challenges. Prior to independence in 1965, Singapore had been entirely dependent on
Malaysia for a supply of freshwater. Since then, however, the city-state has set upon a

The reservoir attracts year-round water recreation, contributing to an entirely new wave
of downtown lifestyle options. The constant water level is attractive to enthusiasts of

new residential and commercial venues. The large green roof provides an open, landscaped
space that can be used for picnics, concerts, and movie screenings. The waterfront land, now
unaffected by the tide and associated mud flats, is more attractive for development purposes.
