Assignment Narrative
For Questions 1 through 7, choose an organization with an extensive information systems department
and set of information system applications. You should choose one with which you are familiar,
possibly your employer, your university, or an organization where a friend / relative works. Use the
same organization for each question: -

1) Investigate whether the organization follows more of a traditional file processing

approach or the database approach to organizing data. How many different database
applications does the organization have and which vendor technology (Opensource or
otherwise) are they using?
2) What is the architecture of their information system? Is the organization using some form
of client/server architecture? If it’s a multi-tier application then, is it 2-tier, 3 tier or higher
multi-tier application. Interview information systems managers in this organization to find
out why they chose the architecture for the Information System.
3) Identify, Collect, and document the functional requirements for any prospective system
after visiting organization.
4) Interview a database analyst or systems analyst and document how he or she decides on
names for data objects in data models. Does the organization in which this person works
have naming guidelines?
5) Ask a database or systems analyst in the organization to show you an E-R diagram for one
of the organization’s primary databases. Ask questions to be sure you understand what
each entity, attribute, and relationship means. Does this organization use the same E-R
notation used in the textbook? If not, what other or alternative symbols are used and what
do these symbols mean?
6) Elicit common examples of supertype/subtype relationships you may encounter in the
organization. You will have to explain the meaning of this term to the person you are
interviewing and provide a common example, such as PROPERTY: RESIDENTIAL,
COMMERCIAL or BONDS: CORPORATE, MUNICIPAL. Use the information the person
provides to construct an EER diagram segment and present it to the person.
7) Obtain a common document such as a sales slip, customer invoice, credit card statement,
etc from organization you are interacting with. Use the normalization steps (steps 0
through 4) discussed in this semester to convert this user view to a set of relations in 3rd
normal form. Also draw a relational schema. List several integrity rules that you would
recommend ensuring the quality of the data in this application.
