OBJECTIVES
Respiratory System
LESSON OBJECTIVES
Identify the different structures of the respiratory
and its function.

Appreciate the importance of taking good care of

the respiratory system.

Explain how the respiratory system work to provide

oxygen to our body.
RESPIRATORY SYSTEM?
Responsible for “breathing” which
is a process of delivering oxygen to
the body and taking away Carbon
dioxide.
WHAT ARE ITS FUNCTIONS?
Delivers oxygen to the lungs.

Excretes Carbon dioxide

out of the body.
OXYGEN = IN
CARBON DIOXIDE = OUT
LET’S INHALE
EXHALE!
OXYGEN IS IMPORTANT TO US

RESPIRATORY SYSTEM?
Respiratory system is the system that
helps you breathe in and out, so oxygen
can be pumped through your body and
carbon dioxide can be removed from the
blood stream.
THREE PROCESSES OF RESPIRATION
1. Breathing
Exchange of air in the atmosphere to the lungs.
Inhale and Exhale

2. Diffusion
transfer of O2 and CO2
Across the Respiratory System

3. Transport of Gases
Oxygen -> Cells
Carbon Dioxide -> Lungs for release

FIRST STATION OF RESPIRATION
1. Nostrils
The openings of the nose
Inside is a pair of passages called nasal cavities

2. nasal Cavity
Sinuses and Cilia
Separated by Septum

3. Transport of Gases
Oxygen -> Cells
Carbon Dioxide -> Lungs for release

Larynx Trachea

SECOND STATION OF RESPIRATION
1. Pharynx or windpipe (Throat)
Gathers air from the nose.
Passes the air to the Trachea

2. Larynx
Allow Speech AKA Voice box
Blocks food and liquid to enter the lungs.

3. Trachea
Connects Throat to the Bronchi
Splits up into two bronchi tubes.

THIRD STATION OF RESPIRATION
1. Bronchi tubes
Split up smaller inside the lungs -> Bronchioles
Air inside is warm, clean and moist.

2. Bronchioles
Smaller Bronchi
End with small air sacs (called alveoli)

3. Diaphragm
The primary muscle used in respiration.
Inhale - Contracts : Exhale Relax

THIRD STATION OF RESPIRATION
1. Alveoli
Tiny air sacs - grape-like structure
Surrounded by many tiny blood vessels called
capillaries.

2. Capillaries
Delivers oxygen in bloodstream
Thin walls that allows oxygen to pass through.
