AC 1.6 – Evaluate methods of collecting statistics about crime.

Reliability on the statistics of crime is how trustworthiness of the statistics. The crime survey
of England and wales is a way of reporting crime and is a way to gain statistics on criminal
activity, victims of a crime may report a crime by doing the survey. As it is a survey, everyone
will have to answer the same questions making it reliable. However, if a victim chose not to
report a crime after it occurred, they probably won’t have a change of heart after being told
about a different method of reporting the crime and not everyone will have the same
responses, two victims of the same crime give give different responses.

Validity of the statistics is how accurate the statistics are. The crime survey uncovers many
crimes that haven’t been reported to the police making it a good way on gaining information
and giving more valid statistics. However, the crime statistics won’t include the crimes that
are not reported by the victims and the crimes that aren’t reported by the police. The
victims may not report the crime due to personal reasons and the police may not report that
crime due to it being minor or being told to not do so.

Ethics of the research refers to the morality and the right and wrongs. It relates to the
victims and offenders right to privacy and anonymity, this means that they are non-
identifiable by the home office statistics. This could give the victim a sense of relief as they
had just gone through something that could be traumatic or unnerving, so the last thing
man6 would want to do is sit down and recall it for someone. However, this gives the victim
a right to not fill in the crime survey making the reliability and validity on the crime statistics
go down.

Purpose of research is the reason behind the research. This helps to give a valid and reliable
picture of crime, the police statistics help measure police activity, indicate criminal trends
and give a good measure of reported and recorded crimes. The measure of police activity
tel, us what their priorities are and which crimes they are trying to tackle, the indicators to
crime trends could hint to something going on, that something could be the police need to
step up or that somethings going on.However, the statistics do not inform us about crimes
and don’t help us understand other issues to do with crime.

Some strengths and limitations on collecting statistics are: the counting rules, changes in the
law, which offences should be included and the other agencies. The counting rules claim that
that the statistics should reflect on the number of victims and not the number of criminal
acts. The changes in the law say that actions that used to be a crime cease to be a crime
when old laws are changed, this has caused many problems. Another problem comes from
which offences should the police collect statistics on, the number of notifiable offences
change over time, the police will then have to constantly be aware on which offences they
must report to the Home Office. Furthermore, the statistics collected from other agencies
apart from the police are not included in the Home Office statistics.
