GED109 / A21 Film Analysis

Transamerica

1. Who is the main character in the film? Give the following details:

1.1 Name

The main character in the film is Stanley Schupak, and later, his name changed
to Sabrina Claire Osbourne.

1.2 Age;

Based on the film, her age is not indicated but since the movie happened in the
2000s, her age is probably around in the 30s and 40s.

1.3 Gender;

The main character is a transwoman.

1.4 Civil Status; and

In the film, she lives alone and is still unmarried.

1.5 Occupation.

She has two jobs; one is working on advertising sales as a telemarketer and a
dishwasher in a restaurant.

2. Describe the main character in the film. What are the gender roles that she
portray? How does she cope with the norms of the society? How does she
handle stress? How does she behave?

She portrays herself as a woman, but her portrayal is described as laying low in
society. She conforms to societal norms, particularly those gender expectations
of being a woman. There have been times when she has felt stressed, such as
when a child asked her if she is a boy or a girl or when her son is out of control;
she seeks out her psychologist and expresses her feelings. She is very
emotional about it, and I believe her psychologist was extremely helpful to her.

3. The main character, was at first, not allowed by her psychologist to

undergo the surgery. What was the reason? Explain this thoroughly.

The psychologist stated that she does not want Bree to feel incomplete. It is due
to Bree discovering she has a son. The psychologist does not wish Bree to feel
bad about her decision to undergo sexual reassignment. I believe the
psychologist adheres to the principle of saying that once a child is born, your
perspective on the world changes.

4. How did she react after finding out that she has a son? Did this influence
her decision to undergo the operation? Explain.

At first, she is unaware that she is the father of a boy. Her son, she believes, is a
con artist. She did not reconsider her decision to undergo sexual reassignment
after learning about her son.

5. Describe her son in terms of behavior. Explain his behaviors based on his
experiences and by using some gender theories that you learned in our
class. What do you think are the factors that contributed to the gender
issues of his son? Elaborate.

Some people in society may regard his son's behavior as wild. Some examples
include making out with a stranger in public, using illegal drugs, and working as a
prostitute. His actions result from childhood trauma, but they could also be the
result of his stepfather's dislike for him. His son was not receiving any support
from his family, which I believe is one of the reasons he is behaving in this
manner.

6. What are the reactions of the significant people in the main character's life
when they found out that she's going to have an operation? Did their
reactions and opinions influence the main character's decision? Explain.
Some of them supported the surgery, while others, such as her mother, did not.
Their reactions only exacerbated Bree's mental state, but this did not affect her
decision to have the surgery. Her sister Sydney, as well as her father, did not
object to her decision. Only her mother was adamantly opposed to her decision.

7. Do you think gender reassignment should be legalized here in the

Philippines? Explain your answer by presenting factual pros and cons of
this matter (laws and other scientific facts).
In my opinion, it should be made legal. Our society in the Philippines is
predominantly conservative, and gender is typically defined as the given sex. If
gender reassignment becomes legal, I believe the argument that a man is
considered a male because he has a penis will no longer be valid. It is only
suitable to make everyone happy. I believe that legalizing gender reassignment
benefits the LGBTQ+ community.

8. What are your three (3) learning insights after learning all about gender
reassignment and watching the film? Start your statement by saying
'Before learning all about gender reassignment and before watching the
film, I used to think that (insert thought). After learning all about
gender reassignment and after watching the film, I now think that (insert
thought).

Before learning all about gender reassignment and before watching the film, I
used to think that gender reassignment is a desire in some humans. After
learning all about gender reassignment and after watching the film, I now believe
that gender reassignment does help many people who struggle with their given
sex, particularly on a mental level.

Before learning all about gender reassignment and before watching the film, I
used to think that you could have gender reassignment surgery right away. After
learning all about gender reassignment and after watching the film, I now think
that you should seek the approval of a psychiatrist before undergoing surgery to
ensure that you will not have any second thoughts because someone cannot
reverse them.

Before learning all about gender reassignment and before watching the film, I
used to think that people who undergo gender reassignment surgery only have
body issues because they feel trapped in their bodies. After learning all about
gender reassignment and watching the film, I now think that people undergoing
gender reassignment should also consider their mental health because
undergoing that surgery requires someone to be in a healthy mental state.
