VASA 32 big end bearings

in H-type connecting rod
In some VASA 32 engines, a small cavitation damage could be found in the
end of the oil groove. This cavitation was normally found on V-engines on the
B-bank and on in-line engines running counter-clockwise. Normally this dam-
age was more of a cosmetic nature, but in some cases it had developed and
damaged the running layer. To avoid cavitation the oil groove from the upper
bearing half was removed.

By using a longer oil groove in the lower

bearing half approximately the same oil

flow into the piston could be obtained. lug pins
Also, the mating surfaces of the bearings
showed a tendency of deformation. In or-
der to reduce the surface pressure the
guiding lug was replaced with guiding
pins.
These new anti-cavitation bearings have
now been in use from the beginning of
November 1995. The bearings concerned are shown in the table below.

The field experience from these bearings have so far been good.
Recent work shop test runs have, however, showed some small movement of
the bearings during the first running hours. This movement was more severe
when using 2V11B350/351 bearings, but the same kind of movement was ex-
perienced also with 2V11B381/382 bearings.

The test performed so far showed that the reason for this small movement is
length reduction of the bearing shell during the assembly and during the first
running hours. A small movement after assembly is normal. However, if the
movement of the bearing is severe, the guiding pins can be bent and as a con-
sequence start to press the bearing shell against the crankpin. This situation
can lead to a bearing failure.

Actions to be taken
If the bearing has not moved during the first running hours at full load, there is
no reason to believe that the bearing would move later. However, for safety rea-
sons the following actions must be taken:
1. MIBA 2V11B350/351 bearings, with guiding pins, are not allowed to be used.
2. All MIBA bearings which have been installed must be replaced.
3. BHW 2V11B381/382 bearings, with guiding pins, are not allowed to assemble.

4. BHW 2V11B381/382 bearings

which are already in use can be
used until the next overhaul,
provided that the movement of
the bearing is less than 2 mm
and the bearings have been in
use more than 100 h.
Less than 2mm
5. If this type of bearing is removed
it should not be reused.

6. If you have 2V11B381/382 bearings in your stock, return them to Wärtsilä

Diesel.

Replacing connecting rod bearings

The table below contains the new anti-cavitation bearings which are replac-
ing the existing bearings.

The use of the old type GL 87 bearings is unlimited. The bearings which can
be used are 1V11B313/314 and 2V11B187/188.

Engines concerned
The first anti-cavitation bearings have been installed in engine number 6375.
More widely the use of these bearings started at the beginning of November
1995, starting from engine number 6874.
A specific list of the engine numbers concerned is available from Technical
Service. For more information contact Vesa Nurminen, tel. +358-61-3272 749
