments, without which the book could not have been accomplished.

F. TRANSLATION
Task 1. Translate the following passage into Vietnamese.
The rise of mobile payments technology truly began in 2014 when Apple Pay hit the
market. At the time, it was the only major mobile wallet out there. But in the last two
years, mobile wallets have flooded the market with offerings such as Samsung Pay,
Chase Pay, Android Pay, Microsoft Wallet, Walmart Pay, and Kohl's Pay. Each of
these offers unique benefits to the user and encourages customers to form shopping
habits around them. And so far, they seem to be succeeding. BI Intelligence,
Business Insider's premium research service, finds that mobile payment volume will
reach $75 billion this year. That figure should swell to $503 billion by 2020 thanks to
advancements in mobile payments technology.
A small percentage of people have used mobile payments. In late 2013, just 6% of
US adults said they had made a payment in a store by scanning or tapping their
smartphone at a payment terminal. That percentage will go up to 8% this year.

HOMEWORK
1. Translate the following passage into English.
When the first mobile phones were introduced, their only function was to make and
receive calls, and they were so bulky that it was impossible to carry them in a pocket.
Later, mobile phones belonging to the Global System for Mobile Communications
(GSM) network became capable of sending and receiving text messages. As these
devices evolved, they became smaller and more features were added, such as
multimedia messaging service (MMS), which allowed users to send and receive
images. Most of these MMS-capable devices were also equipped with cameras,
which allowed users to capture photos, add captions, and send them to friends and
relatives who also had MMS-capable phones. A mobile phone with advanced
features similar to a computer is called a smartphone, while a regular mobile phone is
known as a feature phone.
