The attachment period in the IT department at Pembe Flour Mills Ltd was largely successful in
achieving the student's main objectives. Specific successes include:
 Attaining hands-on experience in network administration and optimization.
 Gaining insights into server operations, backups, and system upgrades.

FAILURES

1. Some of the days the organization experienced system failures that made it impossible to
work due to a faulty UPS during power blackouts, risking the functional lifespan of the
systems.
2. Weighbridge server failure which made it impossible to undertake the normal operations
of the firm thus weighing was done manually.

18 | P a g e
SOLUTIONS

1. First the team worked on getting a new UPS to replace the faulty one, in order to avoid
loses that would be brought by the systems.
2. The firm was in the process of buying an up-to date server to be used by the weighbridge

 I was able to meet and work with potential employers and other staff members thus
socializing which really helped in improving my communication skills.
 Exposure to demands and challenges of the work place like giving feedback in the
appropriate time, reporting early enough at work, and relating with different categories of
people as well as performing the daily activities.
 The attachment helped me gain more confidence since I had to do different activities
which at times had to be addressed to my superiors.
 New knowledge and practical experience was acquired in the field of communication and
interpersonal skills among others that would help in my future employment fields.

3.2. Challenges encountered by the student during the attachment period

Despite the overall success, certain challenges were encountered during the attachment period:
 Limited exposure to certain advanced technologies due to project constraints.
 Time constraints affecting the depth of involvement in long-term projects.
 Occasional communication gaps leading to a delay in obtaining project-specific
information.
 One of the challenges I encountered during the attachment period was the large volume
of work that the IT department handles. This meant that I had to work quickly and
efficiently to complete my assigned tasks. However, I was able to overcome these
challenges with the help of my supervisor and the other members of the finance
department.
 Due to the fact that I was new in the organization, it took me a while to get used and cope
with the environment. It was challenging since I wasn’t used to the culture and society.
The first days of the attachment , I did not have much to do and had to be vigilant and sit,
and the day would end with not much done. This was kinda a challenge for the first week
because I would be idle for a while before getting assigned something to work on.
However it was solved by my allocated supervisor who provided a schedule of duties for
me.
19 | P a g e
 It was hard to understand the systems used in the organization, how to access their
servers remotely, how to browse them and the main function of each system. It was kinda
hard and confusing for me at first to differentiate each system’s IP addresses, but it was
made easier by my IT team for the training of each system that they provided to me.

3.3. How the challenges were overcome /solved

Efforts were made to address and overcome the encountered challenges:

 Proactively seeking additional learning opportunities outside of the assigned projects to
enhance exposure to advanced technologies.
 Efficient time management and prioritization to maximize involvement in key project
tasks.
 Improving communication channels by scheduling regular update meetings and utilizing
collaboration tools.
 I overcame the challenge of the large volume of work by prioritizing my tasks and
working efficiently. I also learned to delegate tasks to other members of the team when
necessary.

3.4. Recommendations as to how the attachment exercise can be improved by the

University

Based on the attachment experience, the following recommendations are made for enhancing the
overall effectiveness of future attachment exercises:
 Facilitate more comprehensive orientations to ensure students are well-prepared for the
specific industry and technological environment they will be working in.
 Establish a structured mentorship program to provide students with continuous guidance
and support throughout the attachment period.

20 | P a g e
 Encourage regular feedback sessions between students and industry supervisors to
address challenges promptly and enhance the overall learning experience.
 Promote flexibility in project assignments, allowing students to delve deeper into areas of
specific interest.
 The university should provide more support to students during the attachment
period. This could include helping students to find attachments, and providing guidance
on how to complete the attachment report.
 The University should provide students with more information about the attachment
exercise before they start their attachments. This information should include information
about the types of tasks that students will be expected to perform, the challenges that they
may encounter, and how to overcome those challenges.

 The University should also provide students with more support during their attachments.
This support could include providing students with access to training resources,
mentoring them, and helping them to resolve any problems they may encounter.

3.5. CONCLUSION

environment. The IT department emerged as a dynamic and integral component of the
organization, presenting numerous learning opportunities and challenges.

limited exposure to advanced technologies and time constraints were encountered. Proactive
measures, including seeking additional learning opportunities and improved time management,
were implemented to overcome these challenges, enhancing the overall experience.

Recommendations for Improvement: To enhance future attachment experiences,
recommendations have been proposed. These include comprehensive orientation sessions,
structured mentorship programs, regular feedback mechanisms, and increased flexibility in
project assignments. These suggestions aim to optimize the learning curve and ensure a more
