One December night, a postman named E. Holboell was working late in Copenhagen Post Office,
sorting out great pile of Christmas mail. As he moved around among his mailbags, he happened to see
two little beggars, a ragged little girl and boy outside the window.
Thinking of the two children compassionately, he went back to the stacks of letters and parcels.
Suddenly he had an idea. He thought how if every letter or parcel carried an extra stamp, and the money
from thousands of such stamps went to help unfortunate children. What a blessing it would be! Being
a postman, he realized that it would not cost anyone very much.
He expressed his idea to other people in the post office. Then they agreed to launch the campaign
to help unlucky children. They designed and printed the seals. Then they promoted the campaign by
explaining it to the public, who would buy the seals. So the seals went on sale the following year and
the campaign was even more successful than the postman had hoped. The Danes bought four million
of the stickers. At that time, when drives for funds were almost unheard of, this was a triumph.
With funds from the first two Christmas Seal campaigns, they started building two hospitals for
treatment of tubercular children. It was the beginning of the movement to get ordinary citizens to take
part in fighting that infectious disease, one which, at that time, was the leading cause of mortality.
I paddled for about five miles and then I was tired. I stopped on Jackson’s island, hid the canoe
behind some tress and went to sleep.
I woke up when I heard a boom. It came from somewhere up the river. Then another boom came
loader.
I saw the white smoke. They were shooting a big gun from a steamboat into the water because
they wanted to find my dead body. They wanted come up to the top of water. I hid in the tall grass when
the steamboat came near the island. I could see Tom Sawyer, Tom’s Aunt Polly, the Widow Douglas,
Judge Thatcher, even Pap was there. Everybody was talking about me. They all thought I was dead.
They shot a big gun again. BOOM! That one was really loaded. It made my ear ring, but I didn’t move
from the tall grass. After a while, the boat went away.
On the fourth day, when I was looking around, I stepped on a fire. It was still smoking. I didn’t
wait to see who made it. I just run. I ran all the way back to my canoe. I thought I heard somebody, so
I climbed on a tree and looked around. There wasn’t anybody there. That night I went very quietly back
to the fire. When I got there, I saw a man sleeping near it. He had a coat over his head. Then, suddenly
he started to move and he took the coat off his face. It was Jim!
“Jim”, I said quietly while tapping his shoulder. Jim turned around and said surprisingly, “It is
you, huckleberry finn!” I was very glad to see Jim. Jim and I said and talked. It was good to talk to
somebody. I don’t so lonely.
Undead, Unwed, and I also wish I could say unread! Okay so here I think I have finally sunk to
the bottom of the barrel to try to catch up and complete my challenge. I do have a bit of a thing for
vampire novels! And that said I bought three different first in the series, to see if it would help me catch
up and bring me back to target.
Seriously, this was one of the trashiest novels I have ever read! It was OK and fun, but I feel like
a complete fraud and fake adding this to the list of books I’ve read this year! But I did nevertheless read
it! So it’s going to be added.
Maybe one day when I’ve forgotten how bad this book was and just how trashy, I’ll read a few
more in the series! But seriously guys I wouldn’t recommend it! The writer didn’t recommend the
readers read it.
