Your College Experience

essay should include a thesis that establishes for the reader the topics to be discussed. Use

clear paragraph formatting to discuss your experiences interacting with helpful people and

services at the college. Be sure to include evidence of your experiences in the document or

by adding images into the assignments folder.

Adaptation
According to the Cambridge dictionary, adaptation is defined as the process in which a living

thing changes slightly overtime to be able to continue to exist in a particular environment, or

a change. College experience is all about adapting. I am a new species finding my way into a

new environment trying to survive. I am an international student so it is a must that I find my

way to undo my norms and get familiar with the norms here. I will further explore these

different adaptations by discussing academic expectations, cultural differences, and the

support services on campus.

The academic transition from one country to another is not talked about enough. Canadian

and Jamaican education systems are different in many ways; however, they teach the same

material needed. One of the main challenges I faced was in my Communications class. The

teaching of English Language is different all around though there are some similarities, it is

very different as well. I overcame some of those barriers by putting more work into practice

and I see where that worked as on my first examination, I scored very high, and I never knew

I could do it. I am very grateful that most of the materials I was exposed to so the transition is

not as hard as it could have been. I plan to keep working on my academics and to achieve my

diploma.

In addition to academic issues comes the cultural adaption. I quickly realized that the social

norms in Jamaica are different than that of Canada, so I had to observe and listen to

understand how to keep up in conversations – not saying I was left out – and learn certain

slangs to ensure I understand what is being said. I learned how to communicate, and that

helped me to meet some very nice persons. These experiences helped to broaden my

knowledge on cultural ques and helped to boost my understanding and an appreciation for

this different culture.

Lastly, one thing that helped to steer me in the right directions of college were all the services

offered on campus. Two of the services that I have used, and which help are Student

Academic Learning Services (SALS) and GOOD2TALK. I use SALS for the subject areas

that I need extra practice in; I do not use it for a tutor because I feel I can handle the work

after I go over the practice tests. SALS helps me to prepare for my tests and I am so grateful

there are resources like this available whenever I need it. Next, GOOD2TALK is a therapy

hotline per say, and I am so happy that I found it. I use this to just simply talk about my day

to someone and I love that there is always a medium where I can express myself without

judgement and they are very encouraging as well. Using this helps me to stay grounded if I

am too stressed out with school and I am so happy I have access to it.

In conclusion, I have adapted, I am still adapting, and it has helped me to go through this

college experience despite the challenges that arose, whether academically or socially, but I

feel like I can take on the rest of the year and come out successful.

GOOD2TALK Conversation & SALS helped me to earn a mark to receive funding.
