Aim: To Prepare And Standardize 0.1M Sodium Hydroxide Solution.

Requirements: Conical flask, burette, pipette, volumetric flask, funnel

Reagents: sodium hydroxide, phenolphthalein, potassium hydrogen phthalate (KHP)

Theory: The principle involved in standardization of sodium hydroxide neutralization titration.

It is standardized against acidic primary standard potassium hydrogen phthalate, using
phenolphthalein as an indicator (acidimetry-alkalimetry or neutralization reaction).
Primary standard compound, potassium hydrogen phthalate of analytical grade has purity of
99.9% and almost non hygroscopic. standardization of sodium hydroxide is necessary because it
is hygroscopic in nature (i.e..absorbs moisture and gets liquefied) Further, it available in the form
of pellets. Hence, exact concentration of solution cannot be prepared.

Chemical reaction:

Factor:
From reaction,
1 mole NaOH = 1 mole KHP
1000ml of 1M sodium hydroxide = 204.23g of KHP
1ml of 1M sodium hydroxide = 0.20423g of KHP
1ml of 0.1M sodium hydroxide= 0.020423g of KHP

Procedure:
Preparation of 0.1M sodium Hydroxide: Weigh accurately 4 g of sodium hydroxide, transfer
to 1000 ml volumetric flask, dissolve in a small quantity of water and make up the volume upto
the mark with distilled water.
Standardization of sodium hydroxide: Weigh accurately 0.2 g of potassium hydrogen
phthalate; dissolve in 10ml of carbon dioxide free water. Add 2-3drops of phenolphthalein and
titrate with the prepared sodium hydroxide solution until the color changes from colorless to
pink.
Each ml of 0.1 M sodium hydroxide is equivalent to 0.02046g of KHP, C8H5O4K

Result: The exact molarity of prepared 0.1M sodium hydroxide is ……………..M.

Preparation of 0.1M sodium hydroxide:
Molecular weight of sodium hydroxide= 40g/mole
Molarity,

𝑤𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 𝑖𝑛 𝑔 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑒 1
M = 𝑀𝑜𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑢𝑙𝑎𝑟 𝑤𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑒 ∗ 𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 (𝐿)

weight of solute (g) = 0.1 * 40 * 1

= 4.0 g sodium hydroxide
Standardization of 0.1M sodium hydroxide:
Observations:
Burette: ..x..M sodium hydroxide
Conical flask: 0.2 g potassium hydrogen phthalate (KHP) + 10 ml water
Indicator: Phenolphthalein
End point: Colorless to light pink

Observation Table:

Sr. Burette Reading (ml) Average

No. Final Initial Difference (ml)

Burette reading: ………… ml of …x… M sodium hydroxide

Calculations:

Each ml of 0.1 M sodium hydroxide is equivalent to 0.020423g of KHP, C8H5O4K

1 ml of 0.1 M sodium hydroxide  0.020423g of KHP

…B.R.…ml of …x… M sodium hydroxide = 0.2 g KHP

…B.R….. * x * 0.020423 = 1 * 0.1 * 0.2

x = 0.1 * 0.2/ B.R * 0.020423
= …… M sodium hydroxide
OR

Exact molarity of sodium hydroxide,

M= equivalent weight of PSC ∗ burette reading (mL)

= 200 / (204.23 * B.R)

= ……………..M sodium hydroxide
