CHAPTER 8 WORKSHEET
BANDAGING AND TAPING
MATCHING—Match the following terms with the appropriate response.
D_______ 1. Tape grade A. Can help prevent elbow hyperextension
F_______ 2. Stretch tape B. Otherwise known as closed basketweave
E_______ 3. Linen tape C. Supports injuries of the shoulder, hip, thumb and great toe
G_______ 4. Low-Dye D. Number of fibers per inch of backing material
B_______ 5. Gibney E. Used to support recent or acute injuries of the ankle
H_______ 6. Open basketweave F. Used to conform to smaller body parts
I_______ 7. Rotary knee taping G. Used to provide arch support
J_______ 8. Quadriceps wrapping H. Inelastic material that is frequently used to limit range of motion
A_______ 9. Checkreins I. Can be used for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries
C_______ 10. Spica J. Gives support against gravity for moderate muscle strains

SHORT ANSWER—Answer the following questions with a brief response.

11. What are the two types of tape generally used in sports medicine? Non elastic and elastic adhesive tape.
12. How/where should tape be stored? Should be stored in a cool place, stacked so that tape rests on its flat top or
bottom to avoid distortion of roll.
13. When are triangular and cravat bandages used? They can be used as large dressings, as slings to support a
limb, or to secure a dressing in place.
14. What is the sling and swathe combination designed to do? It is a technique designed to stabilize the arm in
cases of a shoulder dislocation, subluxation, or fracture.
15. When tape is applied and removed daily, what can an athlete experience and how can you prevent this from
occurring? To prevent this from occurring one should always pull tape directly in line with the body, one
hand pulls tape down from the skin while the other holds skin back.
16. What is the function of an elbow figure-8 bandage? It is used to secure dressings and to restrain full extension
with hyperextension injuries.
17. What is kinesio taping and what is it supposed to provide/support? It is the rehabilitative application to
facilitate the body’s natural healing process while providing support and stability to muscles and joints
without restricting the body’s range of motion.
LISTING
List three basic uses for adhesive tape.
18. supporting of injury
19. holding would dressing in place
20. support of recent injury to prevent to prevent additional injuries

List three factors to be considered when purchasing linen tape.

21. tape grade
22. wind tension
23. adhesive mass
List three methods of removing adhesive tape.
24. cutting
25. solvent
26. manual
List four guidelines that should be followed when using an elastic wrap.
27. overlap 1/2 of width of previous layer to prevent separation
28. lot of turns with moderate tension, instead of less higher tension
29. wrapping distally to proximally
30. body part wrapped in mass muscle contraction
ESSAY
Discuss/Outline the general guidelines to follow when applying tape to a body part.
The first guideline would be to known which type of tape to use as different injuries need different types of tape.
When actually applying the tape one should know the motion and the correct amount of tension to apply on the
patient. Another guideline is not to use to much as it may cause irritation form to much pressure and tape is
expensive. After the taping is done one should know how to properly remove the tape from the patient so that the
patient won’t experience irritated skin or pain.
INJURY ASSESSMENT
An athlete has come into the training room before practice with pain in the medial longitudinal arch. While observing
the walking motion, you notice a pronated foot. What type of support you will give to this athlete and why?
I would give teardrop arch taping because the athlete is experiencing pain in the medial longitudinal arch of
the foot. This taping would be great as it will help support the pain and give an arch for the foot. Also this some that
we already learned how to tape last year.

An athlete has just completed an ice treatment for an acutely sprained ankle. Because the athlete is unable to walk
without a limp, you have measured the athlete for crutches. You suspect that the ankle will continue to swell
throughout the night. What taping procedure could you use and why would you use it given the circumstances?

I would apply the horseshoe with elastic wrap with more tension then normal because that will help
push the swelling out ultimately getting rid of the swelling or reducing it severally.
