GENEL 3: PHILIPPINE POPULAR CULTURE

Module 1: INTRODUCTION TO PHILIPPINE


POPULAR CULTURE
CULTURE- refers to the values, beliefs, behavior, and material objects that together form a
people’s way of life (baliao,2011). Culture includes what we think, how we act, and what we own.
It is both a bridge to our past and a guide to the future. All people have culture, for it is the learned
social heritage that people accumulate through time and pass on from generation to generation.
Moreover, it provides people with a blueprint for how to lead their lives. It is from their culture
that people learn what is good or bad, what is right or wrong, what they should or should not do,
and even what they desire and what they dislike (e.g. beliefs, rituals,rights, performances, dance,
music, symbols, art forms, language, food, clothing, etc.). -Is derived from the latin word cultus
which means "care"-a care and attention provided to a human person as he grows into a mature
person. (example: Bayanihan). -Are groups of people who share a common set of values and
beliefs.
POPULAR- regarded with favor, approval, or affection by people in general (e.g. liked, enjoyed,
or supported by many people).
POPULAR CULTURE- The set of habits, beliefs, and objects that express a social system’s most
commonly held meaning is known as popular culture. It encompasses, among other things, media items,
amusement and leisure, fashion and trends, and linguistic conventions. (Kidd, 2021).-(e.g. Tiktok,music or
songs, art, literature, fashion, dance, film, cyber culture, television program or advertisement or TV
episodes, and radio that are consumed by the majority of a society’s population).
Examples of culture:
China hotpot, foot binding/lotus feet
Thailand greeting, neck ring (Tayan women)
Indonesia extended family, Dany tribe cutting of finger for every death of their family
member, Toraja tribe exhuming (dead people are not buried)
Muslim 5 pillars
 Shahada there’s no other God
 Salat praying 5 times a day
 Zakat alms giving
 Saum Ramadan
 Hajj pilgrimage Mecca -self-flaggeration
Endo cannibalism – Yanomami tribe.
PHILIPPINE CULTURE
- The Philippine Culture is a blend of
Malayo-Polynesian culture with
influence from Chinese, Indians,
Arabs, and Other Asian Cultures as
manifested in various customs and
traditions of the Filipinos.
KAPWA (OTHERS) - refer to a people as an extension of themselves. It shows
on how they give importance to their connection with other people and being part
of the family.
-Filipinos are lovers of arts (Folk songs, Cultural Dances, rituals, festivals, intricate architecture
of churches, and ancestral houses)

Videoke- favorite pastime and get together activity.


Adobo, lechon and pancit- Popular Filipino Dishes. Food characterized being salty,
sour, sweet, and spicy from our Hispanic and Malay influences.

Religion in Filipino Culture.


 Celebrate Longest Christmas season.
 Catholic devotion to Sto. Nino, Blessed Virgin etc.

Family Oriented Filipinos


 “Po and Opo”
 Extended Family members- elderly aunts, uncles and married children.
 Children taking on their ageing parents.
 Celebrate all occasions- Birthdays, wedding, funerals etc.

Tagalog- Bayanihan Spirits


Bicolanos- Religious and conservative in nature
Warays- Brave Warriors “ Basta ang waray, hindi uurong sa away”
Ilonggos- Hospitable
Mindanao- Muslim region in the country.

Ilocos Norte
o Pamulinawen Festival- (February 10) in honor of St. William, the celebration features
floral and street dance parade.
o Guling-guling- (a day before ash Wednesday) the residents of Paoy dress in their Ilocano
traditional costume adorned with antique jewelries, dance and sing around the town while
being given the sign of the cross using pounded rice instead of gray ash.
o Talip Festival – (May 19-20) commemorates the ancient peace pact that has brought peace
among ethnic tribes in the province of Ilocos Norte.
o Ani Festival- (March 28-31) a thanksgiving celebration for the bountiful harvest of rice in
the town of Dingras.
Ilocos Sur
o Longganisa Festival – (January 22) Showcase the longganisa delicacy of Vigan; highlight
of the celebration is the street dancing competation.
o Tobacco Festival – (March 28-31) showcase the major industry of Candon city- tobacco-
in line with the founding anniversary of its cityhood.
o Viva Vigan Festival of the Arts- (1st week of May) showcase the rich history, heritage,
and cultural treasure of the city of Vigan; it has become biggest cultural event in the region.
La Union
o Buybuy Festival- (February 9-11) showcase the major produce of Burgos, La Union, the
buybuy or tiger grass.
o International Long Board Cup- (January 25-27) an international surfing event for both
amatuers and professionals organized by the La Union Surfing Association.
o Dagupan Bangus Festival- (April 16-May 4) showcases the major product of Dagupan,
the milkfish or Bangus; Features street dancing, trade fairs, fluvial parade, and others.
o Binongey Festival- (April 17) showcases the traditional taste of rice cake cooked in
bamboo using diect firing.
o Mango-Bamboo Festival- (April 20-27) aimed to promote San Carlos City as a major
trading center of Bamboo based products and producer of carabao mangoes.

E. Major Cultural groups


Three (3) Distinct Group.
 Ilocanos - Ilocos Sur, Ilocos Norte, La Union and Certain parts of Pangasinan
 Pangasinenses - Pangasinan
 Igorot -Tinggaguans ( live in secluded mountains of Ilocos Sur)
Due to limited agricultural potentials in Ilocos , Ilocanos are known to be thrifty, Self-sufficient,
and enduring thet cause;
Outmigration, wherein Ilocanos can be found in all over the Philippines.
F. Major Industries
Agriculture based crop production.
o Produced best Buri mats and production of Bolos.
o Produced Mikfish (Bangus)
o Processing fish paste (Bagoong)
o Rice, tabacco, Chicken, goats, and Carabaos
G. Languages/ Dialects Spoken
Ilokano, English and Tagalog- Spoken and understood within the region.
Pangasinense, Pangalatok, Bolinao, and Tagalog- Widely spoken in Pangasinan

Travel Trivia:
Ilocos Norte’s Location on the Northwest corner of Luzon makes it ideal and suitable for wind power
generation. The 150MW Burgos wind farm in Ilocos Norte is the biggest wind farm in the Philippines and
the first wind project nominated for the Philippine Government feed-in-Tariffs (FIT) incentive schemes.
