INTRODUCTION
They say that we are what we wear. Posture, hairstyle, clothing and attitude reveal
a lot about us. This non-verbal communication is powerful and tells a story about who we
are, how we relate to others and how we feel about ourselves, and it’s not superficial.
Appearance extends to business as well: It introduces you to the world much before you
reach out with a hand shake and formally introduce yourself. So making just a few
adjustments to your appearance may lead to more and better opportunities. With the topic
“Dressing in Business”, we will take a closer look at the importance of dressing
professionally at work, different types of business attire and the situations they
appropriate for.

CHAPTER 1: DRESSING PROFESSIONALLY AT WORK
1.1. What is dressing professionally
Dressing professionally refers to wearing clothes and accessories designed for a
professional workplace. The standard of professional dress can vary depending on the
industry, company culture, and specific job requirements. Generally, professional
dressing means clothes that are neat, conservative, and not too flashy or casual. For men,
this might include a suit, dress shirt, and tie, or smart slacks with a formal shirt. For
women, it could be a business suit, dress with a blazer, or a tailored skirt and blouse. The
key is to present oneself in a manner that conveys respect for the job, colleagues, and the
business setting.
1.2. The Importance of Dressing Professionally at Work
Here's an in-depth look at the multitude of compelling reasons underscoring the
significance of maintaining a professional dress code in your workplace, and why it plays
a pivotal role:
First of all, dressing professionally at work makes a good first impression
Your outward appearance often sets the stage for how others perceive you.
Adopting a professional dress code not only shapes a favorable first impression among
colleagues and superiors in the workplace but is particularly crucial during pivotal
moments like interviews or meetings with high-level executives. These occasions can
significantly impact hiring and promotion prospects. The early impressions others form
about you can be enduring, influencing their perceptions and interactions with you over
the long term. As such, curating your wardrobe to reflect professionalism is not just about
clothing choices; it's about strategically crafting your personal brand and setting the tone
for your professional journey.
Secondly, dressing well communicates that you take your job seriously
Adorning oneself in professional attire is more than just a choice of clothing; it's a
silent yet powerful declaration of your commitment and passion for your career. It's like
painting a canvas of dedication and care, each brushstroke representing the time and
6
effort you invest in crafting your appearance. This sartorial diligence not only mirrors
your respect for yourself and your role but also serves as a beacon, signaling to
colleagues and superiors alike that you're a figure of professionalism worthy of
admiration and consideration. In a world where first impressions often speak volumes,
your choice to dress professionally is a strategic move in shaping how you are perceived
and valued in the workplace.
In addition to this, wearing professional attire represents your company
As a member of your organization, you serve as a representative of the company to
the public. Whether you're making service calls, visiting clients or speaking with
customers in a store, your appearance reflects on the business. Dressing professionally
helps you present a positive, professional image of your organization to others.Even if
you dress casually or wear a uniform, making sure you look neat and put together can
improve the reception you receive. Employers appreciate employees who consider
themselves as company ambassadors to the public.
Moreover, dressing in formal business attire gives you confidence
Achieving your utmost potential is closely tied to feeling your best. Embracing
professional attire can be a significant step towards feeling empowered and self-assured,
equipping you to tackle new challenges, forge connections, and advance in your
professional journey. While various aspects of your career might not always be within
your grasp, your presentation is a facet you can masterfully control and leverage to your
benefit. The image you craft is an extension of your personal brand, silently but
effectively conveying your essence to those who may not yet have the chance to engage
with you directly. It's about constructing a professional wardrobe that resonates with your
ambitions, reflects your individuality, and showcases your creative flair.
Apart from this, you feel part of the team when you dress for work
The ability to collaborate effectively is a key ingredient for success in various
professional settings. Adopting a professional dress code can enhance your sense of
belonging among peers and superiors, reinforcing your confidence in bringing valuable
insights and ideas to the table. Presenting yourself in a professional manner can also
7
encourage your colleagues to view you as a dedicated team player, increasing the
likelihood of your involvement in critical conversations and significant projects.
Last but not least, dressing professionally can enhance your credibility
Donning a professional attire acts like a key, unlocking a realm of positive
perceptions and richer interactions. When you step into your workplace arrayed in
professional garb, you wrap yourself in a cloak of credibility. This sartorial choice
weaves an aura of trust and respect around you, influencing how colleagues, superiors,
clients, and even the wider public engage with you. It's as if your outfit speaks before you
do, laying a foundation of confidence and esteem in every conversation and encounter.
1.3. Benefits of having a dress code at work
Establishe A Professional Image
A dress code in the workplace serves multiple purposes, contributing to a
professional environment in various ways. Firstly, it establishes a professional image,
which is crucial for making positive impressions on clients, partners, and stakeholders.
By adhering to a dress code, employees demonstrate respect for both clients and the work
environment, thus enhancing the company's reputation and fostering a professional
corporate culture..
Enhance Brand Identity
A consistent dress code can act as a visual representation of the company's
brand. It facilitates easy identification of company employees, creates uniformity, and
effectively promotes the company's brand, thus reinforcing its image in the market.
Safety and Security
In some workplaces, dress codes are essential to ensure employee safety. Safety
and security considerations are also addressed through dress codes in certain workplaces.
By minimizing the risk of accidents and injuries and protecting employees from
hazardous elements, dress codes ensure the well-being and security of both employees
and the company.
Focus and Productivity
8
Dress codes can help reduce distractions in the office. By establishing clear
guidelines for attire, there's less attention on what people are wearing and more focus on
getting work done. Additionally, dress codes contribute to improving focus and
productivity by reducing distractions caused by inappropriate attire. Clear guidelines
enable employees to concentrate on their work, enhancing overall productivity and
efficiency.
Equality and Team Spirit:
Dress codes help promote equality and team’s spirit at workplace by creating an
equal work environment for employees, eliminating discrimination based on appearance,
and fostering camaraderie among employees.
Confidence and Morale
Feeling well-dressed not only enhances confidence and professionalism but also
boosts morale and increases employee satisfaction. This, in turn, positively impacts
overall workplace culture and productivity.
Cost Savings
From a financial perspective, dress codes can lead to cost savings for employees
by saving time and money on choosing clothes and minimizing the need for expensive
attire purchases.
Compliance with Industry Standards
Moreover, adherence to industry standards regarding attire ensures employees
comply with industry regulations, avoids legal violations and risks and further enhances
the company's reputation and standing within the industry.
In addition to these benefits, implementing a dress code can create a competitive
advantage, attract and retain talent, and minimize workplace attire disputes, thus
contributing to a harmonious and successful work environment.

CHAPTER 2: HOW TO DRESS PROFICIENTLY AT
WORK
2.1. Dress code types:
Currently, there are two main types of dress codes used in offices: Uniforms and
Casual attire.
Uniform Dress Code
Companies that have a uniform dress code are usually those involved in
manufacturing, services, industry, construction, or state-owned corporations. They often
require employees to wear standardized uniforms according to the company's regulations.
The uniforms usually have the same style of shirt with the company's logo or slogan
printed on it, and are designed and tailored in bulk by companies or factories specializing
in office uniforms.
Many companies choose to have a uniform dress code because it creates a strong
image and identity for the business, helps convey messages and promote the brand most
effectively. The advantages of this type of dress code are that it creates uniformity and
professionalism for the company, saves time choosing clothes every day, shows team
spirit, and reduces class and status discrimination in the company.
However, choosing a uniform dress code is often not suitable for environments
that require high creativity, and can be uncomfortable for some people.
Casual Dress Code
Not only uniforms, but also casual attire can be considered office dress code. This
is the type of dress code that is often applied by many companies today. Employees are
free to choose their work clothes based on the following criteria: neat, clean, and polite.
Some organizations require that male employees do not wear sandals or that female
employees do not wear skirts above 15cm above the knee, but otherwise their employees
are free to dress. Instead of requiring uniforms all week, many companies and businesses
choose casual dress. Moreover, with the traditional style of many companies in Vietnam,
10
the choice of office clothes is not open and even some companies do not care much about
this. This can easily bore employees.
The advantage of this type of dress code is that it is suitable for jobs that require
high creativity, helps to express the individuality and style of each person, and create
comfort and confidence for the wearer. Besides, the level of formality of the clothes you
wear to work also depends on the company and your position in the job. Superiors such
as the company's president or CEO need to dress more formally and have higher dress
requirements than new employees. They are often not allowed to dress casually or
comfortably because they may have to meet clients at any time.
2.2. Tips for dressing professionally
Recognize the dress code at work
All offices have a dress code, so it's critical to know what it is. While some offices
demand formal wear, others are more laid back. Before you start dressing for work, be
sure you understand what is expected of you.
Asset yourself for the part
You might have to dress more professionally than other workers if you have a
leadership position. Similarly, you might need to dress more formally than usual if you're
presenting a presentation or meeting with clients.
Make quality purchases
Having a small number of well-fitting, high-quality clothing is preferable to a
closet full of misfitting items. Make a few crucial purchases, such as a smart suit, elegant
shoes, and a few tops that seem put together for men.
Maintain your clothes ironed and clean
This shows your personality, as a thoughtful and careful person. A poorly ironed
or dirty outfit may make even the most professional look sloppy. So that, take your time
and take good care of your clothing before going out.
Remember to include accessories
11
Accessories may give your ensemble a polished look. Think about making an
investment in some basic jewelry and a professional bag for women as well as adding a
tie and a watch to your suit for men.
Verify the company's policies regarding body jewelry and tattoos
Certain places of employment have rules about visible piercings or tattoos. If your
workplace requires tattoos not to be visible, you have to choose clothes that cover them.
Be award of these rules and modify your wardrobe accordingly.
Plan Appropriately for Events
Take into account the setting of meetings or events to choose the outfits
appropriating to the occasion. For formal events like client meetings or presentations,
dress more appropriately and respecfully.
2.3. Business dressing mistakes to avoid
Dressing too casually
Professional attire is usually what is meant by business wear. Steer clear of casual
attire such as sneakers, t-shirts, and jeans.
Ignoring grooming
Bad grooming can ruin even the finest ensemble. Make sure your nails are clean
and short, your hair is well-groomed, and any facial hair is well-trimmed.
Donning ill-fitting clothing
Excessively tight or baggy clothing might make one appear unprofessional. It's
crucial to dress in clothing that fits properly.
Excessive use of perfume or cologne
Although it's crucial to smell well, wearing excessive amounts of these items can
come across as unprofessional in a professional environment.
Not the right footwear
Shoes can elevate or detract from an ensemble. It is normally recommended to
stick to traditional styles in neutral colors when attending a corporate setting.
Excessive or improper jewelry
12
Wearing excessive or inappropriate jewelry might take away from your
professional appearance, even though some jewelry can improve it.
Not wearing in accordance with the company culture
It's critical to comprehend the dress code and culture of the organization. From one
company to another, there can be significant differences in what is deemed suitable.
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, each different environment will have different characteristics of
clothing. Compares, agencies or organizations often have uniforms that are worn on a
daily basis or on special occasions, but in addition, people can still have their own unique
outfits, suitable for each person’s style. Dressing professionally for business matters
portrays a positive image, instills confidence, and creates a good first impression. It
demonstrates respect for your colleagues, clients, and the company you represent. By
following these tips and understanding the specific dress code of your workplace or
situation, you can ensure you're appropriately attired for success. Remember, professional
attire doesn't have to be stuffy or uncomfortable. There's plenty of room for personal style
within the boundaries of professionalism. So go forth, dress with confidence, and conquer
the business world.
