Government of India. For e.g., Digital India/Skill India/Swachh
Bharat Internship etc.
1.3.1 History of Swachh Bharat
Swatch Bharat Abhiyan, or Clean India Mission is a country-wide campaign
initiated by the Government of India in 2014 to eliminate open defecation and improve
solid waste management. It is a restructured version of the Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan
launched in 2009 that failed to achieve its intended target 3.

Phase 1 of the Swatch Bharat Mission lasted till October 2020.

Phase 2 is being implemented between 2020-21 and 2024-25 to help cement the work of
Phase 1.

Initiated by the Government of India, the mission aimed to achieve an open-

defecation free" (ODF) India by 2 October 2019, the 150th anniversary of the birth of
Mahatma Gandhi through construction of toilets. An estimated 89.9 million toilets were
built in the period. The objectives of the first phase of the mission also included
eradication of manual scavenging, generating awareness and bringing about a behavior
change regarding sanitation practices, and augmentation of capacity at the local level.

The second phase of the mission aims to sustain the open defecation free status
and improve the management of solid and liquid waste, while also working to improve
the lives of sanitation workers. The mission is aimed at progressing towards target 6.2 of
the Sustainable Development Goals Number 6 established by the United Nations in 2015.

Department of CSE, BTI, Bengaluru 5

AICTE Activity Point Program 2023-24

The campaign's official name is in Hindi. In English, it translates to "Clean India

Mission". The campaign was officially launched on 2 October 2014 at Rajghat, New
Delhi by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It is India's largest cleanliness drive to date with
three million government employees and students from all parts of India participating in
4,043 cities, towns, and rural communities.

At a rally in Champaran, the Prime minister called the campaign Satyagrah se

Swatchagrah in reference to Gandhi's Champaran Satyagraha launched on 10 April 1916.
The mission was split into two: rural and urban. In rural areas "SBM - Gramin" was
financed and monitored through the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation (since
converted to the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation under the Ministry of Jal
Shakti; whereas "SBM - urban" was overseen by the Ministry of Housing and Urban
Affairs As part of the campaign, volunteers, known as Swatchhagrahis, or "Ambassadors
of cleanliness", promoted the construction of toilets using a popular method called
Community-Led Total Sanitation at the village level. Other activities included national
real time monitoring and updates from non-governmental organizations such as The Ugly
Indian, Waste Warriors, and SWACH Pune (Solid Waste Collection and Handling).

A local community is the group of interacting people living in a common location.

We all live in a particular community. As we know the environment of every community
isn't same and the large number of waste were thrown everywhere by the community
people. In order to manage and maintain the environment clean we perform some
activities with the group members.

The government provided subsidy for construction of nearly 90 million toilets

between 2014 and 2019, although some Indians especially in rural areas choose to not use
them. The campaign was criticized for using coercive approaches to force people to use
toilets. Some people were stopped from defecating in open and threatened with
withdrawal from government benefits. The campaign was financed by the Government of
India and state governments. The former released $5.8 billion (Rs 40,700 crore) funds for
toilet construction 700,000 villages. The total budget for the rural and urban components
was estimated at $28 billion, 93 per cent for construction and the rest for behavior change
campaigns and administration.

AICTE Activity Point Program 2023-24

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is a Clean India drive and Mission launched as a national
campaign by the Indian Government aimed at maintaining cleanliness of streets, roads
and infrastructure of the country. Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has officially
launched this mission on 2nd of October (the birth anniversary of the Mahatma Gandhi)
in 2014 at Rajghat, New Delhi. While launching the event Prime Minister himself had
cleaned the road. It is the biggest cleanliness drive ever in India where approximately 3
million government employees including students from schools and colleges took part in
the cleanliness activities.

On the day of launch of the event PM himself has nominated the name of nine
people to participate in the cleanliness drive in their own areas. Schools and colleges have
participated in the event by organizing many cleanliness activities according to their own
themes. Students of India participated in this event. PM had also requested to all those
nine nominees to call another nine people separately to participate in this cleanliness
drive as well as continue the chain of calling nine people by each and every participated
candidate of the mission until the message reach to the every Indian in every corner of the
country to make it a national mission.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is one of the most significant and popular missions to
have taken place in India. Swachh Bharat Abhiyan translates to Clean India Mission. This
drive was formulated to cover all the cities and towns of India to make them clean. This
campaign was administered by the Indian government and was introduced by the Prime
Minister, Narendra Modi It was launched on 2nd October in order to honor Mahatma
Gandhi vision of a Clean India. The cleanliness campaign of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was
run on a national level and encompassed all the towns, rural and urban. It served as a
great initiative in making people aware of the importance of cleanliness.

1.3.2 Why India need Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

India is in dire need of a cleanliness drive like Swachh Bharat Abhiyan to
eradicate dirtiness. It is important for the overall development of citizens in terms of
health and well-being. As the majority of the population of India lives in rural areas, it is
a big problem. Generally, in these areas, people do not have proper toilet facilities. They
go out in the fields or roads to excrete. This practice creates a lot of hygiene problems for

Department of CSE, BTI, Bengaluru 7

AICTE Activity Point Program 2023-24

citizens. Therefore, this Clean India mission can be of great help in enhancing the living
conditions of these people.

In other words, Swatch Abhiyan Will help in proper as well. When we will
dispose of waste properly and recycle waste, it will develop the country. As its main
focus is one rural area. Most importantly, it enhances the public health through its
objectives. India is one of the dirtiest countries in the world, and this mission can change
the scenario. Therefore, India needs a cleanliness drive like Swachh Bharat Abhiyan to
achieve this.

In short, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is a great start to make India cleaner and greener.
If all the citizens could come together and participate in this drive, India will soon
flourish. Moreover, when the hygienic conditions of India will improve, all of us will
benefit equally. India will have more tourists visiting it every year and will create a happy
and clean environment for the citizens.

1.4 Activity II: Helping Local Schools to Achieve Good Result and
Enhance their Enrolment in Higher/ Technical/ Vocational Education
As part of All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) activity point
programme, I am the students of VII Semester, Bangalore Technological Institute, CSE
Branch to contribute to help local students improve their performance in exam took the
activity as," Helping local schools to achieve good result and enhance their enrolment in
Higher/ Technical/ Vocational education." The activity was held at three different venues
ie The Government Higher Primary School, Kodhati.

AICTE Activity Point Program 2023-24

First the activity was performed on the Government Higher Primary School,
Kodhati, Bangalore-560035 which has been shown in Fig. 1.1 above and I went to school
with permission of our college, there we talked with principal about our activity
programme. We cleared all doubt of principal regarding our programme. We presented
our programme what things we included for teaching students. Finally, we were allowed
to enter class. As we entered classroom, it was like big hall room with decorative teaching
material. We, four-member team took care of them and taught them for two hours. While
we were introducing, most student didn't speak English properly. Some of them didn't
know speak English also. We talked to principal about this subject, and then we came to
know there is not good English teacher for teaching them. However, we were helping
them for only short period, these students need good English teacher.

1.5 Activity III: Facilitating 100% Digitized Transactions

Digital payment is a way of payment which is made through digital modes. In
digital payments, payer and payee both use digital modes to send and receive money. It is
also called electronic payment. No hard cash (currency notes) is involved in the digital
payments. All the transactions in digital payments are completed through online. It is an
instant and convenient way to make payments.

Currently available digital payment systems include Banking cards, Digital

wallets, Unified Payment Interface (UPI), Unstructured Supplementary Service Data
(USD),Immediate Payment Service (IMPS), Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS),
National Electronic Fund Transfer (NEFT), Aadhar Enabled Payment System (AEPS)
and Mobile banking. With recent advances technologies, digital payments is having an
impact on our daily lives and beginning to offer interesting and advantageous new
services. According to RBI Bulletin cashless transaction in India increasing day by day.
The statistics in report shows that in Nov.2016 and Dec. 2016 the total value transaction
done using E-Wallet was 50.74 billion and 97.70 billion respectively and in Jan. 2017 it is
increased up to 108.69 Billion. According to the survey conducted by Cash Karo India, E-
Wallet payment method is more preferred by customers than other payment methods. The
users of Smart phone have been increased randomly; this has also paved the way for
digital transactions. In 2015-2016, a total of Rs. 4018 billion transacted through mobile
banking as compared to Rs. 60 billion in 2012- 2013.

Department of CSE, BTI, Bengaluru 9

AICTE Activity Point Program 2023-24

The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved
'Pradhan Mantri Gramin Digital Saksharta Abhiyan' (PMGDISHA) to make 6 crore rural
households digitally literate. The outlay for this project is Rs 2,351.38 crore to usher in
digital literacy in rural India by March 2019. PMGDISHA is expected to be one of the
largest digital literacy programmes in the world. Under the scheme, 25 lakh candidates
will be trained in the fiscal year 2016-17, 275 lakhs in fiscal year 2017-18 and 300 lakh in
fiscal year 2018-19. The Committee on Digital Payments constituted by the Ministry of
Finance, Department of Economic Affairs has recommended for the medium-term
strategy for accelerating growth of Digital Payments. However, many of the digital
payment methods are not popular among the common people and people are not
comfortable to use them for their day-today's transactions. There is less awareness among
the people about different types of digital payment methods.

1.5.1 Types of Digital Payments

Payment Cards:
The most common types of payment cards are credit cards and debit cards.
Payment cards are usually embossed plastic cards, 85.60 × 53.98 mm in size, which
comply with the ISO/IEC 7810 ID-1 standard. They usually also have an embossed card
number conforming to the ISO/IEC 7812 numbering standard. Most commonly, a
payment card is electronically linked to an account or accounts belonging to the
cardholder. These accounts may be deposit accounts or loan or credit accounts, and the
card is a means of authenticating the cardholder. The information required for using
payment cards are Card Verification Value (CVV Number) and Expiry date of the
payment card.

Credit Card:
The first universal credit card, which could be used at a variety of establishments,
was introduced by the Diners' Club, Inc., in 1950. Another major card of this type, known
as a travel and entertainment card, was established by the American Express Company in
1958.Central Bank of India was the first public bank to introduce Credit card. The issuer
of a credit card creates a line of credit (usually called a credit limit) for the cardholder on
which the cardholder can borrow. The cardholder can choose either to repay the full
outstanding balance by the payment due date or to repay a smaller amount, not less than
the "minimum amount" by that date.

Department of CSE, BTI, Bengaluru 10

AICTE Activity Point Program 2023-24

Debit Card:
Debit card was introduced by Citi Bank. With a debit card, when a cardholder
makesa purchase, funds are withdrawn directly from the cardholder's bank account. A
debit card is a payment card that deducts money directly from a consumer's checking
account when it is used. Also called "check cards" or "bank cards,"

Smart Card:
Banks are adding chips to their current magnetic stripe cards to enhance security
and offer new service, called Smart Cards. Smart Cards allow thousands of times of
information stored on magnetic stripe cards. In addition, these cards are highly secure,
more reliable and perform multiple functions. They hold a large amount of personal
information, from medical and health history to personal banking and personal
preferences.

Charge Card:
With charge cards, the cardholder is required to pay the full balance shown on the
statement, which is usually issued monthly, by the payment due date. It is a form of short-
term loan to cover the cardholder's purchases.

Unified Payments Interface (UPI):

Unified Payment Interface (UPI) is a new payment interface introduced by
National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) under the supervision of Government of
India to promote a cashless-society and mobile banking. Unified Payments Interface (UPI)
is a system that powers multiple bank accounts to use several banking services like fund
transfer, and merchant payments in a single mobile application. Sending and receiving
money through UPI payment app is like sending and receiving a text message on your
Smartphone. A user need not have multiple banking app installed in his/her Smartphone.
A user can simply add all the bank accounts in a single UPI payment app without the
hassle of remembering or even typing banking user ID/Passwords. Each Bank provides its
own UPI App for Android, Windows and iOS mobile platform(s). The information
required for UPI based transaction are Virtual Payment Address (VPA) of recipient and
Mobile banking Personal Identification Number (MPIN). By sharing VPA, funds can be
transferred and money can be collected.

Department of CSE, BTI, Bengaluru 11

AICTE Activity Point Program 2023-24

Digital Wallets:
A Digital wallet is a way to carry cash in digital format. Credit card or debit card
information should be linked to digital wallet application or money can be transferred in
online to mobile wallet. Instead of using physical plastic card to make purchases, it can be
paid through smartphone, tablet, or smart watch. The Services offered by Digital Wallets
are Balance Enquiry, Passbook/ Transaction history, Add money, Accept Money, Pay
money etc. Digital wallets are composed of both digital wallet devices and digital wallet
Systems.

Aadhaar Enabled Payment Service (AEPS):

The AEPS system leverages Aadhaar online authentication and enables Aadhaar
Enabled Bank Accounts (AEBA) to be operated in anytime-anywhere banking mode
through Micro ATMs. This system is controlled by the National Payments Corporation of
India (NPCI). Aadhaar Enabled Payment System is a way to get money from the bank
account. This system of getting money neither requires your signature nor Debit card. It is
also not needed to visit a bank branch for getting money through the Aadhaar Enabled
Payment System. For AEPS transaction following information is needed.
1. Aadhaar Number
2. Bank Issuer Identification Number (IN) or Name
3. Finger Print

Mobile Banking:
Mobile banking is a service provided by a bank or other financial institution that
allows its customers to conduct different types of financial transactions remotely using a
mobile device such as a mobile phone or tablet. It uses software, usually called an app,
provided by the banks or financial institution for the purpose. Each Bank provides its own
mobile banking App for Android, Windows and iOS mobile platforms). The earliest
mobile banking services used SMS, a service known as SMS banking. With the
introduction of smart phones with Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) support enabling
the use of the mobile web in 1999, the first European banks started to offer mobile
banking on this platform to their customers. Mobile banking is known as M-banking or
SMS Banking. The European company called PayBox supported financially by Deutsche
Bank, in 1999 started mobile banking.

Department of CSE, BTI, Bengaluru 12

AICTE Activity Point Program 2023-24

Internet Banking:
Internet banking, also known as online banking, e-banking or virtual banking, is
an electronic payment system that enables customers of a bank or other financial
institution to conduct a range of financial transactions through the financial institution's
website. Online banking was first introduced in the early 1980s in New York, United
States. Four major banks - Citibank, Chase Bank, Chemical Bank and Manufacturers
Hanover - offered home banking services.

Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS):

RTGS is defined as the continuous (real-time) settlement of funds transfers
individually on an order-by-order basis (without netting). 'Real Time' means the
processing of instructions at the time they are received rather than at some later time;
'Gross Settlement' means the settlement of funds transfer instructions occurs individually
(on an instruction-by-instruction basis).

2.1.2 College environment

Swachh Bharat Mission is on its move today, Swachh Daktarkhana is an integral
part of it. Around the college there were large amount of waste which is mostly
biodegradable. In order to maintain cleanliness in the college we decided to clean our
college by making the group member. Mostly the environment of college was good in
condition but due to the ignorance and behavior of some students, a large amount of
waste was thrown everywhere. We made groups and started to clean our college and
learned about the importance of healthy environment.

First we introduced our self with name what we are reading and for what purpose
we were there. Similarly, we asked them their name and what they want to be in the
future. They were curious and asking what an engineer does. We gave them basic
knowledge about different engineering fields and told them as per their interest they can

join any field but before that they must work hard in their study, try to get good marks.
On the first day when I and my friends went to school, we knew that the strength of
students is already less and many of them were absent.

2.3.1 Chikkakannalli Village

In the villages usually women's form a community group where they gather at one
place, discuss on several issues, collect certain amount and give that amount to someone
at certain interest rate if they are in need. So, I thought of teaching them to pay bill
digitally. I came to know about 4-5 groups and only was there among them which held
between 4 April-04 April. So, I had given its name for performing activity.

At around 11 am I went there. They were sitting outside at one of their houses.
Later came to know that few of them were Dalits and are not allowed to go inside house
of higher cast. Still such superstitious and unhuman activities are common. It may still
take time to eradicate it. I first let them finish their discussions. As soon as they finished, I

took the permission to start the activity. Everyone was amazed this time seeing me
actively involved in social work. First, I told to bring them bill. They bought around 4-5
bills and first showed them how to open and set up application. I mainly focused on those
who knew to read. it might be difficult to remember them steps. I made some women's
who knew to read sit near me and rest little far. I told them in the beginning not to think
negative. if they will learn will teach you but if you learn now for minutes and forgot later
it will not make any sense.

First, I installed Google app on their mobile phone and told them how it was done.
Then told them if they saw electricity option in the menu. I let everyone see where it was.
After entering the details correctly, told them to click on proceed. Few others were trying
on their mobile as well and starting telling other that this much is my amount, it is
showing exactly same as it was in bill. I sent money to their account and paid the bill of
one individual. I asked them was it easy or hard? They told not that much tough but if
they did. they could easily learn. I recorded the entire process through screen recording
and shared that video among them so that if they forgot as well, they would remember
very easily. I added Rs. 100 fund to one the individuals account and charged her Rs.50 for
that. I told her to pay the bill of others and take Rs.15-20 charge from them. I told them
they could get their bill paid form her and don't have to go far for simple task. It will save
their time and money both. They usually have bill of Rs.30-Rs.90 and have to go too far.
This might have helped to solve the problem to some extent.

REFLECTION NOTES
Through AICTE Activity the first thing for me was to be able to interact with the
people closely and gain confidence about doing seminars and put my words among them
which I had not done before. Being one of the qualified citizens from village it was my
pleasure to put few words in a mass and teach people what I know which might help them
to do certain task very easily and efficiently as well. Further, I was able to interact with
the students as well. Being a person who grew up reading in the school and getting back
an opportunity to teach and myself introduce to around 100 students was really a great
opportunity. It was nice feeling to share my experience with them, guide them what they
can do in near future and helping them in their studies to get good result. Moreover, the
dream to promote my place got few steps ahead with the activity. Along with the place,
many people got to know who Narayan Shrestha is personally being also an achievement.

Through AICTE activity I not only helped to score good marks, to manage
garbage in a proper to local community and to promote Swachh Bharat indeed it also
helped me to be active in social service and improve my communication and interaction
with the people.

CHAPTER 4

CONCLUSION

4.1 Activity I: Contribution to any national level initiative

Government of India. For e.g., Digital India/Skill India/Swachh Bharat
Internship etc.
The relationship between cleanliness and better health has been propagated since
the inception of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. The transition of a cleaner India to a
healthier India has been advocated by numerous public figures, from the Prime Minister
to film actors and sportsmen. In 1990, deaths due to unsafe water and sanitation consisted
of 13 per cent of total deaths across the country. BY 2016, the percentage had come down
to 5 per cent. Though the decrease is significant, it is still quite high. The states of
Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan have sanitation coverage of 80
per cent and above, signaling stark changes in their sanitation figures.
While no national or state level survey has yet been conducted on the overall
impact of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in states, several organizations have recorded their
observations across states in studying the impact of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan on health
and its improvement. As per data from Global Health Observatory, child diarrhea deaths
in India decreased from 1,21,889 in 2014 to 1,17,285 in 2015 to 1,02,813 in 2016. In the
two years since Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was launched, the percentage of under-five
children dying from diarrhea came down from 13% to 9%.

4.2 Activity II: Helping Local Schools to Achieve Good Result and
Enhance their Enrolment in Higher/ Technical/ Vocational Education.

When we talk about government school especially in India and our country Nepal,
everyone think that government school is not good because of less infrastructures, lack of
quality education, lack of proper management and maintenance, etc. If people have some
money, they refer to send their children to private schools instead of sending them to
government schools. Time has changed, private schools, institutions are modernized day
to day, but government schools don't change nor government tried to change or
modernize such government schools. This system of education should be changed.
Government should take immediate and long terms action in order to improve

Department of CSE, BTI, Bengaluru 21

AICTE Activity Point Program 2023-24

government schools. Government should provide sufficient funding, quality teacher, to

each and every government schools.
They should change the system and modernize it to produce quality students who
can compete with other students. So we should take these problems of government
schools seriously and raise our voice from every society to aware the concern authority
and also try to give our best to make them best from our side.

4.3 Activity III: Facilitating 100% Digitized Transactions

During this period, I helped local people how the bill is paid digitally without
using cash. They also seemed positive about performing other things like doing recharge
of either mobile or DTH or internet. I also told them that they will not need to pay any
extra money if they knew to do it and they will also be provided cashback if they use
digital payment System.

Some people are educated enough to understand how it's done but they don't have
any idea about it. Through this activity, I am sure that many people either directly or
indirectly get benefitted in terms of many things. Digitization is the future and not far
from here. It can be made more effective if one introduces such programmers at a greater
level. The government must put some efforts as it will definitely help to control
corruption and leakage of currency as well.
