ACTIVITY IN MODULE 5
1. What art form can you most relate to and appreciate? It may be an architecture,
sculpture, painting, music, literature, film, dance, performance/theater art and living
tradition.
I can relate most on painting because I love visual arts, painting in particular. And I really admire
those painters because of their passion and talent in creating an artwork. Painting allows me to
have a deeper understanding of emotions; it increases my self-awareness, and also allows me
to be open to new ideas and experiences.
I really admire Leonardo da Vinci an Italian polymath of the High Renaissance who is widely
considered one of the greatest painters of all time. I like his style of painting because Leonardo
painted on a variety of surfaces. He sometimes used wet plaster or sometimes painted on dry
stone wall. He usually used hand-made oil paints, from ground pigments. Leonardo would first
create a detailed underpainting in a neutral gray or brown, then apply his colors in layer after
layer of transparent glazes on top—using a limited range of tones. Some of the underpainting
would show through the layers, subtly helping to create form. Creating colors by applying glazes
also gives a painting a depth you cannot get by applying a color mixed on a palette. Some of his
famous paintings that I really love are: Mona Lisa, The Last Supper, Vitruvian Man, Virgin of the
Rocks, Adoration of the Magi, and many more.
3. Is there a particular work of art created by him or her that you relate to and appreciate?
What is it and why?
As a Fipino and a Roman Catholic, I really appreciate his painting entitled " The Last Supper"
because it has been part of every dinning table and has been part of our every meal. This
painting contains the origin of the Eucharist, the sharing of bread and wine as representations
of Jesus's body and blood. And finally, Jesus bids farewell to the apostles. The theme of The Last
Supper was a traditional one for refectories and portrayed Jesus gathering his disciples to wash
their feet (symbolizing their equality in the eyes of the Lord) and announcing that one of them
would soon betray him.
This painting also taught me that everyone is equal in the eyes of our God despite of our
differences in life. And a reminder that not everyone we've trust will do good things to us,
assured that someone will betray and will do bad things and stab us in our back.
4. Based on what you wrote, make an assumption about what the painting means.
Based on what I have written, there are three major possible assumptions for the meaning in
the depictions of the Last Supper: the first is the dramatic and dynamic depiction of Jesus's
announcement of his betrayal. The second is the moment of the institution of the tradition of
the Eucharist. The depictions here are generally solemn and mystical. The third major theme is
the farewell of Jesus to his disciples, in which Judas Iscariot is no longer present, having left the
supper. The depictions here are generally melancholy, as Jesus prepares his disciples for his
departure.
Every artist plays a different and necessary part in contributing to the overall health,
development, and well-being of our society. In this 21st century, the purpose of an artist is to
express the beauty of the modern world around us. Artists shows the real value of an art piece
comes from its ability to express truth in a way that influences people for the better.
2. How relevant still are the awards National Artists and GAMABA, not only to the art
world, but also to the Filipino society as a whole?
National Artists and GAMABA awards are still important today for every Filipino artist because
The GAMABA or the National Living Treasures Award is the highest Presidential recognition
given to individuals who excel in various indigenous arts, customs, and traditional practices.
National Artist is an honorary title issued by our country as a highest recognition of artists for
their significant contributions to the cultural heritage of the nation.
Through these awards or recognition, it reminds us, as Filipinos that art has done us a great
service, and we should recognize this by supporting our local and traditional artists and
spearheading initiatives to safeguard, preserve, and protect our cultural heritage.”
3. Analyze and critic state-sponsored recognition for artist and cultural workers. What do
you think are some of the consideration that must be addressed with regards to these?
As we can see, only the artists who are recognized by state-sponsored recognition or national
recognition for artists have lots of benefits interms of financial support and needs. Somehow,
other artists who are not recognized by those do not received any help or support from the
government.
The arts are critical to a vital, thriving, creative, innovative culture and economy. As such, every
artists recognized or not should be supported in any every way possible.
1. Identify and select one artist local or foreign and identify with any form of art:
architecture, sculpture, paintings, music, literature, film, dance, performance/theatre,
living traditions.
A. Research on him or her and select five aspects of his life (events, ideas, works, and
awards/citation) that you think have contribution not only local or foreign art scene but also to
human history.
Events: Billy Abueva, as he was fondly called, was born in Tagbilaran, Bohol, to Teodoro
Lloren Abueva, a Bohol congressman and Purificacion Gonzalez Veloso, president of the
Women's Auxiliary Service.
Napoleon "Billy" Veloso Abueva (January 26, 1930 – February 16, 2018) was known as the
"Father of Modern Philippine Sculpture" Through Proclamation No. 1539, He was proclaimed
National Artist for Sculpture in 1976 when he was 46, making him the youngest recipient of the
award to date.
Ideas: Napoleon Abueva was reecognized as the “Father of Modern Philippine Sculpture”,
Abueva helped shape the local sculpture scene to what it is now. He used almost all kinds of
materials for his sculptures such as hard wood, adobe, metal, stainless steel, cement, marble,
bronze, iron, alabaster, coral and brass. He was the first Filipino artist to mount a one-man
exhibit at the Philippine Center in New York in 1980.

Abueva’s bronze sculpture entitled Magdangal was inaugurated. Situated in front of the
College of Arts and Letters building, this work stands on top of a high concrete pedestal as the
centerpiece of a mini-park surrounded by trees and concave benches. At the foot of the
pedestal, are the words of poet and National Artist for Literature Virgilio Almario which inspired
the making of the sculpture.
This reinforced concrete work represents the nine muses of art: architecture, dance, film,
literature, music, painting, photography, sculpture, and theater. The nude muses, spread
around atop a ring-like pedestal are rendered in various stances. Despite strong formal traces
of neo-classical influences, their relaxed poses and generous gestures temper the usual severity
that the tradition is known for.
SANDUGO
The Bohol Blood Compact sculpture was made by the National Artist, Napoleon Abueva, a
Boholano himself. It is placed on an open and raised dais portraying five (5) life-sized images of
men gathered around a table with Legazpi and Sikatuna supposedly making a toast.
THE FREDESVINDA
It was included in the 1st ASEAN Sculpture symposium at Fort Canning Hill, Singapore, and has
been there ever since. The Fredesvinda was nicknamed 'The Ship of ASEAN' as it's structure
represent the skeleton of a ship. It also symbolises ASEAN unity and cooperation.
THREE DANCERS
Eternal Gardens Memorial Park's symbol – an image of Christ with his arms outstreched – is
called "Transfiguration" and was designed and executed by Abueva. The first one that Abueva
made can be found at Baesa, Caloocan City. He later made the ones at Eternal Gardens
Cabanatuan and Eternal Gardens Santa Rosa.
THE SUNBURST
Abueva's "The Sunburst", the focal point at The Peninsula Manila lobby.

2. What are the relevance of combined arts and hybrid art in the 21st century?
Combined arts is where different artforms interact and create something new and exciting across
outdoor arts, carnival, festivals, spectacle, interdisciplinary work, live art and participatory and
social art practice. On the other hand, hybrid arts is a contemporary art movement in which
artists work with frontier areas of science and emerging technologies. Artists work with fields
Maybe its relevance is important because during the era of the twenty-first century the combined
arts and hybrid were discovered and used and as of now a new generation.
