Factors That Affects In Choosing College Course Of Grade 11 STEM 1 Stud

By:
Serafica, Jenebyb D.
CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study

Choosing a college course is very important in building our dream.
While still in the 11th grade, you should think carefully about what you
really want to take before entering college.
Choosing a course is a complex decision as it determines the type of
profession they intend to pursue in life. As a student trying to choose a
career during secondary school, they face the problem of matching their
career choices with their abilities and school performance.
However, studies indicate that most students enter careers that are
completely different from the ones they chose during secondary school.
One of the important roles of a student is to choose their desired college
course. The K-12 Program emerged to help students who wish to further
hone their knowledge or better recognize their abilities with the help of
this program. The K-12 Program is an additional two years in secondary
school that is intended to better help students discover their potential in
college.
Students who will graduate from Senior High School consider
choosing a college course to be a problem. A student's lack of
enthusiasm and will are the reasons why they cannot achieve their
desired college course (Roderick et al., 2015).
This issue has been a problem for students going to college for a
long time. Because most of them are worried about what course they
want because of future problems.
According to Bautista (2014). Point out that learning is no joke.
Every student should think about the real reason why he is in school. It
is common to hear from parents that education is the only wealth that
can be given to us and that no one else can get it.
"Each student while studying creates a magical key that will open the
door to a good life that is not only reserved for oneself but for the family
of origin, the neighbor, the town". Valledor (2014)
According to The Higher Education Research Institute (2015),
changing courses often occurs because of those who find it difficult to
support studies due to lack of financial money. Among the collected
studies, there is still a large lack of data regarding the perception of
students who did not get the course they wanted in college.
It is important to think carefully and give your decision time in
choosing the course you want to take in college so that the year is not
wasted when you change your mind and heart about the course you are
taking.

B. Theoretical Framework
In Holland's Career Choice theory, six personalities of each
individual were emphasized: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social,
Dense and Gentle. It also states that every individual with the same
personality can create a work environment that fits their choice. It has to
do with choosing a career that fits them. It provides information that tells
us that in choosing a career, people should look for an environment
where they can use their skills and abilities because people who choose
to work in an environment that is similar to their personality type are
more likely to be successful and satisfied.
According to Donald Super's Super Theory, developing a sense of
self and realizing that you change over time is essential to career
planning. It also states that self-concept will change over time as a result
of experience.
In Super Theory, it emphasized the changes that happened in
ourselves over time and realized that it has an important rule or should
be a great help in choosing or planning a career. Unlike other theories
that state various factors affecting career choice, this theory states that
we should be aware of the changes that happen in ourselves from time to
time because it may help us in choosing the said career.

Review Related Literature, Review Related Studies
This chapter presents the articles and statements that support our
research. The literature and studies attached to the research also provide
clearer knowledge whose motive is to increase the knowledge of the
readers.
A. Review Related Studies
This study can help students in choosing the right course for them.
There are also some steps that will help them to know if they are on the
right path to a successful future. It is important to choose the right
course in college because it will be the bridge to your success in life.
When the course you choose is right and it is based on the ability you
have, you will be happy in everything you do, and you will not feel tired.
But you can do all the work that is given to you with full skill.

B. Review Related Literature

According to the article by Laurisa White Reyes (2014) titled
"Motivating the low achieving teen", it is said that young people must
clearly see their goal and they need support from parents and teachers.
There are six methods to motivate struggling students to maintain
performance, they are as follows: (1) Give attention; (2) there will be
communication; (3) Make no excuses; (4) Recognize achievements; (5)
Rejoice in healing; (6) Never give up.
In Daniel Moore's Blog (2013), it is stated that the reason why we
go to college is important no matter what age we are, but the things we
learn about ourselves, and motivation is just as important. Thinking and
changing your determination every time will help you get to the end.
In Tim Tyrell-Smith's blog (2011), it was mentioned that choosing
a career is a price for you. There are options like: (1) You choose a path
that you think is right by a decision that is the best that you have made,
and you know that you will not change your mind in the future.
Choosing a career or course you have to love and like because it
will be your life partner. Notice that as the day goes by something
changes: (1) Need for money; (2) Independence; (3) Life balance. Think
about these ideas and make them your way to choosing the career that
works best for you.
According to Steve Mueller (2010), it was published that students
who are motivated or determined to learn will be easier to complete the
tasks assigned to them. It is also said that students will be more focused
and have concentration if they are determined. Because having a way to
be determined to study is what really helps if you feel procrastination
during your studies.
According to the article by Professor Jae Martin, ED.D. (2009)
titled “Getting and staying motivated” there is only one type of
motivation, and this is self-motivation. Maybe our neighbors can help us
to be motivated in our work, but the truth is that we act for our own
reasons and not because of the reasons of our neighbors.
In the article by Ethan Beh (2009), the five most effective methods
are indicated to increase the learning motivation of any student. These
are as follows: (1) Make records and students at the right time; (2) Start
with the help of the five-minute challenge, in case you really lose the
desire to study, plan to study only for five minutes and plan to stop after
that; (3) Start with the fun part, parts that you can say are interesting will
help to start learning; (4) Eliminate distractions around you, when you
are near the television, cell phone, bed, magazines you may be tempted
to put the books aside first, but it may be left behind if you have to walk
far from your home to watch of television; (5) Have a goal, with its help
we will be more determined to overcome challenges and do our best to
succeed or achieve our goal.
CHAPTER III
METHODOLOGY
This chapter presents the methods used in the study, what
instruments were used to collect the data and describes the steps
involved in the analysis and the compilation of the data collected.

A. Research Design
The conducted research used a descriptive-quantitative design. The
researchers chose the descriptive-quantitative because here the data can
be presented about the factors that affect the choice of a college course.
The researchers believe that the design used and is suitable for the
subject because it will facilitate the data collection being carried out.
Descriptive quantitative is the intellectual aspect behind the methods
used. It provides the basis for why a person uses a particular
methodological stage in the development of research and not others so
that the result of the research can be made by the researcher or another
scholar.

B. Research Location
The past research location was conducted at Saint Mary’s
Academy of Guiuan, Guiuan, Eastern Samar. Due to the revision of the
research paper, the current research location is now 1131 McArthur
Highway, Lucao, Dagupan, Pangasinan.
Figure 2: Here is the location of Kingfisher School of Business and
Finance on google map.
Figure 3: Pictures showing the inside of the school premises.
C. Participants of the Study
The researcher will use total enumeration sampling design.
The previously conducted research task has been held on SMAG has 33
chosen participants to answer the survey. The current number of
participants that has been chosen for the survey are 27 students. The
researcher did not include their genders due to the request of
confidentiality of the students.

D. Collection of Data
Researchers conduct a study about their chosen topic, and
one of these are articles or statements that support their study. After
obtaining the necessary data, it is organized, analyzed and interpreted if
it is related to the topic chosen by the researcher. They presented their
collected data in different parts of their research paper and forwarded it
to the researcher’s previous research teacher, Ms. Jocelyn Eda.
And as of now, the researcher has the final paper on the
previous version of the research, but the recent research that is being
held in Kingfisher School of Business and Finance is still on going. The
researcher is took a step to conduct a pilot survey testing to test if the
previous survey questionnaire is applicable to use. As the result of the
survey, the researcher was able to identify what is the factor that really
affects the Stem 1 students in choosing college course. The pilot testing
was successful so the researcher did not have to conduct a survey again.
The researcher made sure that the answers of the participants in the
survey were confidential. After obtaining the necessary information, the
researchers organized, analyzed and interpreted the collected data.
E. Statistical Analysis
The researchers will use Univariable Analysis. Univariate
analysis examines each variable in a data set, separately. It looks at the
range of values, as well as the central tendency of the values. It describes
the response pattern of the variable. It describes each variable on its
own. Descriptive statistics describe and summarize data.

CHAPTER 4
PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF
DATA
This chapter presents the presentation, and interpretation of
the collected data from the responses of students who are in the eleventh
grade in choosing a college course in the questionnaire distributed by the
researcher from Kingfisher School of Business and Finance to find out if
there is an effect on the factors that affect the choice of college course in
the study of the researcher.

Interpretation of data
The data were thoroughly analyzed and placed in figures and tables
for clear interpretation of the study.
The data is divided into three parts. The first data is about their name
and what they want to take in college. The second data is about the
Financial factor. The third data is about the Parent factor. The fourth
data is the Personal factor.

Respondents' level of Factors affecting College Course Selection

This part answers the level of factors affecting college course
selection. The following table shows their basis for answering the survey
questionnaire of the researchers.

Table 3 contains information about the Factors Affecting in Choosing

College Course of Grade 11 STEM Students of Kingfisher School of
Business and Finance . As shown in the table above, the Self-Influence
received the highest score of 3, interpreted as “Influenced”. This means
that students are aware that Self-Influence is a factor in their college
course selection. On the other hand, the Financial factor received the
lowest score of 2, interpreted as "Somehow Influencedl". This indicates
that students perceive financial factors as less influential in obtaining
their desired course. Additionally, the Parental factor does have an
effect, but not as significant as the Personal factor, hence it is interpreted
as "Less Influential" because it does affect the course selection for the
respondents from Stem 1.

Summary of Findings
The main objective of the study is to identify the factors that affects in
choosing college course of Stem 1 Students of Kingfisher School of
Business and Finance, particularly addressing the following questions:

1. What are the factors affecting in choosing college course of Stem 1 of

Kingfisher School of Business and Finance?
2. How do these factors affecting in choosing college course of Stem 1
of Kingfisher School of Business and Finance?
3. What recommendations can be made based on the study's findings?
The study's respondents are students from Stem 1 of Kingfisher School
of Business and Finance. To determine the students' perceptions of the
factors influencing course selection, respondents were tasked to honestly
answer statements under an survey questionnaire prepared by the
researcher.

nasa itaas, ang Pansarili na Salik ay nakakuha ng 4 na pinakamataas na
sagot, at binibigyang kahulugan na "Lubos na sumasang-ayon". Ibig
binibigyang-kahulugan bilang "Hindi gaanong nakakaapekto".
