II. Background Information for Learners

Online search and research are more than just ‘googling’ –
typing a word in Google and then clicking the search button. It is
a skill that every Internet user should know to do smart
searching and this starts with improving search and research
skills to get better results.
Here are the things that you need to know to improve your
online search and research skills. This will guide you to obtain
the most relevant information that you need.
Tips in conducting online research.
Have a question in mind.
Focus on a question you want answered. If it is a series of questions,
start with one. Never search everything on one go
Narrow it down. Search engines use several filters to determine the
most appropriate result for you. It also use your previous search
history and your geographic location and send you the result which is
the most related to you. You should narrow it down to search the
appropriate result that you are looking for.
Advanced Search. The best way to filter information you get from
search engines is by using the advance search. This will allow you to
filter out information you do not need.

2
Look for credible sources. Some wikis though filled with updated
information are not credible source. This is due to the fact that
anyone can edit its content. When using Wikis , check out the link of
the cited text ( indicated by superscript number) to be navigated to
the footnote where the list of sources is located. Click the source of
the information and see if it is credible.
The more credible sources are:
 Scientific Journals
 Established news
 Magazine websites,
 Online encyclopedias
 Scholarly Databases
Give Credit. If you are going to use the information from a source
for educational purpose, give credit to the original author of the
page or information. To properly cite a reference, you may use the
format below:

Name of the person or organization(author of the

information). Title of the home page in italics(title is
shown in the bar but sometimes missing or unrelated). URL.
Date last seen or retrieved.

When searching online, narrow your topic. Identify the key

concepts or important ideas. Assuming that you would like to search
for the answer to this question: “What precautionary measures
should you observe when you are logged- in in a public computer?”
Do not type the whole question in the search box. Typing
the whole question often leads to a large number of and
inappropriate search results.

3
From the question, the keywords are: precautionary measures,
observed, logged-in, public computer. Keywords are terms that are
used in by most search engines to find related documents. Put the
word “AND” between each keyword to create a search string. You
may type the following in the search box: Precautionary measures
AND observe AND logged-in AND public computer. You will notice a
decrease in search results as shown below.

1. Identify synonyms of the key words. Not all

databases or articles use the same words to describe a
topic. Group similar words together by using the word “OR”
for a quick and relevant search. In the case of our example:
the synonyms of some of the keywords are: Precautionary
measures – preventive measures
Observe–pay
attention to
Logged-in –
signed-in
2. Use the plus (+) sign for a more specific search.
Just type + before a keyword to indicate that the word after the
sign is a required word that must be found in the search.
Example: +preventive measures
4
3. Use the minus (-) sign for a more specific search.
If you want to exclude a word from your search, place a minus
sign just before (without any space) the word you want to exclude.
Example: public computers -personal

4. A phrase search is executed by putting the search terms between

quotation marks, for example: “George Bush”. The search results are more
specific; however, you may accidentally exclude relevant results. For example,
when you search on “George Bush”, all results referring to “George W. Bush”
are excluded from the results list.

5. Wildcard are useful when you have a keyword that could be written in
different ways and you are not sure of the exact spelling, or you wish to leave it
open. For example, you may write accom# and words like accomplishment and
accommodate will both appear.

6. Boolean operators AND, OR and NOT between keywords are used

to search more precisely for what you want.

AND combines terms so that each search Strawberries AND

result contains all of your terms. Grapes
OR will look for any of your terms, so that Strawberries OR
each search result contains at least one Grapes
of your terms.
NOT search term you want to exclude from Strawberries NOT
your search. Grapes

7. Define the topic – In this stage, Google or Wikipedia can still aid you on
what you want to understand about the topic by simply searching the topic
you chose.

8. Identify resources of your research - Wikipedia contains references

used in writing at the bottom. The following sources of information that
can be helpful.
a. Google Scholar is a free academic search engine that
indexes academic information from various online web
resources
b. CiteSeerx (http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu) is a digital library
and an online academic journal that offer information
within the field of computer science.
c. GetCITED (http://www.getcited.org3 - It is a one-stop
platform that offers everything related to academic
publications such as chapters, conference papers, reports
and presentations.
5
d. Microsoft Academic Research - It indexes range of
scientific journals from computer science and engineering
to social science and biology
e. BIOLINE NTERNATIONAL
(http://www.bioline.org.br/) - is among the most trusted
and authentic search engines that has peer-reviewed
academic journals on public health, food and nutritional
security, food and medicine and biodiversity.

9. Create a list of references for citation - Cite sources to avoid

plagiarism. Plagiarism checkers like Grammarly, ensures
research/assignment will not be questioned as another person/s work.

Evaluating Websites
To help you evaluate the website’s credibility, here are the
questions that you need to answer:
1. What is the domain type of the website?

If it is a personal website, then you should further evaluate

the website.

2. Who wrote the article?

Check if the author’s credentials or affiliations are listed
so you can tell whether or not the author is qualified to
write the topic. Check also the publisher of the article if it
is a reliable publisher. Make sure that the author
provides e-mail or a contact address/phone number.
3. What is the purpose of the document and why was it
produced?
It is also important to check the document’s purpose and why
it was produced. The document should provide accurate
information and must be objective in presenting it. Some

6
websites produce documents for the purpose of motivating
users to buy products. If this is the case, information might
be biased. However, bias is not necessarily bad but you
need to investigate the author or connections.
4. When was the document published and updated?
The document should be regularly updated. As to the
freshness of the date, it depends on the information
needed. For some topics you
want current information. For others, you want
information near the time it became known. The links
should also be up-to-date. There should be no dead
links.

III. Activities

Direction: Arrange the following activities in conducting online research. Write

the numbers only in your paper. 1 being the first step and 5 being the last
step.

The student identifies the different keywords from the website he/she
opened using a quick and dirty method.

The student searched for “computers AND computer parts” which is

the topic given by the teacher.

The student saved all the data from the identified sources of the
assignment.

The student deletes the unnecessary information saved because they

were redundant already.

The student lists the possible sources like the sites and references
links. It does not matter yet if they are not valid.

Performance Task 3A

Search the following with the use of google search engine by going
through the instructions and answer the questions based on the results that you
performed.

1. Search by typing RAM AND ROM (include the word AND in your search).
What is the difference of RAM and ROM and explain how each works? (Answer
it in your own words)
2. I don’t know how to spell Connecticut (a place that can be found in North East
7
in United States) and the word quotation. Type Connec# and quot# to confirm
if it can give the correct spelling. Were the search engine able to give the
correct spelling even though the words were incomplete? How does the
number sign or wildcard help in looking for the complete spelling? (Answer it in
your own words)
3. Type worm – virus – computer. What is a computer worm and virus? How
can you differentiate the two? (Answer it in your own words)

Performance Task 3B
Evaluate the given two web pages by answering the questions on the
table. Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper.
