Before anything else, let’s do the measuring.

First, measure your bust and split the size in half then
minnus 2. That will be the length of the foundation chain that
you are going to make for the shell stitch design in the front
part of the top.

Ex. Bust measurement is 34 inches. Half is 17 inches minus

2 equals to 15 inches.

Second, measure from your under bust across your breast up to your
armpit line. This will be the length of multiple rows of shell stitch that
you are going to make for the front part of the top. More than enough
to cover your breast for a tube-like top.

Ex. 7 inches.

Third, measure your under bust. The total will be divided into 4. You
will need this for the bottom part design. Hem part.

Ex. 30 inches under bust ÷ 4 = 7.5 inches

Fourth, measure the length of your armpit level (front) all
the way up and down below your wing bone (back). This is
for the sleeves. I hope you get the illustration where to
measure.

Front (shell stitch design)

1.Make a foundation chain and begin row 1

Work a starting or foundation chain. The starting chain should have a series of chain stitches in
a multiple of 6 stitches plus 2 with the length using the measurement you did awhile ago following
the first measurement above.

For example, in this swatch, I used a starting

chain of 20 (3 multiples of 6 plus 2 extra stitch).

For how many times you multiple the 6 will also

be the count of your shells in first row. (20 – 2
added chains = 18. 18 ÷ 6 = 3)

Work a single crochet stitch into the second

chain stitch from your hook.

Benj
2.Crochet the first shell

Skip the next two chain stitches then work a

double crochet stitch to the next chain after that.
Work four more dc into the same chain stitch for a
total of five dc. This set of five double crochet
stitches creates the shell.

3.Anchor The First Shell

Skip the next two chains then work a single

crochet o the next chain after the unworked 2
chains. Now you have your first completed
crochet shell, anchored on each side.

Repeat the following:

°Skip the next two chains.

°Work five double crochet stitches into the next chain stitch.

°Skip two chains.

°Single crochet in the next chain.

°Repeat until the end of the row, ending with a single crochet in the final
stitch.

Benj
4.Begin Row 2 With a Half Shell

Turn your work. Chain 2 (count as double

crochet) and work two double crochets into the
first stitch. This gives you a total of three
stitches at the beginning of the row.

5.Anchor The Half Shell

Skip the next two stitches, and work a single crochet stitch into the
next double crochet. You should work into the center stitch in the
grouping of shell stitches in the row below.

6.Continue Row 2

Skip the next two stitches. Work a group of

five double crochets (another shell) into the
next stitch.

Unauthorized distribution of this pattern is prohibited

Benj
Repeat these steps over and over again across the row:

°Skip the next two stitches. Work a single crochet stitch into the middle of the next shell.

°Skip the next two stitches. Work a group of five double crochet stitches into the next stitch.

°When you reach the end of the row, work three double crochet stitches into the last single crochet,
forming another half shell.

7.Begin Row 3

Chain 1 (ignore stitch) and make a single crochet stitch into the first stitch.

Repeat this sequence across the row, alternating shells and single crochet stitches all the way
across:

°Skip the next two stitches. Work a group of five double crochet stitches into the next stitch.

°Skip the next two stitches. Work a single crochet stitch into the middle of the next shell.

°At the end of the row, work your last single crochet stitch into the turning chain.

8.Crochet Shells: Continue Pattern

Repeat rows two and three for your pattern repeat until you reach the length needed. The second
that you made awhile ago. But please make sure to end with a row starting with half shell or even
number total of rows. (Picture below) We need that later for easy decrease.

In the picture.

I used spun polyester yarn 12 ply with 3.00

mm hook size. I started with a 15 inches
chains and I made multiple rows of shell
stitch that measured 7 inches long with 20
total rows

Note: Measurement varies per size and

stitch count varies to yarn size used.

Bottom Design (hem)

Use the equation of the measurement done from your under bust divided into four.

Find your front side of the shell stitch rows. Any side will do, you just have to pick which one.

1. Attach yarn to the last stitch of your foundation chain. Make

multiple chains composing the length of the third
measurement asked above. Then cut yarn.

2. Attach yarn to the very first stitch of your foundation chain and
start chaining the same length and count as what you did to
the other side but don’t cut the yarn.

3. Add 1 chain to the multiple chains that you made and single
crochet to the 3rd chain from hook. That added 1 chain will
count as your first single crochet.

4. Make single crochet each chain until you reach the shell stitch area and stop. Study the
sequence as shown in the picture below.

Unauthorized distribution of this pattern is prohibited

Benj
Make 2 single crochets in every visible hole from the chain 2 spaces in between shell and
anchor stitch.

Then continue single crochet to next added chains until you reach the last chain stitch.

5. Row 1. Turn your work. Chain 2 (count as double

crochet) and double crochet to the next stitch.
*Chain 1, skip 1 stitch and double crochet to the
next*. Repeat ** until you only have 1 stitch
space. Double crochet to that very last stitch. Like
in the beginning of the row, you have 2 double
crochets next to each other before the mesh
stitch.

6. Row 2. Turn your work. Chain 3 (count as treble

crochet) then treble crochet to the next stitch. And
in top of the 3rd double crochet, make a wide v
stitch. (Double crochet, chain 4 and double
crochet to the same stitch). Do this until you reach
the 3rd to the last double crochet stitch. And in the
last 2 double crochet stitches from the previous row, make treble crochet next to each other.

Unauthorized distribution of this pattern is prohibited

Benj
7. Row 3. Turn your work. Chain 3 (count as treble crochet) and make
treble crochet to the next stitch. In the center of chain space of v-
stitch from the previous row, put your v-stitch. This time make 5
chains in between double crochets. (Double crochet, chain 5,
double crochet to the same chain space)

8. Rows 4-6 Continue row 3.

But in the end of row 6, chain 2 inches long

in multiple of 3 + 2. Ex, 6 + 2. The number of
chains varies per yarn size. Just measure
more or less 2 inches long.

Then slip stitch to the next 3rd chain from the

first stitch of row 6.

9. Row 7. Chain 7 (count as double crochet and chain 5 space) and double crochet to the same
stitch.

Continue making v-stitches across row 7 and your last v-stitch before get to the added
chains should be in top of the last treble crochet from the previous row.

Then *double crochet to the 3rd chain, skipping 2 chains. Chain 5 and double crochet to the
same stitch*. Repeat ** until you only have 2 chain left then slip stitch to the 2nd chain from
the first stitch of the row.

Unauthorized distribution of this pattern is prohibited

Benj
10. Row 8. Chain 2 and slip stitch to the center of the first v-stitch. Chain 7 (count as double
crochet and chain 5 space) then double crochet to the same chain space. Continue making
v-stitches until you reach the end of the row then slip stitch to the 2 nd chain from the first stitch
of the row.

11. Continue the steps for #10 and make multiple of rows according to your preference.
(I made 17 rows in total for the sample)

12. End row. Shell stitch. In the chain 5

space of v-stitch, make 5 double
crochets. That is your first shell.
Anchor your shell or make single
crochet in between 2 v-stitches. And
continue.

Unauthorized distribution of this pattern is prohibited

Benj
And if you want to make your
Benj into a dress, just add
multiple v-stitch rows with
your desired length before
making shell stitch edging.
