1. The number of passengers in 20 automobiles taxi on a highway is

2 2 4 3 1 1 5 0 1 3
3 1 4 0 1 1 3 0 1 2

(a) Find the mean, mode and median for the data.
(b) Find its range, interquartile range (Quartile 3 – Quartile 1) and standard deviation.

2. The value of investments, by country, held by a fund at the end of October 1997 were as
follows

Country Market value (millions of dollar)

Argentina 123
France 87
Germany 174
Italy 97
Japan 59
Netherlands 1215
Switzerland 68
United Kingdom 1710
United States 15613

(a) Find the mean and median of the list of nine values.
(b) Indicate whether the mean or median is more appropriate for this list.
(c) Find the range, interquartile range and the standard deviation of the data.

3. The following table gives the frequency distribution of the daily commuting times (in
minutes) from home to work for all 25 employees of a company.

Daily Commuting Time (minutes) Number of Employees

0 to less than 10 4
10 to less than 20 9
20 to less than 30 6
30 to less than 40 4
40 to less than 50 2

(a) Calculate the mean of the daily commuting times.

(b) Calculate the variance and standard deviation.
4. The following table gives the frequency distribution of the number of orders received
each day during the past 50 days at the office of a mail-order company.
Number of Orders Frequency
10-12 4
13-15 12
16-18 20
19-21 14

(a) Calculate the mean.

(b) Calculate the variance and standard deviation.

5. The heights of 5 starting players on a basketball team have a mean of 76in., a median of
78in. and a range of 11in.
(a) If the tallest of these five players is replaced by a substitute who is 2in. taller, find
the new mean, median and range.
(b) If the tallest players is replaced by a substitute who is 4in. shorter, which of the
new values (mean, median, range) could you determine, and what would their
new values be?

6. An airline’s records show that its flights between two cities arrive on the average 5.4
minutes late with a standard deviation 1.4 minutes. At least what percentage of its flights
between the two cities arrive anywhere between
(a) 2.6 minutes late and 8.2 minutes late.
(b) 1.6 minutes early and 12.4 minutes late.

7. The Everlast and Endurance brands of car battery are both labeled as lasting 48 months.
In reality, they both have a mean life of 50 months, but Everlast batteries have a standard
deviation of 2 months, while Endurance batteries have a standard deviation of 6 months.
