INTRODUCTION
This chapter is the introduction to the study. It provides information relating to the
research as follows:

1.1 Background of the Study
Language serves as human society's primary means of communication. Speaking can
convey various meanings in different settings. People may use metaphorical language or straight
words with varying meanings to convey their message. Figurative language is language that
employs words or idioms with meanings that deviate from their literal interpretation. Figurative
language enables expression of diverse thoughts and emotions. Effective and elegantly composed
sentences provide readers with concrete descriptions.
Music is an art form that is written and conveyed from the author's thoughts and
emotions. Nowadays, the importance of music has increased over time. For some people, music
is a relaxing and comfortable thing to listen to. Music is meaningful because the lyrics are a
communication between the author and the audience. The lyrics convey information and
emotions, encouraging the audience to have the same feeling.

Moreover, listening to music can help us pronounce words correctly and also teach us
English culture. English music uses English in many cute and profound ways. For example,
many metaphors and symbols we learn in English class may be used. Understanding the
language in music will make it easier for us to understand. For example, learning a formed
language can make us enjoy music more and help us better understand music (Pavarit, 2023).
Music is created by the works of poets, inserting meaning and creating any emotion. We can find
many numerical languages in music.
In this study, I would like to attempt to study the digital language in Ariana's album
"Eternal Sunshine" song. This is one of the topics that interest me, and I chose to do this research
because this artist plays a great role in the artist industry. She is a person who can convey various
musical emotions. Ariana Grande began performing onstage when she was a child. Her
involvement in a Broadway play at age 15, followed by some small TV parts, helped her land the
role of Cat on TV's Victorious. She followed that with the spinoff Sam & Cat and then dove
headfirst into a chart- topping musical career, releasing five albums: Yours Truly (2013), My
Everything (2014), Dangerous Woman (2016), Sweetener (2018) and Thank U, Next (2019)
Positions (2020) and Eternal Sunshine (2024) (Biography.com Editors, 2021).
1.2 Objectives of the Study
1) To analyze in Ariana's album "Eternal Sunshine" song, which is deep in meaning and
symbols used in the song, focus on simile, hyperbole, personification, symbolism, and paradox.
2) To identify the meanings and symbols related to love and sadness in the lyrics.
1.3 Scope of Study
There are 13 songs on Ariana Grande's album “Eternal Sunshine” that were selected to
analyze the meaning of figurative language. The songs on the album were selected as follows:
- intro (end of the world)
- bye
- don't wanna break up again
- Saturn Returns Interlude
- eternal sunshine
- Supernatural
- true story
- the boy is mine
- yes, and?
- we can't be friends (wait for your love)
- i wish i hated you
- imperfect for you
- ordinary things (Ft. Nonna)
The instruments for analysis include ten types of figurative language:
1) Simile 2) Metaphor
3) Hyperbole 4) Personification
5) Irony 6) Assonance
7) Metonymy 8) Paradox
9) Repetition
1.4 Definition of Terms
Figurative language refers to the use of words. Readers cannot only see the words or what
it is written in the text. To have a good interpretation, they have to understand it well. Keraf (as
cited in Sembiring et al., 2020) expressed that the purpose of figure of speech is to explain,
strengthen, arouse, or embellish an object. There by, the usage of figurative language helps to
express thoughts, 12 perceptions, and feelings which are difficult to convey in literal language.
With the help of it, people will understand the intended context better. Not forget to mention,
figurative language appears to be widespread in all language.
