Exercise sheet 8: Integral calculus December 2023

Exercise 1

Compute the surface highlighted in gray in the graph below:

y
2x 2 − 1/5

x
−2x 2 + 4/5

Exercise 2

Compute the following improper integral

Z1
ln x dx.
0

(Hint: integration by parts).

Exercise 3

The velocity v at which blood is flowing in a blood vessel of radius R and length l at a position with
distance r from the middle axis is given by

P
R2 − r 2 .

v (r ) =
4η l

Here P is the difference in pressure between the start and the end of the blood vessel and η is the
viscosity of blood.
Determine the average velocity over 0 ≤ r ≤ R. Compare the average velocity to the maximal velocity.
Exercise 4

A glass is modeled by rotating the branch of the hyperbola y 2 − x 2 = 1 for which y > 0 (inner lateral
surface) and the curve x = y , x ≥ 0 (outer lateral surface) around the y-axis. To the top it is limited by
the plane y = 3. All coordinates are given in cm.

Abbildung 1: Visualization of the glass (Source: T. Arens, Arbeitsbuch Mathematik, 4. Auflage, Springer-
Spektrum (2018))

(a) Determine the volume of liquid that can be captured by the glass.
(b) Compute the weight of the empty glass if the material has density ρ = 2.2 cmg 3 .

Exercise 5

For x ∈ R we define Frenel’s integral as

Z x
C(x) = cos(t 2 ) dt.
0

Determine and classify all extrema of the function C.

Exercise 6

For a continuously differentiable function f : [a,b] → R the arc length of the function graph between a
and b can be computed as
Zb p
L= 1 + f 0 (x)2 dx.
a

Compute the arc length of the graph of f (x) = 21 x 2 on the interval [0,1].

(Hint: Substitute x = sinh(t), use cosh2 (t) = 1 + 2
√sinh (t)√and arsinh(t)
 = ln(x + x 2 + 1). Then, use
1
integration by parts. The final result should be 2 2 + ln( 2 + 1) .)
