Materials
-any Worsted/Medium weight yarn 130-150-180-200yds -I used: Bernat Premium et Super Saver
Retro stripes. Other yarns: Red Heart with Love, Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice, Craft Smart Value.
- H8/5mm crochet hook, or the appropriate crochet hook for your yarn – to obtain the gauge –
- faux fur Pom Pom and a pin or a safety pin.
Gauge: 14HDC/4”
Legend:
St-Stitch / R-round / YO-yarn over / RS/WS– right side/wrong side/ SC-Single Crochet
HDC- Half Double Crochet / HDC2tog =HDC decrease : [YO, insert hook in next st, YO and pull up loop]x
2 times, you have 5 loops on hook. YO hook, pull through all 5 loops on hook.

Puff stitch (Puff):

- insert hook into stitch, YO and pull up a loop through stitch. -there are 2 loops on the hook.
*YO, insert hook into same stitch, YO, pull up a loop* -there are 4 loops on the hook.
- repeat from *-* one more time.- there are 6 loops on the hook.
YO and pull through all 6 loops on the hook. Chain 1 to close the puff stitch.
Important: the Puff stitch includes the Chain 1, at the end

The stitch count for each size is indicated between < > at the end of each round.

3rd loop HDC- each HDC stitch has actually 3 loops:

-there are two main loops=in a shape of V on the top THIRD loop
of each stitch-
referred to as the Front loop
and the Back loop respectively
- If you look behind this “V”, you’ll see another loop:
the Third loop= behind the Back loop.
By crocheting in the Third loop that is in the back, Front loop Back loop
while crocheting in the round, you push the Front
and the Back loop ( the top V) forward. This creates a fabric that looks on the right side, like knitting.

SIZES:-For guidance, see the next table with the head measurements when choosing the size.
SIZE HEAD MESUREMENTS
Toddler 18”-19”/ 46-48cm Head circumference
Child 20”-21”/ 51-53cm Head circumference
Teen, Small adult 22”-23”/ 56-58cm Head circumference
Medium/Large adult 23”-24”/ 60cm Head circumference

So let’s get started!

The hat is worked bottom up, in 2 steps – the pattern contains two sections:
1- the band- is worked flat
2- the body of hat –worked in round -is started along the edge of the band

-Directions are given for size Toddler and the changes for Child, Teen/Small and Medium/
Large are in parentheses, so: Toddler ( Child, Teen/Small, Medium/Large)
THE BAND
- Chain 8(9,10,11)– for toddler(child, S, L)size
Row 1: 1SC in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn- <7(8, 9,10) SC. >
Row 2: Ch1 and 1SC in the same stitch, 6(7, 8, 9)BLSC, turn.< 7(8, 9,10) SC>
Row 3- 48( 56, 60, 64): repeat Row2. Do not fasten off.

*In case if you are using different yarn and working with a different gauge, you can work 2 less (or
more) repeats to adjust the fit( you need to end the band with an even number of Rows)
* Measure the band -the band must fit well -it be a little tighter (but comfortable) around the head

Join: Bring the sides together and match the sts on the short end.

the side furthest away from you, make slip stitches through each stitch
to join the band into a cylinder.

Turn to work along the bottom edge:

THE BODY OF HAT
!All next rounds are worked in the round, RS facing you, EXCEPT R3 ( the 1st Puff Stitch round).
You must turn your work once you reach the end of R2 and join with a slip st.
You will work R3 with the inside of the hat facing you.
Then, at the end of R3 you will turn the work back again to continue the R4-R5-R6 on the RS.
The initial chain/s at the beginning of each round is not included in the stitch count.

Closing the Top of the Hat ( all sizes)

R1(RS): HDC all around. Join. <48 ( 56, 60, 64)>.
R1-decreasing R: ch2, HDC2tog all around. Join <24( 28, 30, 32)>
R2-decreasing R: ch2, HDC2tog all around. Join <12( 14, 15, 16)>
Cut the yarn leaving a 15” thread to close the hat.

* pull the yarn thread through the eye of the yarn needle *with your yarn needle, weave
the yarn in and out of the top loops of the last round of sts. *pull the end tight to cinch the
top closed. *secure the top closed by sewing back and forth across the opening a couple of
times. *The bunch is the base to support a large pompom. It will be covered by pompom.

*Attach the Faux Fur pompom to top of hat. Because the Faux Fur pompom is not washable,
I recommend sewing the pompom on a pin or use a safety pin, to be easily detached.
*Weave in all ends.

Congratulations! You have your MADISON hat!
