SECTION: BEED II-A SUBJECT: STS

TOPIC: Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO)

I. INTRODUCTION

Let us define GMO, or genetically modified organisms. The first is genetically or genes.
Genes are formed of DNA, which is a set of instructions for cells on how to grow and
develop. The following modification is a minor or partial change. The organism comes
last. People believe that GMOs are only found in crops, however because it is an
organism, it may pertain to all living things, including bacteria and fungi.

GMO, genetically engineered living thing, organism whose DNA has been altered in a
laboratory to encourage the production of desired physiological characteristics or the
creation of desired biological goods. Breeding has long been used in traditional
livestock manufacturing, agriculture for crops, and even pet breeding to choose
individuals of a species to produce offspring with desirable features. Recombinant
genetic technologies, on the other hand, are used in genetic modification to generate
living things with genes that have been exactly altered at the level of the molecular,
typically by the addition of genes from different kinds of living things that code to feed
traits that would be difficult to obtain through traditional selective breeding.

GMOs created by genetic engineering are becoming more and more common in society
and are used in environmental management, research, agriculture, and health. The
creation of GMOs is still a very controversial topic in many parts of the world, despite
the fact that GMOs have greatly advanced human civilization.

II. PROS and CONS

Pros
- Genetically modified (GM) crops have been shown to be safe via study and use,
and they may potentially improve the safety of popular meals. By the GMO all the
crops and other agriculture tested before it releases to people for the safety of
the people who receive the crops.
- GMO’s price of the food is lower but with a high nutrients content and to helping
people who has no money and hunger.
- Growing GMO crops improves the environment by reducing pesticide usage,
water waste, and carbon emissions.
Cons
- Plant genetic modification may result in changes to the food supply that introduce
toxins or provoke allergic responses. Because of the test and laboratory that
been created to some plants, some of the chemicals affect to the plant.

- Certain GM crops pollute the environment by increasing the usage of hazardous

herbicides and insecticides. The equipment that used is not disposed properly,

thus can affect to environment and for us people.

III. REFLECTION

Actually, I just now found out about GMO, I just heard that but now I know the meaning
and purpose of GM. Based on research, GMOs do a lot of things, they don't just test
things. Higher technologies are used to better examine an organism and what it
changes. Testing is not only in agriculture; it can also be done in medicine and others.
He tests organisms to experiment what they can do to develop something new or
produce new benefits or alternatives for people to help people.

GMO is a big help especially to our farmers for their crops. Because there will be tests
to find out the alternative ways to remedy their problems with their crops and agricultural
problems and any other problems. MOs are both good for each other and some are not.
And one of them is the waste that is used or that has been used, but we must be
responsible for the things we use because it has a greater impact on people.
