Form
AFFIRMATIVE I/You/He/She/It/We/You/They started/ran.
NEGATIVE I/You/He/She/It/We/You/They didn’t start/didn’t run.
INTERROGATIVE Did I/you/he/she/it/we/you/they start/run?
SHORT Yes, I/you/he/she/it/we/you/they did.
ANSWERS No, I/you/he/she/it/we/you/they didn’t.
Use
We use the past simple for:
• an action or event that happened at a definite time (stated or implied) in the past.
The London Marathon took place yesterday. (When? Yesterday. The time is stated.)
Hundreds of runners took part in it. (When? Yesterday. The time is implied.)
• actions that happened immediately one after the other in the past. He got up and took a shower.
• past habits or states. In this case we use adverbs of frequency such as always, often, usually, etc. She often
played the piano when she was young.
• people who are no longer alive. Elvis Presley wrote a lot of songs.
Spelling rules
• Regular verbs form the past simple by adding -ed to the base form of the main verb. work – worked, walk – walked
• Verbs ending in -e take only -d. change – changed, dance – danced
• Verbs ending in a consonant + y drop the -y and take -ied. try – tried
• Verbs ending in a vowel + y take -ed. stay – stayed, display – displayed
• Verbs ending in one stressed vowel between two consonants, double the last consonant and take -ed.
plan – planned BUT: open – opened
• Verbs ending in -l double the l and take -ed. travel – travelled
• Irregular verbs do not form the past simple by adding -ed. (Study the list of irregular verbs at the back of the book.)
Pronunciation
The suffix -ed is pronounced:
• /Id/ when the verb ends in a /t/ or /d/ sound. started, wanted, succeeded, ended
• /t/ when the verb ends in a /k/, /s/, /tS/, /S/, /f/ or /p/ sound. laughed, cooked
• /d/ when the verb ends in any other sound. sobbed, stayed, allowed, arrived
Intonation
For wh- questions (wh- word + did + subject + base form of the main verb), we use falling intonation.
When did he arrive?
For Yes/No questions (Did + subject + base form of the main verb). we use rising intonation. Did he arrive?
BUT Who/What + main verb + object (to refer to the subject of the verb) – falling intonation. Who did you travel with?
Time words/phrases used with the past simple: yesterday, the day before yesterday, last week/month/year, two
hours/days/weeks/months/years ago, (how long) ago, when, then, in 2003, just now, etc.
