OGL 481 Pro-Seminar I:

PCA-Choosing an Organization Worksheet

Worksheet Objectives:
1. Identify an organization and situation you want to study over the remainder of the course.
2. Describe the organization and the situation

Complete the following making sure to support your ideas and cite from the textbook and other
course materials per APA guidelines. After the peer review, you have a chance to update this and
format for your Electronic Portfolio due in Module 6.

1) Name and describe your organization.

The Boeing Company is the United States of America’s largest manufacturer of

aerospace items. They supply commercial aircraft and military aircrafts to multiple
airliners around the world and militaries as well. They are one of two major aerospace
manufacters in the world alongside Airbus in France. The Boeing Company is
headquarted in Arlington Virginia with major manufacutirng hubs in Seattle Washington
and Charleston South Carolina. The Boeing Company has been in the spotlight as of late
for major safety and quality issues related to their commercial aircrafts.

2) Describe your role in the organization (it can be an internal or external role).

My role in this organization is a Business Analyst on the 777 Program. I am pair up with
a Senior Manager in the our production system to pull metrics, craft power points, and
give our Senior Leadership the information they need to make informed business
decisions. Although, this incident did not happen in my program, our enterprise is seeing
the ramafications of the incident from sweeping production changes to production
stoppages to work on quality and safety.

3) Describe the situation, including information you think the will help the reader
understand the most important elements of the situation. (This will require
selectivity: part of the art of case writing is separating the essential facts from the
mass of information that might be included).

On January 5th, 2024 a Alaska Airlines flight enroute from Portland, Oregon to Ontario,
Calirfornia a mid plane door plog ejected from the plane and left a huge hole in the side
of the aircraft at sixteen-thousand feet. The reason the doorplug fell off was due to critical
blots not being properly attached to the door to keep it in place. “When investigators
recoved the plug form a backyard in Portland, Ore., they found the door plug itself was

largely intact, with the stop pins in place. The bolts, though, have not been recovered.”
(New York Times, 2024) This incident has negatively affected the passengers on that
flight and put their lives at risk. This incident has also negatively harmed the reputation
of both Boeing and Alaska Airlines. The incident ultimately lead to 737 MAX -9 planes
with this particular configuration to be grounded and inspected for similar bolt issues.
This was not an isolated incident as one other airline found the same issue with their
aircrafts. “Alaska Airlines and United Airlines said on Monday that they have found
loose parts on their 737 Max 9 aircraft since they started inspecting some of their
grounded boeing jets.” (Rose, 2024). In conclusion, the quality lapses of The Boeing
Company ultimately put many lives at risk in the sky while also damaging the reputation
of their brand, planes, and workers.
