MY REFLECTION ON THE MOVIE “PK”
“Doubt everything,” Mr. Rene Descartes said. At first my stand on religion is very
firm. I trust everything that my parents, pastors and priests utters about our religion.
That was when I was still a child, my knowledge and my curiosity about religion are
few. But as I grow older, as I gain more information from the world around me my
perception and opinions about things like religion had changed. I don’t mean that
because of the new things I learned I had a change of heart. No, I didn’t.

While watching the movie PK, at first I thought what’s the big deal with this movie.
Because during the first scenes of the movie. Looks like that of a typical comedy
movie, where the movie only aims to make the audience laugh. During the first
quarter of the movie nothing really happened much, nothing piqued my attention yet.
I find the first quarter of the movie to be corny. But it’s just my me, because I am not
really a fan of Bollywood movies. Although I watched and loved some, I find it quite
hard to accept their style. But I was surprised because in some scenes as it showed
the grey area of the media. They showed how far the media would go just to make
story to report. But as it may look bad, actually it is, they have no choice but to do it,
because it’s what supports their entire industry. It’s what fed the families of their
workers, if they have no story to report then they are not doing their job. In theory
there are many stories to report, but not all are worthy of being reported. In addition,
not all stories are going to be accepted by the audience. Because often times the
very bad side of everyone which they are trying to hide are the ones the media likes
to mess around with. If the people who are hiding something from the public are very
powerful and influential, they are able to suppress the media who are trying to
uncover their secrets. This makes the media a useless tool, a dull blade, a tool that
can’t perform their task. The truth which the media sworn to protect would be stained
by lies.

Moving on, the second quarter of the movie started to become interesting for me.
When the main character PK started to gain more camera exposure. Pk is an alien, a
complete stranger to our world, yet he was able to adapt very quickly. The movie
showed many un ethical behaviours of us human beings. Like, in the beginning of
the movie the act of stealing is depicted. Where, the main character’s remote
controller t for his spaceship was stolen from him. Next is “the dancing car” where
Pk gets most of his clothes. It referred to the act of having sex while in public. During
this part of the movie I started to get interested, because of the hidden ideas
incorporated in the scenes of the movie. As Pk look for his remote controller, he asks
a lot of people if they know where it was. Every time he asks, people would take his
explanations as a joke. This showed the doubtful nature of humans. Although it is not
all that bad to doubt, but sometimes all we do is doubt. We don’t believe, even if it’s
the truth. Instead we turn it into humour, when we don’t understand certain things
and we can’t determine if it’s true, we turn it into humour. That’s why when Pk asks
people if they know where his remote controller is, people would just laugh at him.
Personally I don’t think of humour being bad in nature.
Because humour is just another form of entertainment. Humour helps us reduce our
stress and could even resolve small conflicts. But the improper use of humour could
lead to misunderstandings and could also fuel conflicts.

When Pk asks people where would his remote controller be, their answers are all the
same, “maybe god know where it is.” Not knowing anything about religion Pk
believed that this god actually exists physically. So he started looking for God to ask
him for help. During his search he saw many Gods, these gods have different
requirements for their followers. Pk asked every God’s help, but he still can’t find his
remote controller. Nor could he speak to the gods personally himself. Because Pk
lacks knowledge on religion, he missed that fact that religion is mainly based on
faith. Due to this lack of knowledge he thought of the idea that the gods don’t actually
receives our pleads, the “wrong number idea.” He thought that some other gods are
messing with us. This raised a good question. Does God receive our pleads? For
me, I think that he does. But then, why does not all please are answered by God?
The obvious answer would be because some pleads are meant to harm and it’s
against God’s nature to do bad. Why do some pleads that are good not answered?
For me they are answered, but people don’t just see it. Because God doesn’t use
conventional means for his responses. The movie also showed how people use
religion to gain power and influence. Like the topic of cash donations. Cash
donations are not inherently bad, but they can be taken advantage of which leads to
the more religious form of tax. Taxation which are not regulated are bad because it
takes away too much money from the people which doesn’t even benefit them.

The movie showed that indeed there is a God, but there is only one God. It showed
that the gods of different religions are just mere duplicate of the original. This makes
sense because some Gods are biased, loving some group of people more than
others. I personally agree with the point of view of the protagonist, that religious
distinctions are very dangerous. Because it causes divisions among us, and those
divided group of people could have a conflict with another if ever one meddles with
the other. Those divisions limits our capabilities as a whole, we could achieve more
than what we could ever achieve as a small group if we combined and cooperated
with other people. The topic of believing in God gives us hope, I also agree with.
Because personally I have relied on God during hopeless times of my life. The
question, what is the right number? Which could also pertain to which religion is
correct? Is the big question yet to be answered. This question became stuck in my
head as I watched the remaining scenes of the movie. As the movie ended, I am still
pondering on that same question now and haven’t came up with an answer yet.
Because I think only the God himself could answer such a question.
