Procedia CIRP 61 (2017) 1

Preface

This special issue of Procedia CIRP contains the proceeding of the 24th CIRP Conference
on Life Cycle Engineering (CIRP LCE 2017) held in Kamakura, Japan from March 8 to 10, 2017.
Since 1994, the CIRP Conference on Life Cycle Engineering has continued to provide a
valuable and prominent forum for discussing basic research, applications, and up-to-date practices in
the field of life cycle engineering. Many of the environmental problems, however, have not been
solved. Recently, new trends such as IoT (Internet of Things), cyber physical systems, and big data
analysis, are emerging. By employing these tools, we may embark on a new stages of the life cycle
engineering toward sustainable society. This is why the central theme of this conference is set as “Next
stage of sustainable manufacturing in IoT Era.”
This year we have received over 250 abstract and full paper submissions from 21 countries,
resulting in a total of 138 papers accepted after rigorous peer review and revision processes. This is the
third time to hold the event in Japan after 10 years intervals. It is hosted by the life cycle engineering
technical committee of the Japan Society of Precision Engineering. The papers cover a wide variety of
topics in life cycle engineering; among others, the number of papers related to remanufacturing,
manufacturing systems, and cyber physical systems increased. Moreover, the program includes three
organized sessions; “Lifetime,” “Sustainable Consumption and Production,” and “Industrial session.”
We organized “Industrial session” since the advanced technologies and practical needs in industrial
applications contain rich suggestions to the advancement of life cycle engineering.
We sincerely hope that the conference provided a forum for everyone who wishes to
contribute to exchanging novel ideas to accelerate the implementation of the life cycle engineering.
We would like to thank all the participants for their contributions, as well as the organizing
team for their unlimited efforts. We would also like to extend our gratitude to the members of the
Scientific Committees for their support especially in reviewing papers. The conference program would
not be possible without the generous financial support of our industry sponsors, including Denso,
DMG MORI, and Mazak Foundation, as well as public sponsors including JSPS Grant-in-Aid for
Publication of Scientific Research Results and the Japan World Exposition 1970 Commemorative
Fund.
