CHAPTER 1.0

INTRODUCTION

1.1. Introduction and aim of site supervision

Site supervision is about the career of a site supervisor. On construction sites, oversight
is important in order to avoid accidents. The site supervision guarantees that the project is
overseen by a certified technician who can examine and assist with tasks including planning
and distributing work, making decisions, measuring performance and compliance, giving
leadership and teamwork, and maintaining staff involvement. In other words, site supervision
is necessary to guarantee that the job is carried out in compliance with the contract, preparation,
and techniques. A progress report must also be prepared and submitted to management and
engineers. As a result, supervision is crucial to the achievement of a standard construction
project, particularly in terms of ensuring that health and safety issues are fully addressed.

As is commonly known, site supervision controls the whole building process. As a

result, the site supervisor must guarantee that the materials and workmanship are of high
quality. For example, the site supervisor must guarantee that the items arriving at the project
site are in excellent state, undamaged, and acceptable. It must be properly managed to avoid
direct sunlight, rain, or floods, all of which can damage the quality. Site supervision also should
verify that the material is stored properly so that the employee may finish the task the following
day. To maintain the quality of the work, a safe working environment is also necessary to
prevent accidents. The organization's objective is to maintain safe and healthy working
conditions by creating and enforcing standards and providing training, outreach, education, and
support, as stipulated in the legal system.

This report is about surveying how site supervision is carried out from start to finish.
The objectives of this report are to determine the importance of a site supervision to a building
in order to prevent any problem in construction which can cause accidents, injuries and damage
to materials and building. This study will also define the side effects of construction if there is
no site supervision carried on the site.

1
1.2. Scope of study

The case study was conducted to understand how site supervision is operated in the site
construction of one storey residential house at Gunung Rapat Ipoh, Perak and from the
observation the site is located under city council area. The construction was responsible by NH
Ivory Home and has been overseen by three site supervision to ensure successful work from
start to finish such as development, water supply, wiring and finishes. The site supervisor will
conduct the proses order from suppliers from Hee Seng Hardware Trading and Lean Sin
Hardware located near the site construction which is in Perak area. After that the site
supervisors will handled from the purchase order, delivered, and must count if the items were
enough or not. Then they will make sure there is no defect on the materials and guarantee it
will keep in a right way and right storage. If there is any defect on the materials, site supervision
must make a report and submitted how much it costed to the management. If this matter is
taken lightly, as a result it will have a detrimental effect on the construction as the workers will
use the damaged items for construction. In conclusion, the role of site supervision is very
important to ensure that all construction work runs smoothly and does not cause any unwanted
incidents. In turn causing dissatisfaction to the clients.

1.3. Method of study

Method of study is very important for the best strategies or procedures used to recognize this
scope of study. By doing all this method study, can collect all important data. Below are few
methods of study that has been explored:

1. Interview: Basically interview has been done on site at Persiaran Wira Jaya Barat 50,
Desa Perwira, 31500 Ipoh, Perak Darul Ridzuan. The interview that has been done is
within contractor, client and house properties. Mostly the interview is about the
specification of the project, the material, workmanship. All the specification must
include in agreement and need to followed by the contractor, laboured.

2. Document analysis: Before start the construction, the people in-charge which is site
supervisor must analysis all the documents that provide from clients and house
properties. This is because to avoid the occurrence of inappropriate errors such as
inappropriate materials used, project site location, time allotted etc. So before start build
and complete 1 storey residential houses, the clients, contractor and all people that
include in this project must analysis all the document for example architectural plan.

3. Site visit: During and before start construction people in-charge who responsible to take
care of this project must perform a site visit. This is because before start the
construction, must make sure that the project is suitable at the location of site either
disturb the main road or not and so on. While during the construction, the site supervisor
who responsible on this project must do inspection, to make sure all the items, materials
are sufficient and follow all the specification that required in documents.

4. Internet: Internet is the best platform that as online is the secondary source to find some
knowledge in order to find something that can9t find in books or journal. During this
construction internet help through the suitable material for the house, the best supplier
and etc.

QUALITY OF MATERIALS

3.1. Quality of materials

Quality materials are necessary for quality results; they also give a solid and long-lasting
structure, which goes hand in hand with quality control. Quality building materials function in
tandem with other features of a structure as an investment. The quality measured in several
aspects they are durability, cost efficient, safety and sustainability. Material order conducted
from HQ or officer. All the negotiation, listing, price offer is between supplier and officer.
Officer will manage order and make schedule from the order until receiving process. All the
process is included in Purchase Order (PO) and Delivery Order (DO).

In this case, the SOP the quality material in a single project that practical in site Gunung Rapat
Ipoh using purchase order and delivery order.

3.2. Purchase order

A purchase order is a document given from a buyer to a material supplier or equipment rental
that verifies an order for construction materials. When a purchase order is approved, a formal
contract is formed between the two parties that establishes basic terms such as price, payment
terms, and delivery time. A purchase order may be followed by a written contract that outlines
the connection and agreement's expectations.

6
A well-written purchase order is a delicate balance. On the one hand, it should contain
sufficient detail to ensure that you receive what you requested. POs, on the other hand, should
be straightforward, uniform, and efficient.

1. Listing material:
Material needed will be listed in the form of purchase order. Basically the order will
have made according to the current item or work for example preliminaries. So all the
order is related based on the current phase. All the item will be calculated based on
required amount. Hand in the form to the office for Purchaser uses.

3.3. Delivery order

A delivery order is a document that records the delivery of one or more items by the supplier
to the consignee who is the contractor for the delivery of the material. Suppliers typically place
delivery orders as a reference to the construction manager at the site. Supply orders consist of
location, material specifications, material prices, material quantities, and other details.

1. Location:
The delivery material on site must be exact same as given on the detail during dealing
process.SO the driver or carrier in charge to deliver must obtain the information about
the location from the supplier.

CHAPTER 4.0

QUALITY OF WORKMANSHIP

4.1. Quality of workmanship

Quality of workmanship is alluded to the quality of work conveyed by the contractor to the
client. Great workmanship will be characterizing by the standard which as a rule recount in
agreement by which the manager vow to assemble the construction or a system in a
workmanlike manner. Quality is one of the primary variables in the achievement of excellent
outcome of workmanship. Each course of work done to build the house needs to fulfil the
guideline. Normally, most contractor and managers are pleased with their workmanship,
however they additionally realize things seldom happen how they should. Especially on
enormous or confounded projects. That is where a quality control interaction ought to help and
no quality control cycle would be finished without the right agendas. The purpose of this
inspection is to make visual on-site observations of the workmanship evident in the
construction of a building, which will provide information as to the overall quality of
workmanship utilized in the fabrication of the building, with the most significant irregularities
being pointed out for your consideration. A list of these observed irregularities and suspected
defects will be provided. These observations are made to provide a basis for the opinions which
will be stated in the body of the report.

Based on the case study, few practices are implied on site to focus on the quality of
workmanship.

4.1.1. Master Programme (CPM) and Gantt Chart

CPM is one of the indicator to make sure that the project flow is smooth. Construction
process are always sensitive with time consume. So, the existent of CPM helps to keep track
all of the work progress for the construction on site. This will indicate proper plan and the
project manager will keep on updated of the progresses. After key in the daily data from the
works on site, the diagram will show the flow and help to process the incoming preparation
according to the graph summarize from the daily data collection.

12
The function of creating CPM is it will determine who and how the task can be
completed. the time consume will be calculated according to the situation after analysing the
practicality on site situation. Every detailed process of building a one storey house need to be
listed in the table so that the outcome estimated flow can be created by the chart.

Based on the study, there are few works can be accomplishing faster than the expected
data in the graph. This is because from the data in the table, it is shown that frame installation
may takes up to 4 days but the workers manage to construct them just within 3 days.

Figure 0-1: CPM

Figure 0-2: CPM

13
4.1.2. Briefing session
During this session, the manager should explain the work scope on site to the workers
responsible to build up the one storey house. Starting with the flow of work from planning and
drawing to the constructing on site. The manager is obligated to evaluate the danger and any
type of possibility which may lead to difficulty while building up structure on the ground.
Discussion contain searching and fixing the risk which could cost a fortune and find the best
solution to stay under the budget. The responsibility of the site worker is to ensure they know
how to function on site and have outright comprehension of the association9s principles. The
site supervisor will be responsible to explain the supervision work and guide them for every
process throughout the construction work. Managing to stay wellbeing so everybody knows
the safety measurement and moves to initiate in the event of a setback. It is obligated to
guarantee everybody is aware of this and ought to decide the viability of the control set up.

Figure 0-3: Briefing session

Figure 0-4: Delivered

14
4.1.3. Site inspection and evaluation
This process is an onsite visual observation of evidences of workmanship. It is utilized in
fabrication of the house but not only focusing on the structure of the house. A checklist will be
created to help ease the process of checking all the requirement need to ensure the quality of
the construction structure as it is a necessity to keep track on peoples, material used and
equipment on site. It includes tracking for the process held for the wiring system, water supply,
roof structure and more. This process includes all the aspects that will affect the quality of the
whole structure. For instance, the site supervisor need to fill in the daily report and filed them
in a folder for the office management to check and inspect whether the workers on site followed
the specification. Moreover, if there is any problem occur throughout the process of building,
the workers need to fix the existed issue as soon as possible to ensure the end result will be
excellent without any defect that may be a problem to the client when it was handover.

15

CHAPTER 5.0

CONCLUSION

5.1. Conclusion

At the end of the study, it can be concluding that site supervision will be the most
important part of the construction work. It will show if the supervision on site is excellent then
the outcome will be good too without any defect before proceeding in handing over to the
client. The quality of material and the quality of workmanship will show positivity outcome at
the end result if all the procedure are obeyed on site. The manager and the site supervisor are
responsible to cooperate on project planning to reassure that the project will be completed
properly without any problem. The quality of work on site will help to create a safe and healthy
environment. There are ways such as, creating and enforcing standards and providing training
to the workers so the quality of the outcome will be good. Last but not least, the study here
shows that site supervision at the construction area exposed the importance of preventing any
major problem on construction site if there no site supervision carried on the site it may leads
to accidents, injuries and damage to material and building.
