1. Determine the force in cylinder AB due to the combined weight of the bucket and operator in Figure 1.
The combined mass is 180 kg with mass centre at G. (8 Marks)
2. The power unit of the post-hole digger shown in Figure 2 supplies a torque of 4000 N-m to the auger.
The arm B is free to slide in the supporting sleeve C but is not free to rotate about the horizontal axis of
C. If the unit if free to swivel about the vertical axis of the mount D, determine the force exerted against
the right rear wheel by the block A (or A’), which prevents the unbraced truck from rolling. (Hint: view
the system from above.) ( 8
Marks)
3. Determine the force in members CE, CD and CB of the truss shown in Figure 3. (8 Marks)

4. Two collars A and B, each of weight W (Figure 4) are connected by a cord which passes over a
frictionless pulley at C. Determine the smallest value of coefficient of friction (µ) between the collars and
the vertical rods for which the system will remain in equilibrium in the position shown. (8 Marks)
5. An exploration device, which unfolds from the body A of an unmanned space vehicle resting on the
moon’s surface, consists of a spring-loaded pantograph with detector head B as shown in Figure 5. It is
desired to select a spring that will limit the vertical contact force P to 100 N in the position for which 𝜽 =
120o. If the mass of the arms and head is negligible, specify the necessary spring stiffness k. The spring is
uncompressed when 𝜽 = 30o. (8 Marks)
6. Determine the natural frequency in Hz of the system shown in Figure 6 for small amplitude of
motion about the static equilibrium configuration. Neglect the mass of the rigid bar ABCD. Take K = 25
N/m, m = 2 kg, L = 2 m. ( 9
Marks)
