1.Asurface emits thermal radiation with the intensity varying with angle 0 to the normal given by:
I=lo a 2, where a = cos 0 and lo is a constant. Here, Io corresponds to the black body intensity at
2300 K.
(a) What is the emitted flux from the surface in W/m??
(b) What will be the emitted flux in W/m²from a black body at 2300 K?
[6+2]
2. The emissivity of anodized aluminum is approximated by three bands as given below:
Bandl: s -0.56, 0<<4 um
Band 2: E -0.96,4<k 10.8 um
Band 3: a -0.78, 1>10.8um
What is the equivalent gray emissivity of the surface at 300 K?
[6]
3. Acircular disk of diameter I mat 600 K(surface I in sketch below) is kept directly opposite to
a disk of diameter 0.5 mand 400 K(surface 2 in sketch below). The distance between the two disks
is equal to 0.3 m. Both the disks have an emissivity of 0.6. The view factor F1z is equal to 0.138.
The room in which the two disks are placed is very large and is at a temperature of 300 K. The
room background at 300 Kcan be considered as black surface (surface 3in sketch below).

Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur
Mid Semester Examination-Part 1
Max Marks - 45 Time: 1 hour
Note: The Part 2will be given to you afterI hour. You can submit both the parts at the same time.
LAlangeslab of 0.lmthickness having thermalconductivity equal to 10 W/m-°C generates heat at
constant volumetric heat generation rate of 10 W/m². The slab is covered on both sides by 0.025 m
thick slabs having thermal conductivity of 0.5 W/m-°C. The two exposed surfaces are maintained
at 85 °C by external cooling arrangement.
(a) What is the temperature at the surface of the heat generating slab?
(b) What is the maximum temperature in the heat generating slab?
[5+5]
2.A dozen approximately spherical apples, 10 cm in diameter are taken from a 30 °C environment
and laid out on a rack in a refrigerator at 5 °C. The apples have approximately the same physical
properties as water and average heat transfer coefficient (h) is approximately 6 W/m-K due to
natural convection.
(a) What will be the temperature of the center of the apples after 1hour?
(b) How long will it take to bring the center temperature of the apple to 10 °C?
(c) How much heat willthe refrigerator have to carry away to get the center of the apple to
10°C?
Use:
K=0.603 W/m-K
p= 997.6 kg/m
C=4180 J/kg-K.

3. In areas where the air temperature remains below 0°C for prolonged periods of time, the
freezing of water in underground pipes is a major concern. Fortunately, the soil remains relatively
warm during those periods,and it takes weeks for the subfreezing temperatures to reach the water
mains in the ground. Thus, the soil effectively serves as an insulation to protect the water from the
freezing atmospheric temperatures in winter. The ground at a particular location is covered with
snowpack at - 8°C for a continuous period of 60 days, and the average soil properties at that
location are k=0.35 W/m °C and a =0.15 x 10°m/s. Assuming an initial uniform temperature of
8°C for the ground, determine the minimum burial depth to prevent the water pipes from freezing.

4. Acopper sheet of dimension 50 x100 x 2 mm is exposed on both sides to an ambient fluid at
25 °C with an average heat transfer coefficient of 7 W/m²-°C. The initial temperature of the plate is
100°C. How long does it take for the temperature of the plate to reach 50 °C?
The properties of copper are:
Density: 8950 kg/m'
Specific heat: 385 J/kg-°C
Thermal conductivity: 386 W/m-°C.
