Introduction to
Internet of Things
(IoT)
The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to the network of physical devices,
vehicles, home appliances, and other items embedded with electronics,
software, sensors, and network connectivity, which enable these objects to
collect and exchange data. This interconnected ecosystem is transforming
how we live, work, and interact with the world around us.
What Are IoT Devices?
IoT devices are special devices that can do things like collect information, perform tasks on their own,
and connect to the internet or other networks. They have different parts like a small computer,
sensors, and wireless communication modules. These devices are used in many different ways, like
controlling things remotely or gathering data from the environment.

• Important Parts: IoT devices have a small computer, sensors, and wireless communication
modules.

• Embedded Systems: They use a special kind of computer system that does specific tasks all
by itself.

• Connecting to Networks: IoT devices can connect to the internet or other networks using
special wireless technologies like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ZigBee, or LoRaWAN.
Sensors and Actuators in IoT
In the world of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, sensors and actuators are
like the eyes and hands of these smart devices. Sensors collect information
from the real world, while actuators help these devices interact with and
control their surroundings.

From sensors that measure temperature and detect movement, to actuators

like LED lights and motors, these parts work together to create smart
systems that can understand, analyze, and respond to what's happening
around them.
Microcontrollers and Single-Board
Computers
Microcontrollers and single-board computers
are the core building blocks of IoT devices.
Microcontrollers are self-contained,
programmable chips that can interface with
sensors, actuators, and other components.
Single-board computers, like Raspberry Pi,
provide more processing power and versatility
for complex IoT applications.

These compact, low-power devices enable IoT

devices to sense, process, and communicate
data autonomously, making them essential for
deploying IoT solutions at scale.
Wireless Communication for IoT
• Bluetooth A wireless technology used for small IoT devices like wearables and smart
home sensors.

• Wi-Fi A wireless protocol for IoT devices that need internet connectivity, like smart
appliances.

• Zigbee A wireless protocol for low-power IoT applications like lighting and home automation.
