Are GMOs bad?

By Chloe Hocquellet (7L)

What is a GMO?
According to Wikipedia “A genetically
modified organism (GMO) is any organism
whose genetic material has been altered
using genetic engineering techniques. The
exact definition of a genetically modified
organism and what constitutes genetic
engineering varies, with the most common
being an organism altered in a way that
"does not occur naturally by mating and/or
natural recombination".

GMO was first created by Herbert Boyer and Stanley Cohen in 1973. They made the first genetically
modified organism which was a bacterium resistant to the antibiotic kanamycin. In 1974, Rudolf
Jaenisch then created the first GMO animal which was a mouse. Only in 1983, the first genetically
modified plant was created.

Nowadays, we start using GMOs in medicine such as vaccine. However, beyond medical purposes,
there have been a major disagreement about using GMOs for food production.

Why is there concern about GMOs in food production?

A main concern about using GMOs in food production is how genetically modified plant could cause
harm to human. In the traditional food production, farmer use pesticides sprayed to natural plants,
therefore it could be washed off. Whereas with GMOs plant, the plant has been genetically modified
to resist pest, which some would argue surely if it could “kill” pest, it would not be good for human
consumption as it could create side effects.

Another concern is the possibilities of GMO crops are getting mixed with another natural crop,
creating an unwanted mutation. Although this issue could be solved by using terminator seed which
is a genetically modified seed that would not grow once a plant produces a crop. This means that
once the farmers harvesting the plants, they would need to buy new seeds for the next harvest. This
could be costly for the farmers.

Why do I think we should use GMOs?

Despite all the concerns above, I think we should continue exploring how we could use GMOs for the
future. Using GMOs in crops would reduce the needs for pesticides, which hopefully would help bees
to recover. This surely would benefits the environment as the majority of food we eat relies on bees.
As Albert Einstein quoted “If the bee disappeared off the face of the Earth, man would only have
four years left to live.”

Secondly, GMOs could be a good thing for example the scientist could create a way to end malaria,
by creating a modified mosquito with dominating genes that could not spread malarias to other
species.

There are more examples of how GMOs could be good. One example is in Bangladesh, the scientist
created a genetically modified egg plant that was immune to the pest, removing the needs of heavily
rely on pesticides. By using GMOs, the farmers were able to improve crops quantities as well as their
income as they were able to have more crops to sell.

Conclusion
I personally believe that we will need GMOs to continue our progress. There has been many
circumstances where GMOs have saved our economy. For example, a few years ago the Hawaiian
papaya industry went through an attack from the ring spot virus. To save the papayas, scientists
created a BTS crop. True there is good reason to disagree with me, like how the crops might mix and
create unwanted mutations, but like all things. We will come up with a solution for it.
