All jobsite work activities must comply with applicable Otis Safety Policies and
local regulatory requirements. If you are unsure of the requirements, please stop
work immediately and consult your supervisor or EH&S.
This TIP outlines the process for a one-time update. Once the
update has been completed on an applicable v2 GECB core
board running an affected software version, the subject board
will not require further updating of the secondary boot loader.
A single Updater OMU (p/n AAA37024AAA) can be used as
needed on many GECB based systems.
Description
When an OMU2 (e.g., DCA26800H21 4MB) is used on a GECB based control, the
GECB core board may not boot from the OMU. Instead, it may boot directly into the
control software main menu. The user might suspect that the OMU2 is blank or
defective. It is important to know that the user can identify an OMU2.
The OMU2 is BLUE in color. Also, the OMU2 has a label on each side (see Figure 1).
Disregard the notation “Apply for .omu2 software ONLY.”
The part number prefix, in this case DCA, also differentiates the OMU2 from the OMU,
which has DAA and DBA prefixes.
This TIP provides instructions for using p/n AAA37024AAA Updater OMU to upgrade the
secondary boot loader running on the GECB core board.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION PUBLICATION January 6, 2021
Background
The Otis Memory Unit (OMU) is used as a memory device to backup, upgrade, and
restore baseline and contract data on current Otis elevator and escalator control
systems.
In 2019, the OMU vendor changed the manufacturer of the internal storage device from
those previously used in OMUs (DAA26800H* or DBA26800H*).
NOTE: This issue does not affect v1 (version 1) GECB boards (p/n AxA26800AMLx).
Only version 2 GECB boards (p/n AxA26800AVPx), which are running
secondary loader version AAA31459AAD or earlier, require the patch to allow
OMU2 devices to boot.
When a user boots up an OMU2, some GECB secondary boot loader versions, which
reside on the core board, will test for a specific vendor’s memory storage device within
the OMU.
If the secondary boot loader routine determines that the OMU flash device is not allowed,
the OMU boot process is aborted, and the GECB will boot up the control software (e.g., 1
= OCSS, 2 = MCSS, etc., in the case of GCS controls).
To correct this issue when using an OMU2, Otis Engineering has created an Updater
OMU p/n AAA37024AAA. When installed, this update will test, then modify (patch) the
affected (v2) GECB’s secondary boot loader software to allow it to recognize other
internal storage device manufacturers.
Going forward, software baseline releases that use OMUs as a file storage media, will
include the Updater Patch. Consequently, the Updater OMU is not needed in this case.
See the instructions on installing the OMU2 Patch using the Updater OMU.

Instructions
If you are reading this TIP, chances are you were using an OMU2 that would not boot
to the standard OMU menu. Instead, the GECB would boot directly to the control
software menu. Possible causes include:
To confirm if the OMU2 you are trying to use is BLANK, refer to TIP 1.1.22.1, Updating
GECB Software with the Otis OMU. Figure 2 provides graphic representation of
whether the OMU2 Patch (X) is required.
1. See p. 6 to determine the version of the secondary boot loader that is currently
running. If it is AAA31459AAD or earlier, perform the Updater OMU patch. If it is
a later version, it is likely that the OMU2 you were trying to use was blank or
defective.
2. Remove elevator from service, ensuring that the elevator is empty, and the car
doors have closed.

4. Open the main line disconnect and install an Updater OMU AAA37024AAA in the
OMU port of a GECB (v2) core board.
5. Connect an SVT or iPhone with Service App to the service tool port on the
GPCB1 or GECB I/O board.
6. Close the main line disconnect to apply power to the controller. See Figure 3 for
further instructions.

8. If the Updater OMU fails to boot to the Patch dialog, but instead boots to the
GECB control baseline, the Updater OMU may be blank. Contact your RFE for
further assistance.
NOTE: The latest version of secondary boot loader (computing platform secondary
loader) is AAA31459AAG (released 11/2019).
The version of the secondary boot loader in any specific control baseline will
differ depending on when, and if, the control baseline incorporated it.
