CONTEXT CLUES
One technique to improve your reading comprehension and reading pace is
using context clues. Context clues are words, phrases, and sentences that
surround an unfamiliar word that can help recognize the meaning of an
unknown word because the text gives you information about it.

TYPES OF CONTEXT
1. SYNONYMS are used when the text as words or phrases that are similar in
meaning to the unknown word. Though their meanings are similar, they are not
exactly the same because a word may have different associations with it.
Synonym clues may be signaled by the following words:
e.g. 1. The narrator in the poem was euphoric at his son's victory, for
he
cried out triumphantly when the boy came home.
2. The suspect often obfuscated during the interrogation. His
explanations were confusing and complicated.
3. Laarni envisaged the witch in her mind. She imagined its
sharp
claws and jaws, and then shivered in fright.

2. ANTONYMS is a word that reveals the opposite meaning in relation to the

unknown word. When you see words like though, unlike, but, despite, instead, in
contrast, however, even though, on the contrary and conversely, these usually
precede antonyms because these are used to contrasting ideas
e.g. 1. James relentlessly pursued his dreams unlike his friends who
gave up easily when difficulties arose.
2. They tag him insolent because he answers back, so impolite
with the elders and ungrateful to his parents. But her sister is
totally different because she is so respectful and gentle.
3. The boy is so precocious and on the contrary, his sister is so
immature and late bloomer.
3. EXAMPLES are specific details in a text that are used to clarify the meaning
of the word.
e.g. 1. The father of the boy was ecstatic when he found out that his
son won the championship. He laughed out loud, cheering, and
hugging his son.
2. He is having his anxiety attacks. Once his name was called to
do his recital, he begins to sweat, tremble, and breathe rapidly.
3. Celestial bodies, including sun, moon, and stars, have
fascinated
man through the centuries.
4. EXPLANATION may be given as clues to describe an unknown term. When
phrase like “because” or “that is” follow a word, these may be explanations.
e.g. 1. The announcements and reminders should be put in a very
conspicuous area so that all could easily see and read it, thus
be informed accordingly.
2. Police officers often must interrogate witnesses, that is, the
officers must ask their witnesses important questions and try to
get truthful answers.
3. I called him a nuisance because he kept pestering me of his
unnecessary questions every now and then, especially when I
was
too busy.
5. DEFINITIONS may follow an unfamiliar word. Terms like “is,” “means,” “is
defined as,” and “refers to” are used with definitions. The actual definition is
provided or a straightforward definition is given.
e.g. 1. The doctor’s writing was utterly illegible; no one could read
those
scribbles.
2. She heard the cry of the banshee, a spirit that cries loudly to
warn
people that someone is going to die.
3. Haberdashery, which is a store that sells men’s clothing, is
becoming common today.
6. SITUATION in which a word is used can also be helpful in determining the
meaning of that word. The meaning of a word may change depending on its
context, or how and where it is used.
e.g. 1. I love cookies with raisins and chopped dates
(edible fruit of a palm)
2. Set up a date with my lawyer.
(an appointment to meet at a specified time)
3. I asked her out on a date.
(a social engagement between two romantically involved
persons)
4. Her best album to date is really selling.
