Geographical Location
1. National Dances
Tinikling is a traditional Philippine folk dance which originated during the Spanish
colonial era. The dance involves at least two people beating, tapping, and sliding
bamboo poles on the ground and against each other in coordination with one or
more dancers who step over and in between the poles in a dance. It represents
many of the values that are important to the Philippines like nature and life. Some
also say that tinikling represents most of the Filipinos main character traits such
as resilience and fun-loving.
2. Local/Regional Dances
Pantomina- this is performed during wedding in Bicol region.
Nature
1. Occupational Dances
Managat which originated from Bogo, Cebu. This dance imitates the work of a
fisherman and his companions. Maria Neis a native of Bogo taught the dance to
her friends in Flihan, a barrio of Fabogon, near Bogo.
2. Religious/Ceremonial Dance
Dugso- a ceremonial dance among the Manobo people in the Bukidnon, Agusan
and Misamis Oriental. Usually performed during important occasion like kaliga
(feast) or kaaluman (tribal gatherings). As a form of thanksgiving for good
harvest, healing of the sick and for the community's overall well being, It is also
used to get rid of bad spirits, to give luck for victory in battle and used during the
blessing of the newly opened field.
3. Courtship Dance
Kuratsa- is a dance of flirtation and courtship, designed to be danced with a
partner. Its movements mimic the mating ritual of a rooster and hen. Alcedo said
that different versions of the dance could be found in north and central
Philippines.
4. Wedding Dance
Pangalay- colorful and elaborate dance performed in some Filipino-Muslim
weddings, and the Salidsid (pictured), a playful courtship dance by the Kalinga
people of the Northern Philippines.
5. Festival Dance
Ibalong Festival- aims to express warmth and goodwill to all people; visitors and
tourists are encouraged to celebrate with the Bicolanos. The Ibalong Festival is
also known as the Ibalon Waterfalls.
6. War Dance
Sagayan- is a Philippine war dance performed by Maguindanao, Maranao and
Iranun depicting in dramatic fashion the steps their hero, Prince Bantugan, took
upon wearing his armaments, the war he fought in and his subsequent victory
afterwards.
7. Comic Dance
Kinoton- is a comic dance from Ilocos Sur. It depicts a movement by a person
bitten by ants.
8. Game Dance
Pukol is a playful game-type dance in which the performers carry coconut shells
in their hands which they beat together rhythmically. The dance comes from the
island of Panay and is often associated with bathing in a river or at the sea.
9. Social Dance
Philippine Tango was developed from the American Style and it is Characterized
by Fast and Slow Walking Step.
5 Classification
1. Cordillera/Upland
Canao or Kanyaw is a festival or a ceremony of the indigenous mountain people
of Northern Luzon in the Philippines. It is a socio-religious ritual. Where chickens,
pigs and/or carabaos are butchered as a sacrifice and feasted on. This is usually
a thanksgiving to their god Kabunyan.
2. Spanish Influence/ Maria Clara Suite
The Cariñosa originated in Panay Island and was introduced by the Spaniards
during their colonization of the Philippines. It is related to some of the Spanish
dances like the bolero and the Mexican dance jarabe tapatio or the Mexican hat
dance.
3. Muslim
Singkil is a folk dance of the Philippines that has its origins in the Maranao
people of Lake Lanao, a Mindanao Muslim ethnolinguistic group. The dance is
widely recognized today as the royal dance of a prince and a princess weaving in
and out of crisscrossed bamboo poles clapped in syncopated rhythm.
4. Tribal
Dugso is a ceremonial dance among the Manobo people in Bukidnon, Agusan
and Misamis Oriental .The Dugso id usually performed during important
occasions like kaliga or kaamulan a tribal gatherings.
5. Rural
Salakot- The dance's origin in folk music and art makes it a treasured custom in
the countryside regions as well as in modern cities. The salakot symbolizes
Filipino identity and is often depicted in the costume of the Juan dela Cruz, the
national personification of the Philippines.
