2. 3 - List the fields of study in which a medieval university student could earn a
doctor’s degree.
A student could earn a doctor’s degree in - Law, Medicine, Theology which took about
10 years to accomplish.
The chief events in heroic poems or chanson de geste are usually battles and political
contests. Women had played a small role in a heroic poem.
4. 5 - Analyzing How did the architecture of the Gothic cathedral reflect medieval
religious values.
A Gothic cathedral, unlike its ancestors, had mastered the art of showing or giving off a
message to the person seeing it. The crazy sizes and heights it could level were all for
showing that the higher it is, the closer to God it will be. It had a lot of stained glass,
usually illustrating important moments in the Bible as a reconstruction of what according
to the Bible had happened. Also the arches are pointed up and draw the person’s
attention upward to God he/she/it/self. Also even the pinnacles were as pointed as
people wanted to get closer to God.
5. 6 - Compare what you know of modern university courses of study with those of
the first European universities. What are the similarities and differences?
The similarities between modern and medieval universities are that both medieval and
modern universities are usually working on a very similar pattern - that they both have
4-6 years of study even though nowadays, it is usually up to 5 years. They both
had/have exams, breaks and teachers. The differences on the other hand are, that
nowadays, we have a lot more subjects to choose from and we can specialize in a
specific thing not only in a huge chunk of a subject or just the subject itself. Also
medieval universities were built differently from the modern ones - looking like castles
compared to blocks.
6. 7 - Imagine yourself standing inside a Gothic cathedral shown on page 349. How
would you describe the look and feel of the interior.
I have been in a lot of such cathedrals and I can say that they are usually stunning, with
big amounts of detail and organs at the top which when played, are absolutely beautiful.
They are, even though bright, still dusty and sad with a lot of colors and gold and
diamonds. It is a great place to feel that you are in a holy place where people come with
good intentions and if not, then they should not come in.
