“Now,” she asked Johnny, “what word would we
have if we placed a ‘K’ in the front?”
Deadline is May 1

the VFW
After a moment’s reflection, Johnny said,
“Canoe?”
On the first day of college, the Dean addressed the
students, pointing out some of the rules.
“The female dormitory will be out-of-bounds for
all male students, and the male dormitory to the female
students. Anybody caught breaking this rule will be
fined $25 the first time.”
He continued, “Anybody caught breaking this
rule the second time will be fined $50. Being caught a
third time will incur a hefty fine of $100. Are there any
questions?”
At this point, a male student in the crowd inquired:
“How much for a season pass?”

Did you hear the one about the

believe what
people do in the

I was in the church

But, not to really fear, people who did mail their
children did not just hand over their children to just
anyone. Especially in rural areas, the families knew their
mailman very well or their friends or family members
worked for the Postal Service.
One child by the name of May Pierstorff, was mailed
to her grandparents and was taken there by way of a
postal worker relative on the Railway Mail train. She
lived with her parents in Idaho and they paid a whole
.53 cents in stamps, that they attached to the young
child’s coat. That trip was 73 miles in 1914.
Well… this incident got back to the Postmaster
General along with another inquiry about how to mail
children through the mail and that did it! He banned
the postal workers from accepting humans as mail,
according to Nancy Pope, curator of history for the
National Postal Museum. This new regulation wasn’t
really instilled right away though and it certainly didn’t
stop people from sending their kids via by post!
A year later, a woman actually mailed her six year old
daughter from her home in Florida to her father’s home
in Virginia! It was the longest postal trip ever for any of
the children mailed, a whopping 720 miles and cost the
mother 15 cents in stamps!
In August 1915, there was a three year old, named
Maud Smith that looks like was the last mail delivery by
US Post. She was sent from her grandparents home in
Kentucky, 40 miles away through Kentucky to visit her
sick mother. After word got out about this trip, there
was an investigation that questioned the postmaster in
Caney, Kentucky to see why they had allowed the small
child on the mail train when it was against regulations. or sent overseas, in line with the European practice of

Pope did say “he probably had a lot of explaining to do!” And all seriousness aside,

By the way, a little trivia: ~ Lin and Frank
On July 26, 1775, a year before declaring
Independence from Great Britain, the Continental
Congress appointed Benjamin Franklin the first
American Postmaster General.
Before this, back in Colonial times, correspondence
depended on merchants, friends and even Native
Americans to carry messages to the colonies from
across the pond, until 1630 when the General Court of
Massachusetts designated Richard Fairbanks’ tavern in
Boston as the official repository for mail brought from
