Skin
By Roald Dahl Published May 17, 1952.
Roald Dahl was a known author who was born on September 13, 1913. For his popularity he
even got some of his book made into real movies in theaters. He is still known to this day for
his famous children's books that people read to this day.
The story “Skin” was published by Penguin Puffin books in 1952, a combination of 11
different short stories. The book takes place in Paris in the 1940s, Drioli is the main character
of the story and is mainly seen as a homeless beggar who wanders in the streets of the city.
However, when he was a young man, he used to be a rich successful tattoo artist. He used to
get a good amount of money from tattooing soldiers and sailors, during the successful period
in his life he had spent most of his time with his wife Josie and his friend Soutine. Soutine
was a talented painter, Drioli’s passion for art caused him to convince Soutine to tattoo a
portrait of his wife Josie on his back. Little did Drioli know that the tattoo would be the cause
of his death.
My thoughts
I have lots of opinions on the book, I have a few dislikes because I usually prefer books that
are a full story and not just small stories combined in one book. I found it quite boring to read
as it isn’t my interest, I mostly read books about fantasy and adventures. Some of the words
were a bit difficult to understand especially how Roald Dahl usually uses some difficult words
such as ‘marvelous’ or ‘flannel’. Despite it all the book was easy to read and I read it pretty
quickly as I am used to reading thick books. I have dislikes but also favorites such as the story
“The wish” caught my interest. A story of a young boy that believes by dodging the black and
red parts of the carpet he will get what he wants for his birthday. The color of the carpet is
important as the yellow simbolizes safety while the black and red symbolizes a snakes and
fire. It’s a form of imagination in the boys mind and a challenge for him. The boy is clearly
afraid to walk across the carpet, but for him this is a challenge he can’t lose.

I enjoyed the story as it was interesting even if it ended in a cliffhanger making me want to
find out what happened to the boy in the end. It’s interesting how Roald Dahl’s writing is
different than other usual authors. He has some comedy in his books while also some tragic
parts too. I honestly recommend the story to children who are interested in reading English.
“Skin” could be maybe a bit scary for some but it’s a perfect amount of words in each page.
Despite all I think his writing technique is very unique and interesting but it didn’t catch much
of my interest and I like more excitement. The words could be a bit hard for some people to
understand, but despite it all a wonderful book !
I give it a :
