ABSTRACT
The present work investigates the effect of post weld heat treatment (PWHT) on the mechanical and
microstructural properties of dissimilar stainless steel (SS) and mild steel (MS) welded joints using
the Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) process. The dissimilar metal joints were subjected to PWHT
to assess its influence on improving the joint strength, integrity, microstructure, residual stresses,
and corrosion resistance.
The experimental investigation involved welding SS 304 and MS plates using the
GMAW process, followed by different post weld heat treatment conditions. The
mechanical properties of the welded joints, including tensile strength, hardness, and
impact toughness, were evaluated, and compared between the as-welded and PWHT
specimens. Additionally, microstructural analysis using scanning electron microscopy
(SEM) was conducted to examine the changes in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) and the
weld metal due to PWHT.
The results showed that post weld heat treatment had a significant effect on the
mechanical properties of the dissimilar SS 304 and MS welded joints. The PWHT
process resulted in decreased joint strength and integrity, with decreased tensile strength
and increased hardness compared to the as-welded joints. SEM analysis revealed
changes in the grain structure, reduction in the formation of brittle phases, and improved
homogeneity in the HAZ and weld metal region following the PWHT.
