PARENT & STUDENT
COMMITMENT
The way the world is these days,
with AI and all the advancements
in technology, students need to be
critical and creative thinkers now
more than ever before.

Report writing is an important first

step toward developing these
skills in primary school students.

As with all writing skills, however, creating an excellent report comes

with practice. Students and parents must make a commitment to
implementing what is being taught. Writing regularly, receiving and
responding to feedback, and a systematic approach go a long way
toward writing great reports.

Commit to about 3 sessions a week.

Session 1 = 20 to 30 minutes: review concepts
Session 2 = 20 to 30 minutes: worksheets, guided practice
Session 3 = 40 to 60 minutes: independent practice

At WERD Coach Youth, we can provide everything else - resources,

REPORT WRITING
OUTLINE
Reporting on what they've heard or
seen is something children are very
familiar with. From "telling" on their
siblings to sharing all the goings-on
in the family with teachers, they can
certainly share information.

What they need to learn is how to

separate their opinions and stick to
the facts in chronological order.

REPORT WRITING
OUTLINE
At the end of Term 3, students are
now practiced in all the foundational
skills for report writing. At this point,
they are beginning to combine skills.

During the August break, rather than

focusing on the skills, provide them
with experiences they can draw from
when writing reports, and focus on
building formal vocabulary.

and support their learning within

Gradually build confidence by

tackling one paragraph at a time.

REPORT WRITING
OUTLINE
Vocabulary is just as important in
report writing as it is in narrative
writing. With reports, however,
what students should focus on is
the difference between formal and
informal language.

Continue collecting formal words

and phrases regularly so they can
have what they need.
