The Fifth District includes the cities of Albany, Berkeley, Emeryville, Piedmont, and West Oakland, North Oakland, Rockridge, Grand Lake, and portions of the Fruitvale, Manzanita and Dimond District neighborhoods.

Dear District 5 Resident, As your representative on the Alameda County Board of Supervisors, I am dedicated to communicating relevant news and information that will benefit individuals and the community. This is the inaugural edition of our Quick Bits news and updates, a bi-weekly compilation of news and announcements. I hope you will find it informative! Yours Truly, Supervisor Keith Carson LOCAL NEWS The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recently announced awards for Health Care Workforce Training Grants to train nurses and geriatric specialists and to improve the performance and recruitment of underrepresented minority students. Congratulations to these institutions in District 5 that received grants to train nurses. Read more. COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT Local Artist Mario Chiodos Monument will Commemorate 25 Champions for HumanityLocal sculptor Mario Chiodo is undertaking a project to create a larger than life bronze monument representing 25 humanitarians from around the world. The work will be installed in Oakland's vibrant Uptown arts neighborhood, near the Fox Theater. The MLK Institute at Stanford University has developed an accompanying curriculum for high school students and available on their website. Piedmont Nonprofit Helps College Students with Serious IllnessesThe Orion Fund was established in 2004 to honor Piedmont High graduate and UCSD student Orion Trott, who died of brain cancer at age 22. The nonprofit, run by a group of mothers, puts on fundraisers and disburses grants to help other college students facing serious health challenges. Click here to learn more. Save the Date! East Bay Economic Development Alliance 20th Anniversary Celebration Friday December 3, 2010, 5:30-8 pm Location in Jack London Square TBA STATE NEWS Term Limits for State Legislators Shift Balance of Power to Special InterestsA special report by the Mercury News details the unintended consequences of strict terms limits in the State Legislature. A series of articles details how inexperienced lawmakers become reliant on lobbyists who craft legislation and sponsor bills that benefit corporate interests. Research revealed that bill sponsors are also significant contributors to the re-election campaigns of the legislators who carry their bills. FEDERAL NEWS The Gray Panthers Respond to Proposed Changes in Social SecurityIn response to proposals to raise the age for persons eligible for Social Security from 65 to 70, Joan Wile of the Gray Panthers explains how these changes would hurt seniors with limited incomes, especially women. Instead, Wile argues for the elimination of the annual cap on taxable income (now at $106,800) and a reduction in spending on the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. To read the whole article, click here. Health Center New Access Point Grants--The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has announced the availability of up to $250 million in grants for New Access Points for the delivery of primary health care services for underserved and vulnerable populations under the Health Center Program. A new access point is a new full-time service delivery site that provides comprehensive primary and preventive health care services. Organizations eligible to compete include public or nonprofit private entities, including tribal, faith-based and community-based organizations who meet health center funding requirements.
