What’s In
In NOS, administrator can control the different setting such as N/W security
protocol, data backup for single and interconnected computer system. It contains
all possible security features of operating system. Users can manage all remote
terminals.

What’s New
The composition of hardware that
typically uses a NOS includes several
personal computers, a printer, a server,
and file server with a local network that
connects them together. The role of the
NOS is to then provide basic network
services and features that support
multiple input requests simultaneously
in a multiuser environment. Due to
earlier versions of basic operating
systems not being designed for network use, network operating systems emerged as
a solution for single-user computers.

What is It
Network Operating System (NOS)
It is a computer operating system (OS) that is designed primarily to support
workstations, personal computers and, in some instances, older terminals that are
connected on a local area network (LAN). It is also like as software that is installed
on the server side on the network infrastructure. Network operating system provides

the several functionalities for managing the data, applications, security, and other
functions.

Types of network operating systems

There are two basic types of network operating systems, the peer-to-peer NOS, and
the client/server NOS:

1. Peer to Peer NOS

Peer to Peer network operating system is designed
especially for small to medial type local area networks. In
Peer-to-Peer NOS, all users can share resources and any
type of data (file) on their workstation computer system,
and these shared resources can be accessed by other
computer system. In this network operating system, all
computer systems contain equal privileges for consuming
all resources which are presented on the network.

2. Client-Server NOS

Client/server network operating system provides the

several functions and applications on the center hub,
and this center hub is known as “Dedicated File
Server”. Now client workstation can access all
resources which are existed on the network. Multiple
users are capable to share equal resources on the
network operating system from different location at a
same time.

Common features of network operating systems

Features of network operating systems are typically associated with user
administration, system maintenance and resource management functionality. This
includes:

• Basic support for operating systems like protocol and processor support,
hardware detection and multiprocessing.
• Printer and application sharing.
• Common file system and database sharing.
• Network security capabilities such as user authentication and access control.
• Directory
• Backup and web services.
• Internetworking.

Examples of network operating systems

The network operating systems are categorized as software that enhances the
functionality of operating systems by providing added network features. A few
examples of these network operating systems and their service providers are:

4
City of Good Character
DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE
• Artisoft’s LANtastic- This is a simple, user-friendly NOS that supports most
PC operating systems.
• Banyan’s VINES- This uses a client-server architecture to request specific
functions and services.
• Novell’s NetWare- This was the first network operating system to be released
and is designed based on XNS protocol architecture.
• Microsoft’s LAN Manager- This operates as a server application and was
developed to run under the Microsoft OS. Now, most of the functionality of
LAN Manager is included in the Windows OS itself.

In addition, some multi-purpose operating systems, such as Windows NT and

Digital's OpenVMS come with capabilities that enable them to be described as a
network operating system. Further, the most popular operating systems like
Windows, Unix, Linux, and Mac include built-in networking functions that may not
require additional network services.

Components of network operating system

There are two types of components such as:

1. Hardware Components

There are some devices which are physically connected with each other.

• Server M/C
• Client M/C
• Peer M/C
• Communication medium – Guided media – coaxial cable, fiber optic cables.
• Unguided media – microwaves, infra-red waves
• Connecting Terminals – Routers, Bridges, Hubs, Repeaters, Gateways,
Switches, hub, Network Interface Card, Shared printers.

2. Software Components

These are some programs which are installed on the network machines.

• Networking Operating System – Unix, Linux, Windows 2000, Windows 98,

Windows XP.
• Protocol Suite – OSI Model (Open System Interconnections), TCP / IP Model

Advantages of network operating system

• Server provides the best protection.
• Easy hardware’s configuration.
• It is more specialized to H/W and operating system.
• All terminals can easily access to server from several different areas.
• Dedicated file server has better stability.

5
City of Good Character
DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE
Disadvantages of network operating system
• It does not contain the any center storage space.
• It is not more protected system.
• Need regular services and updates as per requirement.
• It totally depends upon the center server for all types of operations such as
storage and accessing data.
• It is more expensive.

1. Why do we need to know about computer operating system?the computer is the operating system.
It controls the memory and processes of the computer, as well as all of its software and hardware.
2. Based on the short video, what are the difference between wired network and
wireless network? A wired network uses cables to connect devices, such as laptop or desktop computers, to the Internet or
another network. A wireless network allows devices to stay connected to the network but roam untethered to any wires.
3. What are the components of networking and its function?
Hardware components refer to the physical, tangible computer equipment and devices, which provide
support for major functions such as input, processing (internal storage, computation, and control), output,
secondary storage (for data and programs), and communication.

Software components are a set of instructions, stored digitally within the computer's memory, which tells
the computer system what to do. Software components of a computer system have no physical presence,
they are stored in digital form within a computer memory.

What’s In

The ability to share information and resources is a vital part of information

technology. A peer-to-peer (P2P) network could help your study more efficiently by
improving connectivity and access to shared resources. Each device in the network
is a peer with functions that contribute to the network. Each device in a P2P network
shares a part of its resources with other networked computers. These resources can
include storage, bandwidth, and processing power.

What’s New

A peer-to-peer network has no special server for authenticating users. Each

computer manages its own security, so a separate user account might need to be
created for each computer that a user needs to access. Users usually store files on
their own computers and are responsible for ensuring that those files are
appropriately backed up. In a peer-to-peer network, each computer typically runs
both client and server software and can be used to make resources available to other
users or to access shared resources on the network.

What is It
Peer to Peer (P2P) Network
It is a network in which the computers are managed independently of one another
and have equal rights for initiating communication with each other, sharing
resources, and validating users.

9
City of Good Character
DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE
A P2P network is different from the client-server network that people have
traditionally used in networking. A client-server network is a connection between a
client computer and a server computer to provide the client with resources. In this
network type, the client does not contribute resources to the network.

Some major features of this network include:

• Each device in a P2P network gives resources to the network and consumes
resources that the network provides.

• In a P2P network, files are shared between the different computers.

• Being a part of a P2P network enables sharing equipment such as printers

between the various devices in the network.

• The setup of a peer-to-peer network requires specialized software.

• Some P2P networks are formed by overlaying a virtual network on a physical

network. The network uses the physical connection to transfer data while the
virtual overlay allows the computers on the network to communicate with each
other.

Hardware You Will Need

1. At least two computers.

2. Network adapters for each computer.
3. If you have 10Base-T adapters, and only two computers, you can directly
connect one computer to the other with a crossover cable.
4. If you have 10Base-T adapters and more than two computers, you will need a
10Base-T hub to connect them.
Setting Up a Peer-to-Peer Network
For wired networks, it requires only the following:

10
City of Good Character
DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE
• Each computer must have a network interface card (NIC), such as an
internal network adapter, a USB network adapter, a motherboard-
based network chip, or a network PC Card.
• You must have an external router or switch.
• You must activate Dynamic Host Control Protocol (DHCP) on the router.
DHCP automatically assigns unique IP addresses to each computer on
the network.
• Each computer must have a network cable running from the NIC to a
port in the router (or switch).
• If you have a high-speed modem, you must run a network cable from
the Internet (or WAN) port in the router to the network port in the
modem. This ensures that every computer on the network can share
the Internet connection.
• Each computer must have a unique name.
• Each computer must use the same workgroup name.

Basic Steps to Peer-to-peer Network – File sharing

1. For the PC 1, go to the Open Network and sharing Center, then click
ethernet/local area connection.
