Abstract
Homemade air cooler is one of the modern and simple type of air
cooler. It is simple in construction and works on simple principle.

It mainly consists of two Buckets,a Fan, PVC pipes. Ice water

Thermo coal sheets and etc. In this homemade air cooler ;whenever
supply given to fan it starts rotating then fan sucks air from atmosphere
into buckets through inlet valve of the bucket with some pressure and
temperature.

Then heat exchange from air to water. Then cool air comes out
through outlet valves of the bucket with some pressure. Then cooling
effect is produced. The cooling effect is measured with the help of
temperature indicator.

It is easy in construction and works with simple principle, it is easy

for maintenance and transport. It works with inverter continuously. It is
low cost and power consumption is less. It is especially used for small
babies in summer season.

Introduction

1. Introduction of Air cooler

A Home Made Air Cooler (also swamp cooler, desert cooler and wet
air cooler) is a device that cools air through the evaporation of water.
Evaporative cooling differs from typical air conditioning systems which
use vapor-compression or absorption refrigeration cycles. Evaporative
cooling works by employing water's large enthalpy of vaporization. The
temperature of dry air can be dropped significantly through the phase
transition of liquid water to water vapor (evaporation), which can cool air
using much less energy than refrigeration. In extremely dry climates,
evaporative cooling of air has the added benefit of conditioning the air
with more moisture for the comfort of building occupants.

Air washers and wet cooling towers use the same principles as Air
coolers but are designed for purposes other than directly cooling the air
inside a building. For example, an evaporative cooler may be designed to
cool the coils of a large air conditioning or refrigeration system to increase
its efficiency.

2. Introduction of AC Machine

An electric motor is an electrical machine that converts electrical energy

into mechanical energy. Most electric motors operate through the
interaction between the motor's magnetic field and electric current in a
wire winding to generate force in the form of torque applied on the motor's
shaft. An electric generator is mechanically identical to an electric motor,

5| Pa g e
but operates in reverse, converting mechanical energy into electrical
energy.

Electric motors can be powered by direct current (DC) sources, such as

from batteries or rectifiers, or by alternating current (AC) sources, such as
a power grid, inverters or electrical generators.

figure.2.1 :- Capacitor start capacitor run AC Machine

Electric motors may be classified by considerations such as power source

type, construction, application and type of motion output. They can be
brushed or brushless, single- phase, two-phase, or three-phase, axial or
radial flux, and may be air-cooled or liquid-cooled.

Standardized motors provide power for industrial use. The largest are
used for ship propulsion, pipeline compression and pumped-storage
applications, with output exceeding 100 megawatts.

Applications include industrial fans, blowers and pumps, machine tools,

household appliances, power tools, vehicles, and disk drives. Small
motors may be found in electric watches. In certain applications, such as
in regenerative braking with traction motors, electric motors can be used

6| Pa g e
in reverse as generators to recover energy that might otherwise be lost as
heat and friction.

Electric motors produce linear or rotary force (torque) intended to propel

some external mechanism. They are generally designed for continuous
rotation, or for linear movement over a significant distance compared to
its size. Solenoids also convert electrical power to mechanical motion, but
over only a limited distance.

Working of air cooler

Evaporative cooling is an entirely natural method of cooling, using only air

and water - no artificial refrigerants. Hot air is drawn into the cooler and
passes through water-moistened pads. Some of the water evaporates,
absorbing the heat as it does so, and cools the air. A fan then blows this
beautifully cooled air throughout the room and forces hot air out through
open windows and doors. Because evaporative cooling is natural and the
unit's don require an enclosed space to work, they are an ideal solution for
cooling open areas such as undercover patios and workshops.Homemade
air coolers operate on the principle of evaporative cooling. The process
involves:

figure. 3.1:- Air cooler

Water from the reservoir is pumped onto the cooling pads.

The fan draws in warm air from the environment through the wet
cooling pads.

8| Pa g e
As the air passes through the wet pads, it is cooled through the
evaporation of water.
The cooled air is then circulated into the room, reducing the overall
temperature.

Construction and Components

Homemade air coolers are relatively easy to build with readily available
materials. The basic components include:

Homemade air coolers are typically constructed using the following

components:

A container or box
A water pump
A water reservoir
A fan
Cooling pads or media
PVC pipes and fittings

a. Container or Box: This serves as the body of the air cooler and holds the
other components.

b. Water Reservoir: A tank or tray to hold water, usually placed at the

bottom of the container.

c. Water Pump: Used to circulate water from the reservoir to the cooling
pads.

d. Cooling Pads: Typically made of cellulose or similar material, these

pads absorb water and provide surface area for evaporation.

e. Fan: An axial or centrifugal fan to draw air through the wet cooling pads
and into the room.

f. PVC pipes and fittings: - PVC pipes used to make the outer structure of
air cooler.

Application

1. Air coolers are appliances used to lower the temperature of indoor

spaces by evaporating water and blowing cooled air into the room.
They have various applications, including:

2. Home Cooling: Air coolers are commonly used in homes to provide

relief from hot weather, especially in regions with dry climates. They are
more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly compared to air
conditioners.

3. Commercial Spaces: Air coolers are employed in small shops,

restaurants, and offices to maintain a comfortable environment for
customers and employees.

4. Industrial Cooling: In industrial settings, air coolers are used to cool

machinery and equipment, as well as to create a more tolerable
working environment for employees.

5. Agricultural Cooling: Farmers use air coolers to keep livestock and

poultry cool during hot weather, as well as to maintain optimal
conditions in greenhouses.

11 | P a g e
6. Event Cooling: Air coolers are often used for outdoor events, such as
weddings, festivals, and sporting events, to keep attendees
comfortable.

7. Server Rooms: They are employed to regulate the temperature in server

rooms and data centers to prevent overheating of computer equipment.

8. Construction Sites: Air coolers are used at construction sites to

improve working conditions for laborers during hot weather.

9. Healthcare Facilities: Hospitals and clinics use air coolers to maintain a

comfortable environment for patients and healthcare professionals.

10. Educational Institutions: Schools and universities may use air

coolers in classrooms and common areas to ensure a conducive
learning environment.

11. Warehouses: Air coolers help control the temperature and humidity
in warehouses, which is crucial for storing certain goods and materials.

12. It's important to note that air coolers are most effective in dry or arid
climates, where they can provide significant cooling benefits. In humid
conditions, their effectiveness may be limited.

Disadvantages of Air Cooler

1. Limited cooling capacity – Air coolers have a limited cooling

capacity, and may not be able to cool large rooms or spaces effectively.

2. Water evaporation – Air coolers require a constant supply of water

to work effectively, which can be a problem in areas with water scarcity.

3. Temperature dependency – Air coolers work best in dry, hot

climates, and may not be as effective in humid or wet climates.

4. Noise – Air coolers can be quite noisy, which can be disruptive,

especially when trying to sleep or work.

5. Space requirement – Air coolers take up more space than window-

6. mounted air conditioners and are less easily installed in tight spaces
.
7. Limited cooling capacity: Homemade coolers are best suited for small
to medium-sized rooms.

8. Humidity dependency: They work effectively in dry climates but may

not be as efficient in high humidity areas.

9. Regular refilling: The water reservoir needs regular refilling, which can
be inconvenient.
